What is Zetia/Ezetimibe Used for?

Zetia helps treat high cholesterol by reducing the amount of cholesterol and other sterols that the body can absorb from your diet. Zetia can be sometimes used with other cholesterol lowering medications and it can also be used to treat high.

How should I take Zetia/Ezetimibe?

Follow your doctor’s orders and the prescription label instructions when taking Zetia. Do not take larger doses than recommended. Take Zetia at the same time each day, once a day, with or without food. Zetia is usually taken once a day, with or without food. Try to take Zetia at the same time each day. Zetia can be taken at the same time as some other medications such as fenofibrate (Antara, Lipofen, Lofibra, TriCor, Triglide), or with any of the "statin" drugs such as lovastatin (Mevacor), simvastatin (Zocor), pravastatin (Pravachol), fluvastatin (Lescol), or atorvastatin (Lipitor). Remember that it can take up to 2 weeks for cholesterol levels to improve; continue to use the medication as directed by your doctor. Have your blood tested regularly and do not miss any visits.

When should Zetia/Ezetimibe not be taken?

Do not use Zetia if you are allergic to ezetimibe or have liver disease. If you have any of the following conditions, inform your doctor: kidney disease; a thyroid disorder; or if you use steroid medicine or hormones (including birth control pills). Do not take Zetia if you pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breast feeding.

What precautions should I follow when taking Zetia/Ezetimibe?

While taking Zetia avoid eating high cholesterol and high fat foods.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Zetia/Ezetimibe?

Do not take the following medications with Zetia: cholestyramine (Prevalite, Questran), colestipol (Colestid), or colesevelam (Welchol). Wait at least 4 hours after taking any of these medicines before you take Zetia. You may also take Zetia 2 hours before taking any of these other medicines.

What are the side effects of Zetia/Ezetimibe?

Serious Zetia side effects include (Seek medical attention immediately): unusual muscle weakness, tenderness, or pain; nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); chest pain; pancreatitis (severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and vomiting, fast heart rate); or fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash.

Less serious Zetia side effects include: numbness or tingly feeling; mild stomach pain, diarrhea; tired feeling; headache; dizziness; depressed mood; runny or stuffy nose, cold symptoms; joint pain, back pain; or cough.

In rare instances, cholesterol lowering medicine can cause the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue which can lead to a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue. This condition can lead to kidney failure. Call your doctor at once i
