Keppra Oral Solution (Levetiracetam)

Do’s

• Before starting Keppra Oral Solution and each time you get a refill, read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist. If available, also review the Patient Information Leaflet for additional information.
• Take Keppra Oral Solution by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider. Usually, it is taken twice daily, with or without food. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding the timing of doses.
• Carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device or spoon. 
• The dosage of Keppra Oral Solution is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. For children, the dosage may also be based on their weight. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dosage for you.
• To reduce the risk of side effects such as dizziness and drowsiness, your healthcare provider may direct you to start Keppra at a low dose and gradually increase it. Follow their instructions carefully during this process.
• Use Keppra Oral Solution regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day.
• Inform your healthcare provider if your seizures persist, alter, or deteriorate.

Don’ts

• Do not use a household spoon, as it may not provide the correct dose.
• Do not increase your dose or use Keppra Oral Solution more often or for a longer duration than prescribed. Your condition will not improve faster by doing so, and it may increase the risk of side effects.
• Do not stop taking Keppra Oral Solution without consulting your healthcare provider. Suddenly stopping the medication can worsen your seizures. If your healthcare provider decides to discontinue Keppra, they will gradually decrease your dose.

Common Side Effects: 

• Mood changes such as depression, nervousness, aggression, anger, anxiety, confusion, hallucination, irritability
• Allergic reactions to the excipients in Keppra Oral Solution, such as methylhydroxybenzoate and parahydroxybenzoate, which may cause allergic reactions, and maltitol, which may have a mild laxative effect 

Other Potential Side Effects:

• Sleepiness, tiredness, and dizziness
• Nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nose and throat)
• Headache, stomach upset, and diarrhea (when ingested in doses greater than 10 g) due to the presence of glycerol in the oral solution

Keppra Oral Solution contains excipients such as methyl parahydroxybenzoate, propyl parahydroxybenzoate, and maltitol liquid, which may cause allergic reactions. If you have known allergies to these substances, you should avoid using Keppra Oral Solution.
