What Is Positive Stress?

Filed under: stress — doctorsolve @ 1:15 pm

Chances are that if you were to ask people “what is positive stress?” you would get only a bewildered look as a response. After all, we have always been taught that stress is bad for our health and that we should avoid it whenever possible.

Even so, there is indeed such a thing as positive stress and it can have quite a beneficial impact on our lives.

The Definition of Positive Stress

We all know what stress feels like. It is a certain sensation of nervousness and tension, sometimes stomach butterflies. It is a reaction from our bodies as the result of certain physical, mental or psychological demands which are placed on it.

That is, more or less, the definition of the first person that identified stress, Hans Seley. However, he also categorized it in good stress and harmful stress.

The positive stress, also called eustress, is a reaction we have whenever we are faced with a demand which we can handle. It is a spark that can push your body to its limits in order to achieve a certain goal.

Whenever you feel positive stress, you are encouraged to act. Whether this means growing, fighting, changing or adapting is up to you, but you will not remain complacent. In other words, positive stress makes us do things we would not normally do. It gives us that extra impulse to take risks such as asking your boss for a promotion or inviting that girl you like on a date.

It can be argued that life would not only be much more boring, but also less filled with accomplishments if we did not experience positive stress.

From a medical standpoint, a lack of stress can actually be potentially damaging because it causes boredom and lack of motivation. This can lead to unfulfilled desires and wasted potential. In turn, these issues can put people at risk of depression and problems with low self esteem. That is why positive stress is good for us. It stimulates our bodies and helps us take that extra step further.

All About Repetitive Stress Injury

A repetitive stress injury (RSI) is an injury that occurs when too much stress is placed on a part of the body. This result is inflammation, muscle strain, and/or tissue damage.

What is a Repetitive Stress Injury?

Repetitive stress injuries are caused by repeated stress to parts of the body. The injured area may be tender, swollen, red and warm or hot to the touch. Moving the area may be painful.

Waking up during the night may be common, particularly if the injury is in your shoulder.

The pain is usually localized to the area around the affected tissues. Some common stresses that can lead to injured tissues are:

  • Shoulder tendonitis
caused by using your arm to make repeated overhead motions.
  • Tennis elbow
caused by repeatedly bending the wrist backwards with force (e.g. playing tennis).
  • Golfer’s elbow
caused by repeatedly bending the wrist forward with force (e.g. swinging a golf club).
  • DeQuervain’s tendosynovitis
caused by repeated use of the wrist or thumb on the thumb sign of the hand (e.g. using a keyboard).
  • Housemaid’s knee
caused by kneeling or leaning forward for a long period of time (e.g. scrubbing the floor).
  • Tendinitis and bursitis
some forms may also be caused by diseases such as arthritis, gout, Reiter’s syndrome, thyroid disease, and diabetes.

Repetitive Stress Injury Treatment

The treatment of repetitive stress injury will vary, depending upon your doctor’s diagnoses through a physical examination of the area.

Medicines to treat the inflammation may be prescribed, and cold packs may be used to reduce inflammation. Other treatment options are resting the associated tissues and then re-introducing them to the activity slowly as to protect them from further irritation.

How to Prevent Repetitive Stress Injury

Below are some tips to help prevent repetitive stress injury:

  • Take frequent breaks from the task that you are performing repeatedly.
  • Exercise regularly to lessen the irritation of the joints.
  • Your doctor may prescribe some type of support for the area that is irritated, such as a wrist brace.
  • If the injury is sustained by using a keyboard or mouse constantly, you may want to purchase an ergonomic keyboard with curves and a rest pad for your wrist to help eliminate stress on the wrist and hand
  • Whenever possible, rest the injured area. Pace yourself and take breaks often.
  • Don’t lean over the keyboard – bad posture is one of the primary risk factors in repetitive stress injuries. Adjust your seat so that you sit up straight instead of leaning forward. Make sure your monitor is directly in from of you and the top of the screen is at eye level.

Stress Relievers

Stress is a silent killer. It eats away at you and makes you feel like your life is full of unfix-able, pressing problems. 99 percent of all illnesses are related to stress. Stress is also related to high blood pressure, hair loss, depression, memory loss, heart attack, stroke, weight gain, heart disease, cancer and many other conditions. When you become stressed, your body reacts in different ways. Your nervous system releases hormones which increase your heart rate, raise your blood pressure, and increase the sugar levels in your bloodstream. Stress can cause you to eat more or less food than you usually eat; this may result in heartburn, acid reflux, nausea, stomachache, or diarrhea. In men high levels of stress can impair sperm production and cause impotence. In women stress can decrease sexual desire or cause irregular menstrual cycles.
To reduce stress levels, try these tips!

