What is Aredia /Pamidronate Disodium used for?

Aredia is used to treat high calcium levels in the blood as a result of cancer. Aredia can also be used to treat Paget disease and bone tumors caused by certain cancers. Aredia is a biphosphonate that works by reducing the normal and abnormal bone loss, which helps to maintain bone strength. This also helps reduce the amount of calcium in the blood in situations where blood calcium levels are too high.

Do not use Aredia if it contains particles, if the vial is cracked or damaged, or if the solution is cloudy or discolored. Keep Aredia, syringes, and needles out of reach of children and pets. Do not reuse needles or other injection supplies. Ask your pharmacist about how to dispose of these materials after use.

When should Aredia /Pamidronate Disodium not be taken?

Do not use Aredia if you are allergic to any ingredient in Aredia or to other biphosphonates.

What precautions should I follow when taking Aredia /Pamidronate Disodium ?

Some medical conditions can interact with Aredia. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant. Aredia can cause harm to a developing baby. Do not use Aredia if you are breast feeding a baby. This medication can pass through breast milk and harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor about any prescription and non prescription medications that you are using before taking Aredia. If you have stomach or bowel problems, low calcium blood levels, blood problems, kidney problems, or dental problems, tell your doctor before taking this medication. Tell your doctor if you have had thyroid surgery, if you have low parathyroid hormone levels, or if you are using chemotherapy or radiation.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Aredia /Pamidronate Disodium ?

Aredia can cause dizziness and drowsiness. This can become worse if you take Aredia with alcohol or certain other medications. Do not drive or perform any unsafe tasks until you know how you react to Aredia. Talk to your doctor about taking a calcium and vitamin D supplement with Aredia. Do not take a calcium or vitamin D supplement if you have high blood calcium levels, or without your doctor’s orders. Aredia can cause jaw bone problems in some patients with cancer who are using chemotherapy or corticosteroid medications, or who have poor dental hygiene. Talk to your doctor about an appropriate dental examination before you start using Aredia. These problems tend to be associated with dental procedures. Proper dental care is necessary while using Aredia. Brush and floss your teeth daily. Visit the dentist regularly. You may to have certain lab tests performed while you use Aredia. Do not miss any scheduled appointments.

Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction to Aredia such as: rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. Call your doctor if you experience any ser
