What is Vasotec /Enalapril used for?

Vasotec is an ACE inhibitor. ACE stands for angiotension converting enzyme. Vasotec is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), congestive heart failure, kidney problems caused by diabetes, and to improve survival after a heart attack.

How should I take Vasotec/Enalapril ?

Vasotec should be taken exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take Vasotec in larger amounts, or for longer than recommended by your doctor. Take each dose of Vasotec with a full glass of water, with or without food. Your doctor my occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from this medication. Vomiting, heavy sweating, or diarrhea can cause you to become dehydrated while using Vasotec. This may lead to very low blood pressure, electrolyte disorders, or kidney failure while taking Vasotec. Drink plenty of water each day while taking Vasotec. In order to make sure that this medication is working for you, have your blood pressure and kidney and liver function tested on a regular basis. Do not miss any scheduled appointments. If you require surgery, tell your surgeon that you are taking Vasotec before surgery. If you are being treated with Vasotec for high blood pressure, keep using this medication even if you feel fine. Often, high blood pressure has no symptoms. If you miss a dose of Vasotec, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra doses to make up for missed doses.

When should Vasotec /Enalapril not be taken?

Do not use Vasotec if you are allergic to Vasotec or any other ACE inhibitor including benazepril (Loensin), captopril (Capoten), fosinopril (Monopril), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril ), moexipril ( Univasc), perindopril (Aceon), quinapril (Accupril), ramipril (Altace) or trandolapril (Mavik)

What precautions should I follow when taking Vasotec /Enalapril ?

You may need a dose adjustment or special tests in order to safely take Vasotec if you have any of these conditions: kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, diabetes, or a connective tissue disease such as Marfan syndrome, Sjorgren's syndrome, lupus, scleroderma, or rheumatoid arthritis. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are pregnancy or planning to become pregnant. Vasotec could cause birth defects in a fetus. Use an effective birth control and stop using this medication and tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant while taking Vasotec. This medication can pass through into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Certain medications can react with Vasotec. Tell your doctor about any prescription or non prescription drugs that you use.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Vasotec /Enalapril ?

Vasotec may cause side effects that can impair your thinking ability or reactions. Take caution when driving or doing anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Avoid drinking alcohol while using Vasotec. It can lower your blood pressure and can increase the side effects of Vasotec. Do not use salt or potassium supplements while on Vasotec.

When should Vasotec /Enalapril not be taken?

Seek emergency help if you have any of these signs of allergic reaction: hives severe stomach pain, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor if you have any of these serious side effects: feeling light-heade

Less serious Vasotec side effects include: cough, loss of taste sensation, loss of appetite, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, sleep problems, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mild itch or red skin rash.
