How should I take Colestid Orange Granules/Colestipol ?

Take Colestid Orange Granules exactly as instructed by your doctor. Colestid Orange Granules should be mixed with liquids such as flavored drinks, orange juice, water, or tomato juice. Taking Colestid Orange Granules with carbonated beverages can cause stomach or intestinal discomfort. Colestid Orange Granules can also be mixed with pulpy fruit (crushed peaches, pears, or pineapple), fruit cocktail, and soups with a high liquid content (such as chicken noodle). To take Colestid Orange Granules with drinks measure at least 3 ounces of liquid in a glass, add the prescribed dose of Colestid Orange Granules and stir until completely mixed (granules will not dissolve). After drinking the mixture, add more liquid to the glass, swirl it around, and drink to make sure you drink all of the medicine in the glass

Do not take Colestid Orange Granules if you are allergic to any ingredient in Colestid.

What precautions should I follow when taking Colestid Orange Granules /Colestipol ?

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant while using Colestid Orange Granules. Talk to your doctor about breastfeeding while taking Colestid Orange Granules. Colestid Orange Granules interfere with the absorption of vitamins A, D, and K and can affect the mother and the nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you have an underactive thyroid gland, diabetes, nephrontic syndrome (a kidney disease), dysproteinemia (a blood disease), obstructive liver disease, or alcoholism before taking Colestid Orange Granules. Talk to your doctor about being on a diet plan that stresses low-cholesterol foods and weight loss. Tell your doctor about all prescription and non prescription medications that you use before taking Colestid Orange Granules. Some medicines interact.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Colestid Orange Granules /Colestipol ?

If you accidentally inhale Colestid Orange Granules they can cause serious effects. To prevent this, never take them in their dry form. Instead, always mix Colestid Orange Granules with water or other liquids before you take them. Have your cholesterol and triglyceride levels checked regularly while you are taking Colestid Orange Granules. Colestid Orange Granules can cause constipation. You may need to adjust your fluid and fiber intake to prevent constipation. A stool softener may also be needed occasionally. People with coronary artery disease must be especially careful to avoid constipation.

When should Colestid Orange Granules /Colestipol not be taken?

Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction to Colestid Orange Granules such as: rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue.

Less serious side effects include constipation, and worsening of hemorrhoids.
