What is Orap /Pimozide used for?

Orap is used to treat severe muscle tics and speech tics in patients with Tourette syndrome when other medicines do not work.  Orap is an antispychotic agents. It works by blocking the action of dopamine, a naturally occurring chemical in the brain. 

How should Orap /Pimozide be stored?

Store Orap at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.  Keep medications out of reach of children and away from pets.

How should I take Orap/Pimozide ?

Use this medication as directed by your doctor.  Read the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions, and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.  Orap can be taken with or without food.  Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking Orap.   If you miss a dose of Orap, take this missed dose as soon as you remember.  If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with you regular dosing schedule.  Do not take more than one dose of Orap at a time.

When should Orap /Pimozide not be taken?

Do not use Orap if you are allergic to any ingredient in Orap.  If you are treating simple tics or tics other than those associated with Tourettes (eg, tics that are caused by certain medicines such as methylphenidate or pemoline) do not use Orap.  If you are taking medicines that cause a certain type of irregular heart beat such as certain heart medicines like quinidine, do not use Orap.  Do not use Orap if you are taking astemizole, cisapride, delavirdine, dofetilide, fluvoxamine, nefazodone, a ketolide antibiotic, a macrolide antibiotic, an anzole anti fungal, an HIV protease inhibitor, sertraline, terfenadine, or zileuton.  Avoid using Orap if you have congenital long QT syndrome, an irregular heartbeat, or a history of irregular heartbeat, low blood potassium or magnesium levels, or severe nervous system depression.

What precautions should I follow when taking Orap /Pimozide ?

Tell your doctor if you have any medical conditions before taking Orap.  These include if you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding.  Orap can cause harm to an unborn or nursing baby.  If you are taking any prescription or non prescription medicine, herbal medicines, or dietary supplements, inform your doctor before taking Orap.  If you have a history of liver or kidney problems, seizures, electroencephalogram abnormalities, glaucoma, low blood potassium or magnesium levels, or unusual growths or tumors in the brain. tell your doctor before using Orap.  Some medicines can interact with Orap. It is extremely important that you tell  your doctor about any other medicines you are taking before using Orap.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Orap /Pimozide ?

Orap can cause drowsiness or dizziness.  Do not drive, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Orap.  Using Orap alone, with specific other medicines, or with alcohol can lessen your ablitily to drive.  Orap will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants.  Avoid drinking alcohol while using Orap.  Do not become overheated in hot weather or in exercise while using Orap.  Heatstroke can occur.  Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a deadly syndrome assocaited with Orap.  Symptoms include increased body heat, rigid muscles, altered mental abilities, fast or irregular heartbeat, or sweating. Call your doctor immediately if these symptoms occur.  You may need to have your heart function, blood potassium, and magnesium levels tested while you are using Orap in order to monitor your progress and check for side effects. Attend all of your doctor and lab appointments.  Use Orap with caution in children younger than 12.  Safety and effectiveness in this group has not been confirmed.  If you suddenly stop using Orap, you may experience symptoms of withdrawal including involuntary movements of tongue, face, mouth, or jaw, or involuntary movements of arms and legs.

When should Orap /Pimozide not be taken?

Seek emergency medical attention if you have any of these severe side effects:  Signs of allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), decreased sexual function,  fever, involuntary

Less serious side effects include: constipation, drowsiness, or dry mouth.
