What is Trileptal /Oxcarbazepine used for?

Trileptal is an anticonvulsant or antielileptic drug.  It works by decreasing nerve impulses that cause seizures.  Trileptal is used to treat seizures in adults and children (over the age of 2) who have epilepsy. 

How should Trileptal /Oxcarbazepine be stored?

Store Trileptal at room temperature away from heat and moisture.

How should I take Trileptal/Oxcarbazepine ?

Do not take this medication in larger amounts, or take it longer than prescribed for you by your doctor. Take this medication with a full glass of water (with Trileptal pills).  Shake the medicine in the bottle before you measure a dose (with liquid Trileptal).  Use the oral syringe provided to be sure you get the correct dose.  Mix the medicine with a small glass of water or drink the liquid directly.  Do not stop taking this medication even if you feel better.  Take Trileptal regularly to prevent seizures from recurring.  Be sure to have your prescription refilled before your medicine runs out. 

When should Trileptal /Oxcarbazepine not be taken?

Do not use Trileptal if you are allergic to oxcarbazepine or to a medicine called carbamazepine.  (Carbatrol, Tegretol).  This medicine should not be used during pregnancy.  Trileptal can cause harm to an unbord baby.  Tell your doctor if you are pregnant during treatment.  The drugs in this medicine can pass into breast milk and harm a nursing baby.  Do not use use Trileptal without telling your doctor you are nursing a baby. Do not take Trileptal if you are consuming alcohol.  Alcohol may increase drowsiness and the risk of seizures.

What precautions should I follow when taking Trileptal /Oxcarbazepine ?

Always inform your doctor about any other prescription or non-prescription drugs that you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.  Before using this medicine, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease. Before using Trileptal, inform your doctor if you are taking other seizure medications.  Do not use this medicine if you  are pregnant and have not informed your doctor. Call your doctor immediately if you have new symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, depression, anxiety, if you feel agitated, hostile, restless, hyperactive, or have thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself.  Trileptal can impair your thinking or reaction time.  Be cautious when driving or doing anything that requires you to e alert. 

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Trileptal /Oxcarbazepine ?

Trileptal can reduce the sodium in your body to low levels.  This can cause a life-threatening electrolyte imbalance. Contact your doctor right away if you have nausea with vomiting, weakness, headache, confusion, mood changes, and/or increased or more severe seizures. This medication is not to be given to children under the age of 2.  If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember.  If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.  Do not take more than one dose at once.   If you think you have overdosed, contact a healthcare professional immediately.  Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise or in hot weather when using Trileptal.  Follow your doctors directions about how much liquid you are permitted to drink.  In some cases, drinking too much liquid can be unsafe. 

When should Trileptal /Oxcarbazepine not be taken?

Get immediate help if you experience these signs of allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. 

Serious side effects include: sore throat, headache, skin rash, jaundice, fever, swollen glands, flu-like symptoms, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness, changes in urination patterns, increased seizures.

Less serious side effects include: mild nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, problems with speech, problems with balance or coordination, blurred  vision, trouble concentrating, tremors or shaking, dizziness, drowsiness, skin peeling, or skin rash.
