Viokase 8 is a medication designed to replace certain enzymes if you body does not have enough of its own. Viokase may also be used after the removal of the pancreatic ducts.

How should I take Viokace/Pancrealipase ?

Always take this medication following any and all directions given to you by your doctor. Take Viokase 8 with a meal or snack and a full glass of either water or juice. Do not crush, chew, break, or open an extended-release tablet or capsule, swallow it whole.

When should Viokace /Pancrealipase not be taken?

Avoid the use of Viokase 8 if you are allergic to pork proteins.

What precautions should I follow when taking Viokace /Pancrealipase ?

Let your doctor know if you have kidney disease, gout, a history of blockage in your intestines, a sudden onset of pancreatitis, or worsening of chronic pancreatic disease. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or are breast-feeding as Viokase 8 may harm an unborn child and is not known whether or not it will harm a nursing child.

When should Viokace /Pancrealipase not be taken?

Serious side effects may include: allergic reaction; or severe or unusual stomach pain.

Less severe side effects may include: nausea or vomiting; mild stomach pain or upset stomach; diarrhea or constipation; bloating or gas; greasy stools; rectal irritation; headache, dizziness; cough; or weight loss.
