Nicoderm patches are used to help people quit smoking by reducing tobacco cravings. A certain amount of nicotine is in each individual patch and this allows for a constant stream of nicotine to be released into your bloodstream to keep stable but low levels in your body. Despite the total amount of nicotine being absorbed is less than from a cigarette, the patch allows withdrawal symptoms. NicoDerm patches are worn 24 hours a day and are available in 7, 14, or 21 milligram strengths.

Keep the patches in the wrapping until they are ready for use. Do not store the patches in temperatures higher than 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

IT is ok to wear the patches while swimming, bathing, showering, or in a hot tub since water does not harm the patch. In the case that the patch does fall off, apply a new patch after disposing of it carefully. Do not switch nicotine patch brands before talking to your doctor. If you haven’t been able to stop smoking after 10 weeks, the NicoDerm patch treatment will most likely not work for you.

NicoDerm should be part of an overall treatment process which may involve counseling, support, and behavior modification. This process should eliminate your need to smoke and not just reduce it.

Patient Family Information: Follow the written directions, your doctor’s instructions, and the prescription closely. The instructions generally state: Take a fresh patch out of its packaging and remove the protective liner from the adhesive; save the wrapper for later disposal of the used patch; tick the patch onto your outer upper arm or any clean, dry, non-hairy part of your trunk; Press the patch firmly onto your skin for about 10 seconds, making sure that the edges are sticking well; Wash your hands. Any nicotine sticking to your hands could get into your eyes or nose, causing irritation; After 16 or 24 hours (depending on the brand), remove that patch and apply a fresh patch to a different spot on your body. To reduce the chances of irritation, do not return to a previously used spot for at least a week; Fold the used patch in half, place it back in its own wrapper, and throw it in a trash container that cannot be reached by children or pets.

Do not take Nicotine Patches if you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to nicotine. Be cautious if you have ever had a bad reaction to a different brand of nicotine patch or to adhesive tape or other adhesive material.

Sever Side Effects: NicoDerm side effects cannot be anticipated. Talk to your doctor or seek medical attention if you feel that you are having strong side effects.

Common NicoDerm side effects may include: Dizziness, high blood pressure, itching and burning at the application site, nausea, redness of the skin

Other: None.
