Swine Flu Myths You Need To Know

When you think of myths you probably think of something like Sasquatch or some other random creature that has never really been found. Most of the people who report actual "sightings" of such creatures are quite... interesting individuals. For the most part I'm sure that alcohol or some other substance was involved.

However, when it comes to H1N1, or commonly known as Swine Flu, there are many myths that have recently spread faster than the virus itself. Some of these myths though, unlike Sasquatch, can actually result in serious consequences.

1.Only People With Weak Immune Systems Die From Swine Flu-
While having a weak immune system doesn't help defend against the virus, people with strong, healthy immune systems have also been victims of fatal Swine Flu attacks.

2.If You Get Swine Flu You'll ALWAYS Get A Fever-
While Swine Flu and the regular seasonal flu do share many of the same symptoms, and fever is one of them, you do not ALWAYS get a fever. In fact only about half of the people with Swine Flu actually experience a fever.

3.Swine Flu Is Just A Mild Form Of The Flu, It Doesn't Even Kill As Many People As Seasonal Flu-
The death toll isn't as large as seasonal flu, but the Swine flu is fatal. The main problem with this myth is that seasonal flu is more likely to cause death in the elderly, whereas Swine Flu targets the young, who should have a stronger immune system.

4.I Can Avoid Swine Flu By Taking Vitamins, Wearing A Mask, Washing My Hands, And Drinking A Lot Of Fluids- This may HELP avoid the swine flu, but it isn't necessarily the best and most effective way to prevent Swine Flu. Getting vaccinated is the most effective way of defending against Swine Flu. However, don't just stop doing things like washing your hands regularly as this cuts down on the transmission of Swine Flu.

5.I Don't Have To Worry About Swine Flu Now That There's A Vaccine- Yes, getting vaccinated is the most effective may to prevent Swine Flu, however it does not GUARANTEE that you will not get Swine Flu. Take precautionary measures to avoid transmission.

6.If Swine Flu Hasn't Become Deadlier By Now, It Never Will-
Nobody knows what the virus will do. It could stay in its present form forever, but it could just as easily change into a deadlier virus. The only thing we can do is try to limit the transmission of Swine Flu, and be prepared if it does change. You shouldn't just expect the best-case scenario. It's better to be ready for the worst outcome and have nothing change than expect the best and have the virus transform into something like the Spanish Influenza that killed millions.

Get In Line For The H1N1 Vaccine

Yes, the vaccine is here, but you might have to wait a little while before you can get it. The line ups for the H1N1 vaccine could have a person convinced that a big name musical group has just come to town. That or everyone went to the amusement park and the best roller coaster broke down.

How bad are the lines? Well lets put it this way, hundreds actually "camped out" and waited for doors to open. Much like I plan to do when the next Call of Duty comes out (man I can't wait for Modern Warfare 2). Now I'm not sure how smart it is to wait outside in the freezing cold, but these people definitely have determination. And I admire determination.

For a long time many people have seemed divided on the topic of the effectiveness, and the necessity of a vaccine, but as anyone can see, there are many people that have bought into the "Swine Flu Scare," but who can blame them. Even I'm still debating whether or not I should get vaccinated.

If you do plan on receiving the vaccine I offer the best of luck to you, and I hope you don't have to stay outside very long. I also hope the vaccine works for you. Getting sick is just not fun.

Food For The Flu

Well, if you haven't noticed the weather has been getting a lot colder and that means flu season is just around the bend. Many people expect that this flu season will be significantly worse than previous ones due to Swine flu still being active.

No one likes being sick, well except that one guy from Ferris Beuller's Day Off, and there are indeed some ways to keep yourself from getting sick. Most of these you probably know already, wash your hands, get plenty vitamin D and C, etc. However, there are some foods that you can eat to help keep you healthy, some you might have never thought of.

Yogurt- Yogurts will help you maintain those pro-biotic functions. Pro-biotics help keep your good bacteria together and diseases and flu away.

Garlic- Garlic is really quite the super food. Although it may result in giving you some bad breath garlic will help you fight off bacterial infections.

Oats and Barley- Oats and Barely contain a significant amount of fiber that contains antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Consuming a lot of oats or barely will lessen your chances of getting a disease/flu. They also help speed up the healing process and boost your immune system.

Chicken Noodle Soup- Many of the items in chicken noodle soup help heal and prevent sickness. The soup can thin mucus membranes and provide your body with amino acids that block the inflamed immunity cells that cause flu symptoms.

Sweet Potatoes- Sweet potatoes contain a lot of vitamin A which helps you skin feel soft. However, vitamin A can also help protect your body on a whole as well. So why not go ahead and try some sweet potatoes.

Make sure you try to stay active and exercise. Physical activity can help boost your immune system. However, remember to dress appropriately and if you go to a gym, wash your hands after. Vitamin supplements can also be a good option.

Two Swine Flu Vaccine Shots Needed For Children Under Ten Years of Age

Well it looks like any children under the age of 10 will have to have 2 swine flu shots instead of the single one previously thought. In children under 10 years of age the vaccine protects only 36% or lower however, they will be able to receive a second shot about 3 weeks after the first one and this should significantly increase the percentage of protection.

The good news is that the Swine flu vaccine appears to be working quite well in older children. Experts are reporting that the vaccine is at a protection percentage of about 76%. This is considered by many a very good amount of protection for a vaccine. It is expected that sometime in the near future children will be getting their swine flu vaccine at the same time as their seasonal flu vaccine.