Stop procrastinating! – Most often procrastination is the epicenter of the cause for stress. How many times have you realized the day of a big project, meeting, test (or other activity requiring preparation) that you are completely unprepared and spend the minutes leading up to the activity cramming and freaking out. Breaking procrastination is extremely difficult but can be done. Set an alarm each night and put aside 20 minutes (or any amount of time) to work on a task instead of having to complete it in one go. Do not look at your task as one huge assignment, rather break it into small portions to be easier dealt with.

Music therapy – Listening to soft music can be therapeutic and help relieve stress. Listening to “black music” can increase your stress levels rather than help them. Black music includes metal, rap, hard rock, etc. Blues, jazz, pop, country, and classical music are more positive choices of music to relax to.

Write a to-do list – Writing a to-do list will help you to see that you do not actually have as much on your plate as it seems. It may also help that you can plan and organize when you have free time and how you can arrange every task into your schedule. Seeing things in writing generally helps organize the mumbo-jumbo in your head into understandable terms.

How Stress can Make you Sick

Stress is sometimes considered to be the root to all ailments. When we are stressing out our bodies can’t put as much energy into keeping us healthy. We can suffer from things like cold sores, flu’s, and indigestion when we have too much on the brain. Here are some ways stress can make you sick, and how to become healthy by reducing your stress levels.
Headaches and Migraines - When you are stressing out, your brain will go through hormonal, neurochemical events that stimulate your nerves and cause your blood vessels to swell. This creates pressure in the brain and causes headaches. to reduce the number of headaches and migraines you experience, try relaxation and stress-management techniques. Doing this has been proven to reduce the number of headaches you have up to 50%.

Colds - Stress weakens the immune system, therefore making it easier for you to get sick. A recent study at Carnegie Mellon University surveyed volunteers about what was happening in their lives, and then exposed them to a cold virus. Those coping with high stress levels were twice as likely to become sick than those with lower levels of stress, or no feelings of stress at all.

Stomach Aches - Anxiety and stress can cause your body to produce more digestive acid, which leads to heartburn. Stress can also slow the digestion of food in the stomach, causing gas and bloating, and can affect the muscles in your colon resulting in cramps and diarrhea. The next time you start to become stressed or anxious about a big presentation at work or while you are rushing to meet deadlines, take a 5 minute break to relax and collect yourself.

Breakouts – Ever notice that your skin breaks out before an important event that you’ve been worked up about – such as your sisters wedding or your Christmas dinner party? Stress effects the levels of the hormone androgen in the body which triggers your glands to speed up oil production in the skin. this causes clogging which leads to break outs. When you’re stressed out your nerve endings can also act up leading to skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, and even cold sores. To prevent break outs, drink lots of water and spend at least an hour a day doing something stress free and relaxing.

Insomnia - Stress is the biggest cause of sleep deprivation. When you are lying in bed and your mind is still thinking about all of the problems you have to deal with in the morning, its hard to get a good night’s sleep. A lack of sleep leads to other problems including a weakened immune system and other stress problems and it becomes a vicious circle. If you are having difficulty winding down before bed, try taking a soothing bubble bath to calm down.

Back Pain – Research shows that chronic back pain is usually caused by stress. Stress triggers the nervous system to reduce blood flow to the muscles making them have more spasms. When people hunch over and tense their shoulder and neck due to stress and anxiety it makes things worse and can lead to back problems.

Infertility – Stress will impact every part of the body – especially the reproductive system. A woman is less likely to become pregnant if she is having a hard time dealing with stress. Learning how to cope with stress can reduce your distress and boost your chances of conceiving.

8 Ways to Prevent and Ease Heartburn

Despite it’s deceiving name, heartburn has nothing to do with your heart. In fact the stinging sensation occurs in the esophagus when acid leaves the stomach and comes into contact with the esophagus lining. Those who suffer from heartburn, or acid reflux, know how much of a pain it is and are probably constantly searching for a solution to heartburn problems. Here are 8 quick tips to help you prevent your acid reflux episodes

1. Eat to Prevent Heartburn – The first thing that will help you ease heartburn is making sure you have a healthy diet with less acid and more fiber. Fatty foods like to sit in the stomach creating acid, whereas vegetables, fruits, and grains are easily digested with less acid production. Acidic foods include coffee, chili peppers, orange juice, tomato juice, and tomato sauce can cause heartburn. Some drugs like tetracylin, aspirin, ibuprophen, and iron supplements may cause heartburn. Other foods like garlic, onions, and chocolate may seem to promote heartburn by weakening the muscles at the bottom of the esophagus. By eating more fruits, vegetables, and grains you can ease your acid reflux.

2. Chew more gum - Saliva is a natural heartburn remedy. It is a base that neutralizes acid and washes it back into the stomach. Pop a piece of gum after a heavy meal to prevent heartburn.

3. Eat slowly – Eating quickly encourages you to eat more, therefore pushing acid up into the esophagus. Keep your meal proportions moderate and avoid eating on the run – this triggers stress which in turn triggers acid production and sensitivity to the pain of acid reflux.

