What is Valcyte /Valganciclovir used for?

Valcyte is an antiviral drug which prevents virus cells from multiplying in the body.  Valcye is used to treat infections in the eyes of patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).  Valcyte may also be used to prevent cytomegalovirus in patients who received organ transplants. 

How should Valcyte /Valganciclovir be stored?

Valcyte should be stored in a dry place at room temperature away from moisture and heat.  Keep medication away from children and pets

How should I take Valcyte/Valganciclovir ?

Take Valcyte exactly as directed by your doctor.  Take each dose with a full glass of water and while eating a meal.  Take this medication for as many days as it has been prescribed for you even if you feel better.  Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely treated.  Take Valcyte at the same time each day.  Do not miss any doses.  If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember.  If it is time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.  Do not crush or break Valcyte tablets.  The medicine in the tablet can be dangerous if it gets in your eyes, mouth, or on your skin.  If contact occurs, wash the area with soap and water.  You should have your eyes checked every 4 to 6 weeks while taking Valcyte.

When should Valcyte /Valganciclovir not be taken?

Never take Valcyte if you are taking Cytovene. 

What precautions should I follow when taking Valcyte /Valganciclovir ?

Before using Valcyte, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, or a blood cell disorder.  Tell your doctor if you are on hemodialysis or if you have recently had a radiation treatment.  DO not use this medication without telling your doctor that you are pregnant.  If you become pregnant during treatment, inform your doctor immediately.  Do not breast feed while taking Valcyte.  If you have AIDS, follow your doctors directions with respect to high risk activities including sex and needle sharing.  Talk to your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs: Retrovir, Videx, CellCept, drugs that weaken your immune system, or Benemid. If you are using any of these drugs, you may not be able to use Valcyte. 

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Valcyte /Valganciclovir ?

Valcyte can lower the blood cells in your body.  This can make it easier for you to bleed from an injury or become sick.  To make sure your blood cell count does not get too low, have your blood tested on a regular basis.  If a man fathers a baby while using Valcyte, the baby may have birth defects.  Use an effective form of birth control to prevent pregnancy during the treatment of Valcyte.  Continue using condoms for at least 90 days after you stop using Valcyte.  Valcyte may cause side effects that can impair your thinking or reactions.  Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.

When should Valcyte /Valganciclovir not be taken?

Stop taking Valcyte and seek medical attention if you experience any of the following serious side effects:  An allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or mouth), easy bruising, unusual bleeding, numbness or tingling in any part of the body, signs of infection (fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms), or seizure

Less serious side effects include: Mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, fatigue, drowsiness, weakness, lack of coordination, confusion, tremor, insomnia.
