Fosrenol, also known as Lanthanum Carbonate, is a medication primarily indicated for the reduction of serum phosphate levels in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This condition is also known as end-stage kidney disease. High levels of phosphate in the body can make it difficult for your body to absorb calcium, which can lead to serious medical problems.
Fosrenol works by preventing the body from absorbing phosphate, allowing it to be removed from the body. This is achieved by binding to the phosphates in your food before they can be absorbed, which lowers phosphorus levels to help protect your kidneys and bones.
Do’s
- The dosage of Fosrenol is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and lab tests. Your healthcare provider will adjust your dose based on the phosphorus level in your blood. Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it.
- Take Fosrenol by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually with or right after meals.
- Chew the tablets completely before swallowing to reduce the risk of stomach/abdominal side effects. You may crush the tablets to make it easier to chew them.
- Fosrenol may interact with certain medications or supplements. Keep a list of all the products you use (including prescription/nonprescription drugs and herbal products) and share it with your healthcare provider.
- Lanthanum may stop some medications from working well if you take them at the same time. Ask your healthcare provider if you need to separate the time that you take your other medications from the time that you take Forsenol.
- Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before starting Fosrenol and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your healthcare provider for further clarification.
Don’ts
- Do not swallow the tablets whole.
Common Side Effects:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain
These are not all the possible side effects of Fosrenol. If you experience any side effects that bother you or do not go away, inform your healthcare provider. Additionally, follow the prescribed dosage and administration instructions for Fosrenol to minimize the risk of side effects.
Serious cases of gastrointestinal obstruction, ileus, subileus, gastrointestinal perforation, and fecal impaction have been reported in patients taking lanthanum, some requiring surgery or hospitalization. Consider discontinuing Fosrenol in patients without another explanation for severe gastrointestinal symptoms.
Advise patients who are taking an oral medication where a reduction in the bioavailability of that medication would have a clinically significant effect on its safety or efficacy to separate the dosing of Fosrenol from the dosing of the affected drug by several hours.
Before using Fosrenol, inform your healthcare provider about any allergies, stomach/intestinal problems, diabetes, and other medications you are taking. Additionally, inform X-ray personnel that you are taking Fosrenol before undergoing an abdominal X-ray.
