Is there a statement you cannot say “yes” to? Make sure you ask one of our Customer Care Associates or Pharmacy Assistants for more information. >> back to top Better Health from using Medication in Blister Packs, says StudyAn important study just published in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association shows improved health for patients whose medications were packaged using blister packs, compared to patients who had medications packaged in a bottle. Blister packaging, also called adherence packaging, helps patients to track whether they have taken their medication. Standard packaging such as tablets in a bottle does not help patients keep track of medication use. “We encourage all patients taking medications to make use of blister packaging,” says Dr. Paul Zickler of DoctorSolve Healthcare Solutions. “Blister packaging was proven to be a great benefit to patients in a study done more than 40 years ago. It is not surprising the latest study also shows better outcomes for patients.” The study was a randomized controlled trial that took place during a 2-1/2 year period at several US ambulatory care clinics, and followed 85 individuals 65 years of age or older being treated with lisinopril for hypertension. Study authors wanted to evaluate medication adherence and treatment outcomes in elderly outpatients using daily-dose blister packaging (Pill Calendar) compared with medications packaged in bottles of loose tablets. “Providing medications in a package that identifies the day each dose is intended to be taken and provides information on proper self-administration can improve treatment regimen adherence and treatment outcomes in elderly patients,” say the study authors. “If the packaging helps a DoctorSolve customer remember to take their medications at the right time, then their health outcome could improve. That’s the bottom line,” says Zickler. On your next order, ask your Patient Care Associate if blister packing is available for your medication. You may find it will help you too! >> back to top
