Taking Control of Your Arthritis

Only those who suffer from arthritis truly understand the impact it can have on one’s life. Most people with arthritis find that they have difficulty making it a part of their everyday lives and moving on to do the things they enjoy. This is why it is important to take control of arthritis and not let it get the better of you.

There are various ways in which you can take control of your arthritis. An effective means of doing this is by educating yourself on all the various aspects of your arthritis. It will be helpful to get information specific to the type of arthritis, and degree of it. Just knowing more about what one is suffering from will give greater knowledge in terms of how to deal with it.

Pain is one of the most significant effects that arthritis has on the body. Dealing with it can be very difficult. In order to reduce discomfort, relaxation and sleep are vital. There is no need to feel as if you are wasting time by taking these breaks. Resting is a large part of reducing the pain of arthritis. It should be incorporated into your everyday life. Although rest is important it should accompany exercise. A balance of rest and exercise is recommended. Never let your arthritis be an excuse for not exercising. If proper exercise is not achieved, joints will become more stiff and weak.

Maintaining a healthy weight is also very important. An arthritis patient who is of healthy weight in comparison to an obese person will feel less pain. Obese arthritis patients will feel more pain because of the excess weight and pressure that is put on their joints. Eating a healthy diet alongside an exercise regime can help cut down weight.

Furthermore, in previous studies it was found that arthritis and depression are linked. Thus, having arthritis can lead to depression. This again is because of the feeling of not being able to live life to the fullest that most arthritis patients feel. Incorporating laughter into your life and putting a smile on your face can reduce pain and chances of developing depression drastically.

Consequently, many measures can be taken to protect your joints and live a happier, more comfortable life with arthritis. Even the littlest of things, like laughter, can help you improve your way of thinking and state of mind. Improving how you think will have an immediate impact on how you feel, and thus your overall condition.

Quitting Smoking

To start I think it's important to know how popular, yet how dangerous smoking is.  Below are listed statistics of global smoking issues:

  • Smoking induced diseases kill one in ten adults worldwide.
  • If the trends continue, in twenty years smoking will kill one in six people worldwide.
  • Every eight seconds, someone dies from tobacco use. That means that in the time it will take you to read this article approximately 10 people will have died.
  • In a day 10,800 people die from smoking induced diseases.
  • 15 billion cigarettes are sold daily, that means 10 million cigarettes are bought each minute.

Smoking can be more addicting than alcohol, cocaine, and heroin.  Nicotine is a highly addictive alkaloid poison that mimics the effects nerve signal transmitters have on your body. It increases your heart rate, lowers your blood pressure, and can cause nausea and dizziness.

In order to quit smoking many products have been created from pills like Chantix, to patches, to gum. These quitting methods work because they slow the absorption of nicotine into your body. Although you may not get the same adrenaline rush that you would with a smoke, the small amounts of nicotine being slowly absorbed into your system help reduce withdrawal symptoms when quitting smoking.

Once you quit smoking its possible for your body to naturally heal over time. In just 3 days your blood oxygen and carbon monoxide levels return to normal, your sense of taste and smell improves, and your lung capacity increases. After 15 years your risk of dying from a heart attack is equal to a person who has never smoked.

Gardening with Allergies

Spring and summer hay fever affects up to 30% of all Americans. Avid gardeners that suffer from seasonal allergies are well aware that it becomes almost impossible to feel comfortable while spending time in the garden.
Although hay fever usually starts during infancy, it can happen at any time – even well into adulthood.  Genes and the immune system are to blame for the watery eyes and runny noses that plague us in the springtime.  If your parents both suffer from allergies; there’s a 66% chance you will too.  The immune system reacts to different allergens and releases histamines that irritate and inflame the membranes that line the nose and create symptoms of an allergic reaction, thus producing a scratchy throat, runny nose, and watery eyes.  Sometimes allergy symptoms can decrease in severity or even vanish completely later in life.  If you aren’t so lucky – here are some tips on preventing symptoms of seasonal allergies while gardening from expert allergist/immunologist Dr. Susan Waserman, a professor at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont.

