Biaxin Product Description

Biaxin is used to treat many different types of bacterial infections affecting the skin and respiratory system. It can be used in combination with other medicines to treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter Pylori.  Biaxmin is in a group of drugs called macrolide antibiotics that fight bacteria in the body.  Store Biaxin at room temperature.  Keep Biaxin away from moisture and heat.  Do not keep the oral liquid Biaxin in a refrigerator.  Keep away from children and pets.Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed to you by a doctor.  Do not take Biaxin in larger amounts or for longer than reccommended by your doctor.  Take Biaxin with a full glass of water.  Biaxin tablets and oral suspension can be taken with or without food.  Biaxin XL should be taken with food. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet.  Swallow the pill whole. Shake the oral suspension before you measure a dose.  To be sure you get the right dose, measure the liquid with a market measuring spoon or cup. Take Biaxin for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor.  Biaxin is generally prescribed for 7 - 14 days, or longer when treating a stomach ulcer.  You may find that your symptoms get better before the infection is completely treated. It is important to take Biaxin for the full length of time it was prescribed to you.  Biaxin will not treat a viral infection. If you miss a dose of Biaxin, take the dose as soon as you remember.  If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.  Do not take more than one dose at a time.  Do not use Biaxin if you are using any of the following drugs: cisapride (Propulsid), pimozide (Orap) or ergot medicine such as ergotamine.  They can interact with Biaxin and cause life threatening heart rhythm disorders. Do not use Biaxin if you are allergic to clarithromycin or to similar medicines like azithromycin, (Zithromax), dirithromycin (Dynabac), erthromycin (E.E.S., E-Mycin, Ery-Tab, Erythrocin), or troleandomycin (Tao). Do not give this medicine to a child younger than 6 months of age.If you have any of these conditions, you may need a dose adjustment to safely take Biaxin. Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease, myasthenia gravis, porphyria, or a personal family history of "Long QT syndrome".  Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant during treatment.  Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding.  It is unknown whether or not Biaxin passes into breast milk or if it can harm a nursing baby.   Tell your doctor about any prescription and non-prescription drugs that you use before taking Biaxin.  This includes vitamins, minerals, and herbal products as well. Biaxin and other antibiotic medications can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection.  If you have diarrha that is water or has blood in it, call your doctor.  Do not use any medication to stop the diarrhea unless your doctor has recommended it. Seek emergency medical help if you have any signs of allergic reaction to Biaxin including: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.  Call your doctor immediately if you have any of these serious side effects: uneven heartbeat, chest pain, shortness of breath, diarrhea that is watery or bloody, nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay -colored stools, jaundice, problems with hearing, fever, sore throat, headache with severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash.Less serious Biaxin side effects include: mild stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, upset stomach, unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth, tooth discoloration, dizziness, headache, anxiety, confusion, skin rash, vaginal itching or discharge.
