How should I take Flovent HFA/Fluticasone Propionate ?

Flovent should be used as prescribed by your physician. Follow the directions on the medication label for exact instructions. Do not use more or for longer than has been instructed. Flovent will come with patient instructions for effective and safe use as well as directions for priming the inhaler. Follow these carefully and be sure to ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if you have any questions regarding use of the medication. Flovent comes in liquid form that is used with an inhaler. This device creates a spray that you inhale through your mouth and into your lungs. Flovent Diskus comes in power form with a special inhaler device which is preloaded with blister packs containing measured doses of fluticasone. The device opens and loads a blister of fluticasone every time you use the inhaler. It is not to be used with a spacer. Shake the inhaler well before use. Rinse your mouth with water after using Flovent to prevent developing a yeast infection. Use the medication consistently and regularly to get the most benefit. Refill before you have depleted your current supply to avoid interruptions in your dosing schedule. If you miss a dose of Flovent, use it as soon as possible. If you do not remember until it is time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at one time to make up for a missed dose.

Flovent will not work fast enough to treat an asthma attack that has already begun. Use this device only for prevention. If you have an asthma attack, use a faster-acting inhalation medication to reverse your symptoms. Do not swallow the medication. Do not change your doses or medication schedule without consulting with your physician. Do not use Flovent as the primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute asthma conditions. People with moderate to severe bronchiectasis, active or inactive untreated pulmonary tuberculosis, untreated fungal, bacterial or viral infections should not use Flovent.
