How should I take Pradaxa/dabigatran etesilate ?

Read the directions on the prescription label. Do not take larger or more frequent doses than prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication as directed on the label or by your pharmacist, doctor, or other healthcare provider. Take with a full glass of water with or without food. Swallow whole, do not crush, chew or break the tablet because too much medicine will be released at one time.

When should Pradaxa /dabigatran etesilate not be taken?

Do not take Pradaxa if you are currently taking quinidine, have kidney problems or sign of existing liver problems. Also, do not take Pradaxa if you are allergic to dabigatran etexilate or any of the ingredients of Pradaxa, if you have active bleeding, tissue damage that can potentially lead to bleeding, or a blood clotting process problem that may be inborn or of unknown cause because of other medications.

What precautions should I follow when taking Pradaxa /dabigatran etesilate ?

Before taking Pradaxa, inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or breastfeeding; if you are taking prescription or over the counter medication, herbal preparation, or dietary supplements; if you have any allergies to drugs; if you have kidney problems or liver problems; if you are at risk of bleeding or are currently bleeding; if you have an increased tendency to bleed; if you have a disease in an organ of the body that increases the risk of serious bleeding; if you have an infection of the heart (bacterial endocarditis); if you weigh less than 50 kg or more than 110 kg.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Pradaxa /dabigatran etesilate ?

Patients taking Pradaxa should monitor their signs of bleeding or anemia, especially if he/she weighs less than 50 kg or more than 110 kg. Do not give Pradaxa to any one under the age of 18.

When should Pradaxa /dabigatran etesilate not be taken?

Severe: Bleeding into a joint, decreased amount of platelets in the blood, nose bleeds, bloody stools, bleeding into the stomach or bowel, bleeding from the piles, bleeding under the skin, bleeding into the rectum, or blood in the urine that stains the urine pink or red.

Common: Bleeding or bruising from an injury, haematoma formation, reduced red blood cell count, wound secretion, bruising or bleeding after an operation, and blood in the urine.
