Carnitor is a diet supplement used to prevent and treat low blood levels of carnitine. Carnitine is a substance made in the body from meat and dairy products and helps the body use certain chemicals (long-chain fatty acids) for energy and to maintain good health.

Low blood levels of carnitine can occur in people who cannot properly use carnitine from their diets, individuals on dialysis due to serious kidney disease, and those being treated with certain drugs like valproic acid and zidovudine. Low carnitine levels can lead to liver, heart, and muscle problems.

Carnitor comes in two forms: levocarnitine (the medication) and D-carnitine. An over-the-counter product called vitamin Bt contains a mixture of levocarnitine and D-carnitine, but it should not be used to treat serious carnitine deficiency as it can interfere with the body's use of levocarnitine. Levocarnitine should only be used to treat serious carnitine deficiency if prescribed by a healthcare provider

Do’s

  • Take carnitine with or just after meals to avoid stomach upset.
  • Space out multiple doses throughout the day (at least 3-4 hours apart).
  • Use a medication-measuring device for the liquid form (not a household spoon).
  • Chew chewable tablets thoroughly before swallowing.
  • Take carnitine regularly as directed by your healthcare provider or the package instructions.
  • Seek medical attention if your condition worsens or you suspect a serious medical problem.

Don'ts

  • Don't increase your dose or take carnitine more often than recommended.
  • Don't take carnitine if you think you have a serious medical problem (seek medical help instead).

Common side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Muscle weakness
  • Body odor

Serious side effects (seek medical attention if experienced):

  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, and difficulty breathing

This is not an exhaustive list, and other side effects may occur. If you experience any unusual or severe side effects while taking Carnitor,  contact your healthcare provider for medical advice.

Let your healthcare provider know immediately if you have any allergies to levocarnitine or any inactive ingredients (especially peanut or soy) before even starting carnitine.

Talk to your healthcare provider before taking carnitine if you have a history of:

  • Kidney disease
  • Seizures

Be aware that liquid carnitine may contain sugar or alcohol. This can be risky for certain people:

Liquid carnitine may affect blood sugar levels due to possible sugar content. Consult your healthcare provider.

People with Alcohol Dependence or Liver Disease. Avoid liquid carnitine due to its potential alcohol content.

Carnitine should only be taken when absolutely necessary and only after a discussion with your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits. There is no information on if carnitine passes into breast milk. Consult your healthcare provider before breastfeeding.
