H1N1 in Pets?
When we think of H1N1, we see people with masks, people getting their flu shots, perhaps people sick at home with the flu. But what if you were a pet? It's not as easy to wash your hands, get a shot, and stay away from people. Fleas and dry skin aren't the only thing you need to worry about. A 13-year old Tabby cat was recently diagnosed with H1N1, the first confirmed case of a cat contracting this influenza. The cat in question is an indoor house cat who never has contact with other animals. It is believed that the cat picked up the virus from his owners who were both recently sick with H1N1. Other animals who have been diagnosed with H1N1 include pigs, turkeys, and several pet ferrets. Unlike popular belief, it is said that the disease passes from human to animal, not animal to human. The symptoms of the Tabby's flu were fatigue, loss of appetite, and trouble breathing. In behavior he had stopped cleaning himself, and rested in a crouching position. After being given fluids and antibiotics, the cat has recovered from the flu. It's known that pets can contract some forms of flu. Cats can contract the Avian flu, horses and dogs can get the Canine influenza (there's even a flu shot for dogs) But this is the first time we've seen a house cat contract H1N1. Officials say that you should take the same precautions for your cat as you would. If you feel like you are sick try not to touch your pets too much in order to prevent spreading the virus and make sure you and your pet have a healthy immune system. Impact of flu infection lessened by statin drugs
Research lead by Meredith Vandemeer of Oregon's Public Health Division with the help of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention studied 2,800 hospitalized people with the flu in 2007/2008. It was determined that those taking statins ( cholesterol-lowering drugs) were 50% less likely to die from the infection than those who were not taking any form of statin. Of the patients studied, 801 were taking statins anyway and continued taking them while hospitalized. Seventeen H1N1 patients who were taking statins died either while in the hospital or several weeks later, compared to 64 who were not taking statins, Vandermeer said. The conclusion gives concerns about H1N1 because they suggest that statins reduce the inflammatory symptoms common in both pandemic and seasonal flu. These results may spark the attention of the pharmaceutical industry hoping to extend the revenue of top selling drugs through new disease indications. Meredith Vandemeer suggests that "there may be a role for statins in influenza treatment". This is not the first time a group has studied statins' dual anti-inflammatory and anti-influenza benefits. In 2006 a paper was published in the Journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases "Pandemic Influenza: A potential role for statins in treatment and prophylaxis" suggested that statins had protective effects in bacteriamia, sepsis and pneumonia. Research teams are now performing analysis to test the effectiveness of one brand over another. It is also suggested that statins may help patients by lowering inflammation. When a flood of chemicals and cells are summoned to fight viral and bacterial invaders, inflammation is part of the body's immune response. Statin drugs include Crestor, Pravachol, Lovastatin. H1N1 Vaccine Approved By United States Health Officials
For anyone that is fearful of contracting Swine Flu there is good news. United States health officials have approved the H1N1 vaccines and have said that there will be enough for everyone. Am I sold on the ideas that the vaccines works and there really will be enough for everyone? I'm not too sure.
The vaccine probably works mildly and does help prevent the contraction of Swine Flu, but I don't think it is the cure to stopping the spread of the virus. I mean even some of the best defenses can't stop everything. The Steelers can't stop all of the plays the Colts through at them, but they can sure stop most of them.
Now as for there being enough vaccines for all of America I'm not so sure there will be. However, at the same time I'm not sure there will need to be enough vaccines for all 300 million or so people in the United States. I don't think the government and drug manufacturers can supply that many people, but I doubt that everyone will want one, even though they will be free.
Either way the option of getting the vaccine is out there. Whether or not you actually go and get the vaccine is up to you.

Swine Flu Now a Pandemic
Welcome to the summer of the Swine Flu Pandemic. Just as schools close for the Summer Vacation, the World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared Swine Influenza as a pandemic, the highest level possible.
When the Swine flu first began to spread in Mexico many were wondering, how long it would take until the swine flu became a pandemic, not if the swine flu would become a pandemic. As the Swine Flu spread globally many people became infected, yet the severity of the flu was very mild. Though the death toll has not been great, the speed at which the virus spread was incredible. This led to much deliberation by the WHO, and the eventual declaration of a pandemic.
Many seem to think this is too drastic of a step, but let us not forget, "better safe than sorry." Even though the virus is not a relatively deadly threat at the moment, WHO Director-General, Dr. Margaret Chan says, "it is prudent to anticipate a bleaker outcome." Think about it this way, if the virus does mutate, which almost all the major pandemics have done (Spanish Influenza, approximately 50 million dead), then at least we will be better prepared to deal with the illness. Additionally if we begin producing vaccinations we may be able to prevent the virus from infecting millions by the time it does become a significant problem.
While many members of the general public seem to find such a relatively harmless virus reaching pandemic levels, many experts think it has not happened soon enough. Dr. Thomas Frieden, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says, "This is not a surprise, for all intents and purposes, the United States government has been in phase 6 of the pandemic for some time now."
Now I would love to see the Swine Flu pass by so we can later say, "Man remember that Pandemic back in '09, what a joke," but only time will reveal the answers to the future of the Swine Influenza Pandemic.

Swine Influenza Spreads to the U.S

The Swine influenza as many know has become a hot topic recently with the widespread presence of the virus. Mexico has been hit hardest by Swine Flu, causing many to become ill and some to succumb to the virus, resulting in death. However, it is not only Mexico that is now feeling the effects of the disease that may evolve into a full-scale pandemic. The Swine flu has begun to make itself felt on American soil. A new enemy for the superpower to battle, the Swine influenza has infected a reported 64 people in the United States, as of April 28, 2009. President Obama has asked congress for $1.5 billion to help battle the current and potential cases of the virus by stockpiling different medicines such as, Tamiflu (oseltamivir) an antiviral drug, and the hiring of personnel. Federal officials have declared a National Public Health Emergency, and even California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has declared a state of emergency due to the outbreak of the virus. However, officials would like to remind everyone not to panic and this is not yet considered a "crisis response." Currently, there have been 45 confirmed cases in New York, 10 in California, 6 in Texas, 2 in Kansas, and 1 in Ohio. Though a reported 149 people have been killed in Mexico due to the virus, none have died in the United States. However, it is advised that you should begin any preventative measures you are able to do. The first and most important thing to remember is something you may have heard your mother tell (or if you didn't listen, yell at) you, remember to always, always, always wash your hands. That does not mean just turn the tap on run you hands under water for a couple of seconds. Take the time to thoroughly and properly wash your hands, use soap and warm water if at all possible. Get some sleep, its good for your overall health and not to mention your mood, nobody wants to be around someone who's cranky. Exercise, get some physical education in, grab a bat and play some ball. Eat healthy. A balanced diet can help boost your body's immune system. Labels: swine flu, swine flu treatment, swine influenza, tamiflu