4. Drink Herbal tea – Herbs have been considered natural heartburn remedies for thousands of years. After eating, brew chamomile, angelica, anise, caraway, seeds, or coriander. Peppermint leaves are also soothing herbs that can be brewed into a tea.

5. Stress less – stress increases the pain of acid reflux. If you are usually prone to stress, try meditative activities like yoga, or take an hour or so each day to do something you really enjoy such as playing and instrument, reading, or pampering yourself with a bubble bath.

6. Stay Standing – When you are suffering from pain your instinct might be to lie down. Try not to lie down when you have heartburn because it will actually cause the stomach acid to overflow therefore increasing the pain. Stick it out standing up.

7. Don’t eat and sleep – Do not eat within 2 hours before going to bed. Lying down with a full stomach can cause heartburn and indigestion. This can increase pain and prevent you from having a good sleep. It is also suggested that eating before bed can contribute to weight gain.

8. Skip the tuxedo cake – Usually, chocolate has health benefits, but when it comes to heartburn, the fat and caffeine in chocolate can stimulate overproduction of stomach acid. Other foods that stimulate acid in the stomach are milk, beer, wine, and tomatoes. If you can, avoid chocolate.

Before you go raiding the candy jar, keep in mind that these health benefits pertain to DARK CHOCOLATE only. That is anything with a cocoa content over 65%. Milk chocolate is probably what you are used to, but if you are interested in eating healthy it might be a good idea to give dark chocolate a try.

1. Good for the Heart - Due to the presence of antioxidants in dark chocolate, studies have found that in individuals with high blood pressure, a stick of dark chocolate a day can lower blood pressure levels. In addition, dark chocolate has been known to lower cholesterol levels by up to 10%.

2. Improves Mood – Dark chocolate stimulates endorphin production which in turn provides the brain with feelings of pleasure. A substance called theobromine which provides you with caffeine-like stimulation is also present in dark chocolate. Dark chocolate contains serotonin which is known to act as an anti-depressant.

5 Body Signs Explained!

We’ve all had little clues that our bodies sent out to us when something isn’t right. Here is a list of five body clues explained that are common in many young women!

1. More hair in the drain

The reason may be because of your birth control pills. The estrogen in the birth control usually triggers hair growth when it is first taken, but several months later, the hair then goes into a loss phase. Don’t worry – It shouldn’t last for more than a couple months.

2. Tylenol pain relievers made your headache worse!

This is usually called a “rebound” headache. It is a side effect of over the counter headache pills. When you take a pain reliever, your brain becomes sensitized to it, so when you stop taking it, you may suffer from symptoms of withdrawal – like another headache.

3. You become light headed when you stand up

This could be caused by dehydration. Dehydration can make your blood pressure drop, and that is what causes the dizzy feeling. Drink water throughout the day and try to eat foods with a high water content – like soup and fruit. If the feeling continues every time you get up, see your doctor.

4. You have dark under-eye circles!

If you do not get enough sleep, your circulation slows down and blood vessels under your eyes become swollen and give off a blue tint through the skin. Eight hours of sleep every night will ensure your blood flow is healthy, and prevent you from developing dark circles under your eyes. If you do have dark circles, avoid touching them – touching them may trigger bruises that make them worse! It the circles persist, consult your doctor.

5. You woke up and can’t fall asleep again

If you’ve been drinking, then booze is the problem. Two servings of alcohol can interfere with your ability to deep sleep, causing you to wake up after you fall asleep. Limit yourself to one drink at least four hours before bed – and you should be able to sleep all night!

If that isn’t the problem, you may have insomnia caused by stress. Try relaxing a few hours before bed by having a bubble bath, reading a book, or doing another calming activity.

5 Easy Ways to Lower Blood Pressure

1. Exercise

Regular exercise has been known to lower blood pressure in some people. It’s good for many other things including weight management, lowering cholesterol, and reducing stress. Make an exercise schedule for yourself and spend at least 30 minutes a day 5 times a week by running, walking, cycling, or doing Pilates. There are also special yoga classes which help lower blood pressure.

2. Monitor your Weight

Those who are overweight may have more problems with blood pressure than those who are of normal weight. If you are overweight, try to lose a few pounds in order to improve blood flow by exercising and eating better.

3. Limit your salt intake

Reducing your intake of salt and other forms of sodium may help control your blood pressure. On the other hand, eating foods with more potassium, magnesium, and calcium can also lower your blood pressure.

4. Limit your alcohol intake

High amounts of alcoholic beverages will increase your blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, it’s a good idea to consider not drinking alcohol. If you choose to drink, monitor your intake.

If you are drinking, limit yourself to no more than 2 drinks a day, and 9 drinks a week.

5. Stress Less

High stress levels will increase your blood pressure. It’s important to relax and give yourself time to wind down before bed in order to reduce your stress, thus reducing your blood pressure. Try relaxation and meditation techniques like deep breathing or taking a hot bubble bath.
