What is Micardis /Telmisartan used for?

Micardis is a medicine use to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).  It is in a group of drugs which work to lower blood pressure by decreasing certain chemicals in the body that cause blood vessels to constrict and cause sodium fluid to be stored by the kidneys.

How should Micardis /Telmisartan be stored?

Micardis should be stored at room temperature away from heat and moisture. Keep Micardis out of reach of children and pets.

How should I take Micardis/Telmisartan ?

Take Micardis exactly as directed by a doctor.  Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or for longer than directed by your doctor.  Occasionally your doctor may change your dose to make sure you get the best results.  Micardis can be taken with or without food.  To be sure Micardis is helping, have your blood pressure checked on a regular basis.  This medicine may need to be taken for 2 to 4 weeks before it begins to control your blood pressure.  For best results, use Micardis as directed. Continue to use this medication even if you feel fine. Consult your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 4 weeks of taking Micardis. 

When should Micardis /Telmisartan not be taken?

Do not use Micardis if you are allergic to Telmisartan.  Before taking Micardis, tell your doctor if you are currently taking a diuretic, digoxin, or a blood thinner.

What precautions should I follow when taking Micardis /Telmisartan ?

Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are pregnant.  Micardis may cause serious harm to an unborn baby.  If you become pregnant while using Micarids, stop use immediately and consult your doctor. Inform your doctor if you are nursing a baby before using Micardis.   Tell your doctor id you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, congestive heart failure, or if you are dehydrated before taking this medication. If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember.  If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.  Do not take more than one dose at a time. Avoid standing up or getting up to fast if you are in a lying position.  This may cause dizziness.  Get up slowly and steady yourself.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Micardis /Telmisartan ?

Avoid drinking alcohol when taking Micardis.  It may lower your blood pressure and increase some of the side effects of Micaris.  Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes while taking Micardis unless your doctor advises.  In some cases, Micardis may cause a condition which can result in the breakdown of muscle tissue.  Call your doctor immediately if you have muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have a fever, nausea, or vomiting, and dark colored urine. 

When should Micardis /Telmisartan not be taken?

Symptoms of overdose include: fast or slow heartbeat, dizziness, or feeling like you may pass out.  Seek emergency medical attention if you have used too much of this medicine.It you have any signs of allergic reaction such as hives, swelling of the faces, or difficulty breathing, get emergency medical help.

Serious side effects of Micardis include:  Feeling faint, painful or difficult urination, chest pain, feeling short of breath, swelling of the hands or feet. Less serious side effects include: runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, back pain, stomach pain, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, tired feeling, weakness, or  increased sweating.
