Surgery May Help Diabetics Reduce or Eliminate Their Need for Medications

Diabetes is a fairly common disease that millions of people in the United States are living with each and every day. While diabetes is manageable, the cost of medications to do so can often become difficult to afford. However, results from researchers at Johns Hopkins University may be very promising to certain people suffering from diabetes.

Researchers observed 2,235 adults living with Type 2 diabetes, which is generally associated with being overweight, who received stomach-reducing surgery. What these researchers discovered was that after only 6 months, almost 75% of those who received surgery were no longer taking their diabetic medications. Furthermore, 2 years following the surgery, 84.5% of those who received surgery were now free of their diabetes medication or in many cases, multiple medications.

Not only were many of these patients able to experience a significant decline in their weight after the surgery, they were also able to experience a significant decline in their healthcare costs. With the price of medications in the United States being as high as they are, reducing or eliminating the dependence of medications can make such a difference in a person’s life.

However, researchers made another interesting discovery while observing these patients. While they found that stomach-reducing surgery allowed patients to stop taking their diabetic medications, they found that this became possible even before patients began to experience weight loss from the surgery. This could support theories that suggest that surgery actually alters the stomach hormones, allowing them to control blood glucose levels more effectively.

While there are certain risks associated with this surgery, for diabetics, the benefits may heavily outweigh the risks. In the end a person should discuss the options with their doctor, family, then weigh their options and decide what will be best for themselves.

5 Myths about Drinking Water

Filed under: water — Tags: dehydration, drinking water, healthy skin, rid of toxins, water, water myths, weight loss — Candace @ 4:27 pm

No one will argue that drinking water is not important for one’s health. Water is extremely beneficial and vital to everyone, but there are a few myths commonly spread about waters effectiveness.

  • Drink 8 Glasses of Water a Day – Everyone has heard this myth. The worst thing is, no one has any idea where it came from. How much water should you actually drink? Experts say to drink when you are thirsty. It is not common for people to drink too much water, so go ahead and drink up.
  • Drinking Lots of Water Will Help Weight Loss – Drinking excessive amounts of water will do nothing to weight loss. It is true that if you drink water you can make your stomach feel full without having all the calories. Drinking water and limiting eating together can help you lose weight, but water itself has no magical fat reducing powers.
  • Extra Water Means Healthier Looking Skin – Your body is about 60 percent water. For example someone who is 200 pounds is 120 pounds of just water. If you add a couple of extra glasses of water a day it has a restricted effect. Although 500 mL of water will make blood rush to the skin it is not the cause of healthy skin.
  • Drinking Lots of Water Can Flush Out Toxins – The kidneys are what filter toxins from our blood. Experts say drinking extra amounts of water does not help the kidneys function, but rather hinders it. The chances of you drinking too much water are rare though, so it is not a concern.
  • Dehydration Often Occurs During Workouts – Dehydration happens when a person has lost 2 percent of their body weight. This means for a 150 pound person, 3 pounds of water. Dehydration may be more common for marathon runners, bikers, and hikers.  It is recommended that you drink 16 ounces of fluid a couple hours before exercising.

Eating Meat Linked to Weight Gain

Filed under: nutrition — Tags: calories, diet, exercise, meat, nutrition, Protein, weight loss — John @ 5:43 pm

A European study found that a higher intake of meat may result in weight gain. Processed meats (sausages) were associated with the greatest risk of gaining weight. This research shows that high-protein diets may not actually help in the long run.

Even after researchers took overall calorie intake, physical activity, and other factors into consideration, the weight gain associated with eating meat was still quite significant. Researchers are not quite certain why eating meat may cause weight gain in people eating a regular number of calories.

While eating regular portions of meat can cause weight gain, another thing to look at is many of us eat too much meat to begin with. Portion sizes are often much smaller than many people are aware of. Lack of proper information then results in eating unnecessary and unhealthy amounts of meat.

Meat can be substituted from our diets; vegetarians have obviously already proven this. I’m am not saying stop eating meat altogether. However, you may wish to substitute meats occasionally for other foods, such as an egg, vegetables, etc. What is important is that you find a healthy and balanced diet that you enjoy.

Get Your Summer Body

Filed under: weight loss — Tags: bathing suit, beach body, diet, exercise, nutrition, summer, weight loss — John @ 9:18 pm

With summer here, it’s time to grab the bathing suit and go to the beach for some fun in the sun. However, there are many of us that are ashamed to show our bodies in a bathing suit. For some it’s the belly they have an issue with, while others hate their legs. In order to get in shape for the summer, you have to balance your eating and exercise, and you must be consistent.

Many of us overeat far too often. Every once and a while isn’t so bad, but when it is happening every day, there’s a problem. Try to limit the amount of food you eat every sitting, but increase the number of meals you eat per day. You should try to have 4-5 small meals throughout the day, but try not to overeat. Also, make sure you are eating quality foods. If you are eating 4 or 5 small meals a day, but all of those meals are from McDonalds, it really won’t help your situation. Eating smart is one half of the weight loss puzzle.

If you’ve got the eating part down, then you need to remember to exercise. When you do exercise, do not limit yourself to only doing cardio, or only lifting weights. You need to use both to help get rid of that extra weight. Try to fit in some cardio 4 or 5 times a few and weight lifting 2 or 3 times a week. It’s important to remember that you shouldn’t only focus on one body part when lifting weights. You need to work out all of your muscles.

Consistency is the foundation of losing weight. You have to be consistent and develop a routine in order for you to be successful. Try and find exercises that you enjoy, as these will probably make it easier for you to want to work out.
