What is Patanol /Olopatadine used for?

There is a natural chemical produced by the body called histamine, which is responsible for symptoms of itching or watery eyes. Patanol is an antihistamine that is used in the treatment of eye symptoms, such as inflammation, itching, watering, and burning.

How should I take Patanol/Olopatadine ?

Use Patanol as it was prescribed to you. Wash your hands thoroughly before use. Apply by first tilting your head back slightly. Pull down the lower eyelid in order to create a small pocket. Look up and away from the dropper and squeeze a drop out. Close your eye and maintain gentle pressure on the corner of your eye (the corner closest to your nose) for 1 minute. If another drop is need, wait at least 5 minutes between drops.

When should Patanol /Olopatadine not be taken?

Talk to your doctor before using Patanol, especially if you have or have had any eye infections. Do not use Patanol while you are wearing contact lenses. Wait at least 10 minutes before putting in your contact lenses. Do not use Patanol if the liquid has changed colors or there are particles in it. Do not use Patanol if the dropper has touched any surface. Discontinue use of Patanol if you experience severe redness, swelling, burning, stinging, drainage, crusting, or other irritation.

What precautions should I follow when taking Patanol /Olopatadine ?

Do not use with contact lenses, wait 10 minutes after application before putting your contact lenses back in. If your eyes become red or irritated do not wear contacts. If the liquid changes colors or the are particles in it, do not use your current medicine, go and get a new prescription.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Patanol /Olopatadine ?

Do not use with contact lenses in and wait at least 10 minutes before placing your contacts in. Avoid use if the liquid changes color or particles are in the liquid. Do not touch the dropper on any surface, as this may cause the dropper to become contaminated and increase the risk of an infection.

When should Patanol /Olopatadine not be taken?

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Discontinue use of Patanol and call your doctor immediately if you have severe redness, swelling, burning, stinging, drainage, crusting, or other irritation when using the eye drops. Less serious side effects include: mild burning, stinging, irritation, itching, redness, or dryness of the eyes; blurred vision; feeling that something is in your eye; puffy eyelids; stuffy or runny nose, cough, sore throat; weakness; back pain; headache; or unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth.
