Description

This medication is a type of contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. The Ortho Gynol Contraceptive Jell is used before sexual intercourse or any genital contact begins. The Ortho Gynol Contraceptive Jell works by damaging and/or killing sperm in the vagina after it has been inserted or applied. As a result, sperm would not have been able to travel from the vagina to the uterus and fallopian tubes to fertilize an egg. This medication should be stored at room temperature. Keep the medication away from heat and moisture. Read the directions on the label. Apply or insert the Ortho Gynol Contraceptive Jell properly in the vagina. As directed on the label, use the correct amount. Once applied or inserted, wait for a period of time as directed on the label before having intercourse. If intercourse does not begin within half an hour after Ortho Gynol Contraceptive Jell has been applied or inserted, read the label for further instructions on applying more spermicide. When using the Ortho Gynol Contraceptive Jell with condoms, cervical caps, or diaphragms, read the label on the Ortho Gynol Contraceptive Jell to ensure the product can be used with latex condoms, cervical caps or diaphragms. If the instructions do not indicate the safety of latex condoms, cervical caps, or diaphragms to be used with Ortho Gynol Contraceptive Jell, the spermicide may cause condoms to break and cervical caps and diaphragms to weaken and leak during intercourse. Also, any oil based products (ie. hand, face, or body cream; petroleum jelly; cooking oils or shortening; or baby oil) should not be used with latex products because it will weaken the rubber increasing the chance of the rubber in cervical caps or diaphragms to break down faster and wear out sooner or condom breaking during intercourse. It is not recommended to use cervical caps and diaphragms during your menstrual period. It can increase the chance of developing toxic shock syndrome. It is advised to use a condom instead. After intercourse, vaginal douching is not advised or needed 6 to 8 hours after intercourse because it will stop the spermicide from working properly. Also, do not wash or rinse the vaginal or rectal area because it may wash the spermicde away before it can start working properly.Do not use the Ortho Gynol Contraceptive Jell if you have a history of toxic shock syndrome. If you have an allergic reaction to nonoxynol 9, octoxynol 9, or benzalkonium chloride, do not use the Ortho Gynol Contraceptive Jell without first talking to your doctor. Before using this medicine, tell your health care providers about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding; if you recently gave birth or had an abortion; if you have a history of toxic shock syndrome; allergies, irritations, or infections of the genitals; conditions or medical problems where it is important that pregnancy does not occur; sores on the gentials (sex organs); or irritation of the vagina. When using only a vaginal spermicide, preventing pregnancy is much less effective than IUD, birth control, or spermicdes used together with another form of birth control including condoms, cervical caps, or diaphragms. Pregnancy occurs in 21 of 100 women in the first year of only spermicide use. When using spermicides, you or your partner may feel stinging, burning, warmth, itching, or other irritation of the skin, sex organs, anus or rectum. Try using a weaker strength of Ortho Gynol Contraceptive Jell or try a spermicide with different ingredients. If the symptoms continue after you have used other products, you may have an allergic reaction to the products or an infection. Contact your doctor immediately.Severe: (Male and Female) Irritation, skin rash, redness, or itching that does not go away or subside within a short period of time; (Female only) increased frequency of urination, pain on urination, pain in bladder or lower abdomen; cloudy or bloody urine; thick, white, or curd-like vaginal discharg