Prepare Before Planting

Over-the-counter antihistamine medications are great for treating mild symptoms of hay fever, but Dr. Waserman advises that the essential treatment is intranasal corticosteroids.  These steroidal nasal sprays attack your symptoms at the source and only need to be administered twice a day.  It takes a couple weeks for these sprays to be fully effective, so take the medication early. Talk to your doctor about using corticosteroids. If you suffer from more severe symptoms, speak to your doctor about allergy desensitization injections which are also effective in treatment for pollen.

Choose the Right Time

Pollination is most concentrated between 5 am and 10 am and in the late afternoon.  Try to avoid being in the garden during these times and plan your day accordingly.  Although pollen counts don’t need to be high to trigger symptoms, it is still useful to know when ideal conditions are.  Pollen levels are also lower after rainfall. 

Choose Your Plants Wisely

Some plants are more likely than others to trigger allergy symptoms.  Before deciding what plants you want in your garden, ask your allergist to see which types of plants trigger your allergies.  This way, you can determine what you need to avoid – even though pollens from other gardens will still travel to you.  There are several factors involved in determining how allergenic a plant is. According to Waserman, the sex, the size, the shape, the color, the quality of the pollen, and the way the plant is pollinated can all trigger your allergy symptoms.  For instance, plants that have small blooms and no fragrance produce large amounts of light pollen. These plants are the worst for allergies because their pollen travels farther and is more likely to be inhaled.  On the other hand, plants that have large, bright flowers, and have fragrance produce heavier, larger pollen.  These plants rely on insect pollination and are less likely to be airborne.

Choose the Girls

Try to avoid buying all wind-pollinated plants – unless they are available in a female version. Female plants receive pollen instead of producing it.  You can also buy male plants whose pollen sits deep within blossoms.  Ask a professional at your local nursery for help choosing plants by their sex.   When it comes to trees, avoid planting male trees that don’t produce fruit, seeds, or flowers.  These are the worst plants for your hay fever. 

Mask yourself

Some people believe that masks like 3M’s Pollen Filter Mask work wonders.  These may protect you from a wide variety of pollens; however they may not be effective for all types of allergies.

Wear Gloves

People prone to atopic dermatitis should wear hand protection while gardening.  Eczema can flare up on contact with allergens in the soil and on plants.

Landscape Accordingly

Dr. Waserman warns that grasses not only produce a hefty amount of pollen, but they also trap pollen and mold which becomes disturbed when the lawn is mowed. Avoid ornamental grasses which produce the highest amounts of pollen.  If you are going to landscape your lawn, consider replacing some of your grass with a low-allergen flower garden or a patio. Mow your grass weekly to prevent it from flowering and producing pollen.

Clean up

After spending some time in the garden, have a shower and change your clothes.  Pollen likes to stick to hands, clothing, and hair.  If you don’t get a chance to wash your hair, change your pillow case the next day in case pollen was transferred to the cloth overnight.

Depression - How to Beat the Blues

It is expected that in a year that depression will be the second most common illness globally.  This distressing illness affects almost ten percent of the adult population (nearly 19 million people) in the United States. Thankfully there are specific things you can do to reduce depression symptoms in your life.

Exercise – One of the number one things you can do to reduce depression symptoms is to exercise. Taking just 30 minutes out of your daily routine and getting a bit of exercise can help substantially. Exercise is beneficial for people of all ages; it helps cope with stress and can help you feel more relaxed. 

Surround yourself with happy people – The saying "You are who you spend time with" is too true.  When a person is suffering from depression it is best that they spend time with positive people. Their condition could be worsened if they chum with negative people. Negativity and positivity are infectious.

Eat well – Certain foods, as well as eating healthy in general can help reduce depression symptoms. Avoid skipping meals, especially breakfast. Amino acids, Vitamin B6 and B12, magnesium, and Omega 3 are all proven to reduce the effects of depression. These nutrients can be found in seafood, beans, milk, eggs, cheese, bananas, and other foods.
Listen to music – Music is very powerful. The type of music you’re listening to can alter your mood. If you listen to music that you enjoy and that isn’t anchored with bad experiences (a song that is in some way connected with a bad memory) it can boost your mood significantly.

Take a nap – Sometimes all it takes is a little physical rest to help your body and mind's state improve. Stress is easy to cure with some sleep. This is possibly the best option for a quick mood makeover.
