Healthy Eating on a Budget

Lately, more and more people have begun to attempt to eat healthier; but while we are all on a budget, eating healthy and keeping our wallets in check can be a little frustrating. With a few smart tips, improving your diet and saving money doesn't have to be as hard as it may seem. By following some of these helpful tips, you will be on your way to a healthier and happier you in no time!

Shopping at the farmer's market and buying foods that are in season is a great way to save money and eat well. Buying vegetables doesn't mean you have to just eat vegetables, be creative! Shakes and smoothies are a great way to add a little change to your diet and allow you to mix in other foods as well!

Buying a share in CSA (community supported agriculture) is an easy way to save money. Shares are normally around four hundred dollars or so, but you get a weekly box of produce in the growing season. Joining a food co-op works well too; members usually receive a discount of around five to ten percent.

Grow your own food! Having a small garden is a great way to save a little extra money and be certain you are getting organic, healthy vegetables.

Moving away from vegetables, chilli is a great food to make for dinner because it is easily stored and can be used for dinner more than once. Whole grain pasta is good as well because it is delicious and affordable. Adding some vegetables to either of these meals will make it more exciting and nutritious.

By keeping close watch on what you are buying and following these tips, you will be well on your way to eating healthier and being happier.

10 Ways for Keeping Your New Year's Resolution

1. Outline Your Plan – Arranging how you will accomplish your goal and what steps you are going to take will help in the long run. Not having any idea of where to begin your goal will just make you want to put it off more. If you are looking to lose weight, plan out some healthy meals you would be interested in and create a schedule for a good time to work out. Create manageable portions to help you reach your goal.

2. Stick To One Goal – Having ten different resolutions will create problems so nothing will be accomplished. Choosing one goal that you know you will stick to and are motivated to achieve will end in success. Trying to do everything at once would most likely result in failure.

3. A List Of Pros and Cons – Making a list that shows all the good that can come out of the accomplishment of your goal can create self motivation. Thinking on the better side will add more to the Pros side, giving you all the motivation you need. Keep the list nearby in case you're thinking of eating that extra slice of pizza.

4. Start With The Small Picture – Taking small steps towards a bigger goal will make your resolution seem easier. Be realistic. Losing 20 pounds in the first week of the New Year is not that great of a start. Starting off with eating right and exercising will get you to lose those 20 pounds in no time. The difference will come with more motivation as the year goes on.

5. Get Support – Not being afraid to let people know what you are trying to achieve will be all the more helpful. The more people you tell, the more support you have if you fall behind. Getting tips and finding help in others is nothing to be scared of.

6. Begin At A Good Time – Starting right when the New Year begins may work; but the gloomy winter weather might get you down. Choosing the right time of year can be hard but you should start when you feel you are motivated enough. Of course don't start in September when the year is almost gone. Start off in the spring when the weather is nice and the change in season will correspond with the change you wish to see in yourself.

7. Track Your Change – Seeing is believing. And seeing your progress as the year goes on will push you further towards your goal. As you go on to see how well you have done in keeping your resolution, more motivation will come to achieve that goal or even create an even bigger goal for yourself. Create check points during the year to help show how well you are doing.

8. Treat Yourself – Show yourself that through hard work comes happiness. Rewarding yourself every now and then does not hurt. It will give you something to look forward to. Keep the rewards small because in the end, those little rewards will be nothing compared to the huge difference you see in yourself.

9. Stick To It – Stay with your goal any way that you can. If you are trying to lose weight, find ways to avoid fatty foods or if you are looking to stop smoking, find a distraction from it. On average, it will take someone 21 days to create a habit out of something and 6 months for that habit to turn into a lifestyle. Sticking to your goal will become who you are, making it that much easier.

10. You Are In Charge – Don't let anyone or anything get you down. You make your progress at your own pace, not anyone else's. Don't put yourself down when you get off track a little. Do what you can each day to make yourself happy. Show a strong sense of control of your goal otherwise you might just lose sight of what you wanted in the first place.

Young GirlsLooking older for one's age is presumed to be a result of poor health. In contrast to this popular belief, looking older for one's age does not necessarily indicate poor health. A recent study conducted at St. Michael's Hospital revealed that a person could appear up to five years older than their actual age without being in poor health. "Physicians have assumed that their quick assessment of how old someone looks have some diagnostic value. Few people are aware that that when physicians describe their patients to other physicians they often include an assessment of whether the patient looks older than his or her age," said Dr.Stephen Hwang, a research scientist at St. Michael's Hospital and an associate professor at the University of Toronto.

Ever wonder whether the tales or advice your grandparents have passed down to you or your parents really work? You may have heard of an old wives’ tale passed down through your family and while it may seem outlandish, sometimes they are true.

1) What to do when you are stung by a bee:

What are you suppose to do when the stinger of the bee is left in your skin? Well first of all remove any stingers immediately from your skin! The longer it remains in the body, the more severe the reaction to the sting will be. Be sure not to scrape the top of the stinger off, but remove it completely. React quickly!

2) Put Butter On A Burn?

For burn treatment, does putting butter on the burn help? No, putting butter on a burn will not help the burning sensation associated with a burn. It can actually aggravate the burn more as it holds in heat. To treat burns, the first step is to cool it then use a topical cream to help relieve the pain. A few of the creams you can use include: Xylocaine, Neosporin and Flamazine. These creams are just a few of the possible ones used for treatment of burns. Talk to your doctor for further options.

3) What to do when you are bit by a snake?

Well, first of all, don’t resort to using those snake bite kits. Some snake bite kits will want you to cut into the wound, but that’s the last thing you want. It will just create infections! You don’t want to suck the wound either; just get in touch with emergency medical services as snake bites can be deadly. In order to reduce the movement and spread of venom, you can splint the area of the wound.

4) When you are hyperventilating, should you breathe into a paper bag?

Breathing into a paper bag is not necessary. If you start hyperventilating, your goal will be to raise the carbon dioxide level in your blood, which will put an end to most of your symptoms. There are several ways to do this:

A. Get reassurance from a friend or family member to help relax your breathing. Words like "you are doing fine," "you are not having a heart attack," and "you are not going to die" are very helpful. It is extremely important that the person helping you remain calm and deliver these messages with a soft, relaxed tone.

B. To increase your carbon dioxide, you need to take in less oxygen. To accomplish this, you can breathe through pursed lips (as if you are blowing out a candle) or you can cover your mouth and one nostril, and breathe through the other nostril.

5) Urinating on a Jellyfish Sting

Many have heard the saying that when stung by a jellyfish, one should pee on the wound. Does it work? Well, not always. Urine can enable the jellyfish stingers to release additional venom into the body. So what is a good substitute? You could try ammonia, vinegar, vodka, water, denatured alcohol but none of these is a guaranteed solution.

6) Lean back with a nosebleed?

You may have heard from your mom to lean back with a nosebleed, but is that the ideal technique? The answer is no; leaning back will cause you to swallow the blood, which can upset the stomach. Blood could even get in the windpipe, blocking the airway if you lean back. So the best technique is to lean forward and pinch your nose firmly over the fleshy part to help stop the bleeding. Remember, you can always get a new shirt.

7) Got a black eye? Put a raw steak on it.

You have probably have heard of this one before, but does it work? Once again, the answer is no. In fact, it is likely that it will cause an infection. Yes, the cold the steak provided can keep the swelling down, but an icepack is the better option. Before providing treatment to any individual, it is important to do some research. While your ancestors may have passed down some tips over the years, it would be wise to double check before implementing any of them.
