What is Retrovir /Zidovudine used for?

Retrovir is used to treat an HIV infection when used in combination with other medicines. It is an antiviral medication that works by preventing the reproduction of the HIV virus. It can also be used to help prevent the HIV virus from passing to the fetus during pregnancy in women with HIV

How should I take Retrovir/Zidovudine ?

Use Retrovir as directed by your doctor. Retrovir is to be given in the form of an injection in a doctor’s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Retrovir at home, a health care provider will teach you how to use it. Make sure you completely understand how to use Retrovir and follow the instructions you are taught when you administer a dose. Do not use Retrovir if it contains particles, if it is cloudy or discolored, or it the vial is cracked or damaged in any way. Keep all supplies associated with this medication out of the reach of children and pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of these materials after use. Follow a regular dosing schedule when using this medicine unless you are instructed otherwise. Keep using Retrovir even if you feel well. Take all doses of Retrovir on time. Do not miss any doses. If you miss a dose, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing regimen

When should Retrovir /Zidovudine not be taken?

Do not take Retrovir if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medication. Do not use this medication if you have an enlarged liver, high lactic acid levels in your blood, or abnormal liver function test results. If you are using doxorubicin, ribavirin, stavudine, or any other medicine that contains zidovudine, do not take Retrovir.

What precautions should I follow when taking Retrovir /Zidovudine ?

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you are planning on becoming pregnant while using Retrovir. Do not breast feed while using Retrovir. The medicine can transfer through breast milk and harm a nursing baby. Women with HIV should not be breastfeeding due to the risk of passing the virus on to their baby. Some medications interact with Retrovir. This can cause unwanted or harmful effects. Tell your doctor about any prescription or non prescription medications that you use before taking this medicine. If you have bone marrow problems, low white blood cell levels, kidney problems, hepatitis C, or liver problems, tell your doctor before using Retrovir.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Retrovir /Zidovudine ?

Retrovir can lower your body’s ability to fight infection. Try to avoid contact with people who have colds or infections. Do not take more than the recommended dose for use or for longer than prescribed without your doctor’s orders. Retrovir is not a cure for HIV. Patients may still be illnesses and infections associated with HIV. This medication does not stop the spread of HIV on to others through blood or sexual contact. Use barrier methods of birth control and do not share injection supplies, razors, or toothbrushes with anyone if you have HIV. The Risk of developing severe side effects may be greater in women, obese patients, and patients who have taken reverse transcriptase inhibitors. A number of lab tests may need to be performed while you are using Retrovir in order to make sure the medicine is benefitting you. Do not miss any scheduled appointments.

Seek emergency medical attention if you are experiencing signs of an allergic reaction including: rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing and tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. Call your doctor right away if you are
