How should I take Ortho Tri Cyclen 28 day/Ethinyl Estradiol/Norgestimate ?

Read the directions on the prescription label. Do not take larger doses than prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication as directed on the label or by your pharmacist, doctor, or other healthcare provider. Take Ortho Tri-Cyclen (norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol) with or without food. Begin taking the pills either on the first Sunday after you have started your period or on the first day of your period. Use a back up contraceptive on the first month of taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen (norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol), such as a spermicide or a condom. Inform your doctor if it is very heavy or it continues. Each pill is taken every day, less than 24 hours apart. If pills are missed regularly, you may get pregnant. When it is near the end of a pack, get your prescription refilled. If you need to undergo surgery or have medical tests done, let your doctor or surgeon know you are on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo (ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate) because you may need to stop using the medication. It is important you see your doctor regularly while on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo (ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate), do not miss any doctor appointments. Talk to your doctor if any pills were missed.

When should Ortho Tri Cyclen 28 day /Ethinyl Estradiol/Norgestimate not be taken?

Do not take Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo (ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate) if you are pregnant, are allergic to any ingredient of the medication, currently taking troleandomycin, or have a history of problems with the blood vessels in the brain, heart, heart valve problems, heart attack, certain cancers such as breast or endometrial cancer, uncontrolled high blood pressure, abnormal or undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, if you had a stroke, serious liver problems or blood clots.

What precautions should I follow when taking Ortho Tri Cyclen 28 day /Ethinyl Estradiol/Norgestimate ?

Before taking Avonex (Interferon Beta), inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or breastfeeding; if you are taking prescription or over the counter medication, herbal preparation, or dietary supplements; if you are allergic to medicines, foods, or other substances; if you smoke cigarettes; if you recently had surgery, high blood pressure, epilepsy, high cholesterol or triglyceride levels in the blood, endometriosis, headaches or migraines, cancer, diabetes, obesity, irregular menstrual periods, urinary tract bleeding, gallbladder or kidney disease; depression, or breast nodules or abnomormal mammogram; if you have elevated calcium in the blood, yellowing of the skin or eyes, pancreatitis, tumors in the uterus, or heart problems; if you are currently taking any of the following drugs: Azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole), aprepitant, bosentan, barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), carbamazepine, felbamate, griseofulvin, HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir), hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), modafinil, nevirapine, penicillins, rifampin, St. John's wort, tetracyclines (eg, doxycycline), topiramate, or troglitazone, Beta-blockers (eg, metoprolol), corticosteroids (eg, hydrocortisone), cyclosporine, theophyllines, troleandomycin, or Lamotrigine.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Ortho Tri Cyclen 28 day /Ethinyl Estradiol/Norgestimate ?

When taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen (ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate), you will have an increased risk of blood clots, heart attack or stroke, especially if you are a smoke or are older than 35 years old.

When should Ortho Tri Cyclen 28 day /Ethinyl Estradiol/Norgestimate not be taken?

Severe: Trouble breathing or shortness of breath; swelling of fingers or ankles; calf/leg pain or swelling; chest pain; dizziness or fainting; changes in vision; difficulty wearing contact lenses; headache or sudden severe headache; lumps in the breast; numbness of an arm or leg; missed menstrual period; one-sided weakness; persistent or recurrent abnormal vaginal bleeding; slurred speech; severe stomach pain; yellowing skin or eyes, or severe allergic reactions such as itching, rash, difficulty breathing, hives, tightness in the chest, or swelling in the face, mouth, lips or tongue.

Common: Breast tenderness, bleeding between menstrual periods, vomiting, nausea, weight change.