Thankfully no serious side effects have occurred from the H1N1 vaccine and hopefully none will. The worst I want to get is a cold. I don't want to be experiencing some weird mutations from a vaccine shot... or do I? Well if I get super awesome powers like some of the X-Men like Wolverine then I'm fine, but if it's like some nuclear mutation where I grow another limb then maybe not so much. But thankfully the experts don't think that will happen. But wouldn't be kind of cool if it did?

H1N1 Vaccine Approved By United States Health Officials

For anyone that is fearful of contracting Swine Flu there is good news. United States health officials have approved the H1N1 vaccines and have said that there will be enough for everyone. Am I sold on the ideas that the vaccines works and there really will be enough for everyone? I'm not too sure.

The vaccine probably works mildly and does help prevent the contraction of Swine Flu, but I don't think it is the cure to stopping the spread of the virus. I mean even some of the best defenses can't stop everything. The Steelers can't stop all of the plays the Colts through at them, but they can sure stop most of them.

Now as for there being enough vaccines for all of America I'm not so sure there will be. However, at the same time I'm not sure there will need to be enough vaccines for all 300 million or so people in the United States. I don't think the government and drug manufacturers can supply that many people, but I doubt that everyone will want one, even though they will be free.

Either way the option of getting the vaccine is out there. Whether or not you actually go and get the vaccine is up to you.

American Conservatives Fight Against UNESCO Sex Education Guidelines

If someone proposed a possible plan that could significantly decrease the number of unwanted pregnancies and slow the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD's), then wouldn't you want to hear more? Well that is exactly what the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), is trying to do. They are attempting to establish new guidelines on sex education in schools. However, American Conservatives are trying to fight it (big surprise there) like the plague (or swine flu).

The goal of the new proposal is to scale back the 111 million new cases of STD's reported in those ages 10-24 each year. Also, this new plan could reduce the 4.4 million abortions sought by women ages 15-19 every year. Now this sounds like something Conservatives would promote, but apparently they don't see what's wrong with some of the youth in the country.

The U.S. Conservatives have begun to battle the new guidelines after seeing an online version of the UNESCO working document. The main issue Conservatives have spoken out against is the recommendation that teachers should introduce sex education to younger children. The new guidelines suggest that sex education start at the ages of 5-8, however it would be more of an introduction to sex ed. While this might seem too young, with the problem of teen pregnancies, and the high number of abortions (for all you pro-life people out there), I think it is time for a change.

American Conservatives insist that t he only "legitimate" way of avoiding pregnancy and STD's is abstinence. While yes, it is the safest and only 100% way of avoiding pregnancy and STD's not everyone will do it. In fact MOST people won't do it. Even the majority of religious people like Christians will NOT do it (Palin's daughter).

Furthermore, many conservative governments all over the world SUPPORT this idea. It is time for a change and that is what needs to happen, not what should happen.

Swine Flu Now a Pandemic

Welcome to the summer of the Swine Flu Pandemic. Just as schools close for the Summer Vacation, the World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared Swine Influenza as a pandemic, the highest level possible.

When the Swine flu first began to spread in Mexico many were wondering, how long it would take until the swine flu became a pandemic, not if the swine flu would become a pandemic. As the Swine Flu spread globally many people became infected, yet the severity of the flu was very mild. Though the death toll has not been great, the speed at which the virus spread was incredible. This led to much deliberation by the WHO, and the eventual declaration of a pandemic.

Many seem to think this is too drastic of a step, but let us not forget, "better safe than sorry." Even though the virus is not a relatively deadly threat at the moment, WHO Director-General, Dr. Margaret Chan says, "it is prudent to anticipate a bleaker outcome." Think about it this way, if the virus does mutate, which almost all the major pandemics have done (Spanish Influenza, approximately 50 million dead), then at least we will be better prepared to deal with the illness. Additionally if we begin producing vaccinations we may be able to prevent the virus from infecting millions by the time it does become a significant problem.

While many members of the general public seem to find such a relatively harmless virus reaching pandemic levels, many experts think it has not happened soon enough. Dr. Thomas Frieden, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says, "This is not a surprise, for all intents and purposes, the United States government has been in phase 6 of the pandemic for some time now."

Now I would love to see the Swine Flu pass by so we can later say, "Man remember that Pandemic back in '09, what a joke," but only time will reveal the answers to the future of the Swine Influenza Pandemic.

Is the Swine Flu Pandemic On the Way?

With the current situation presented before us, many have been questioning whether or not Swine Flu will reach the pandemic level. With the recent spread of the virus through Japan at an alarming rate it seems to be only a matter of time.

Swine Influenza has traveled to 40 different countries, infecting a confirmed 9830 people causing 79 fatalities. What more does this virus have to do before the World Health Organization (WHO) declares a pandemic?

WHO describes that the virus needs certain characteristics to be considered a pandemic. The virus must be entirely new or has not circulated recently and widely in the human population. This creates an almost universal vulnerability to infection. Additionally, there must be a significant number of people that fall ill at the same time or very close to the same time, causing great social and economical disruption, and creating a great amount of stress on health services. The virus must also be very contagious adding to the spread and severity of the virus. Swine Influenza meets all the criteria that are required, yet one thing appears to be keeping the virus from achieving pandemic status, the mortality rate.

With the exception of Mexico, the number of deaths compared to the number of confirmed cases is almost laughable. The virus has just appeared to be causing mild illness in most, with underlying health issues present in those that have died as a result from the illness. This may be the reason as to why Swine Influenza is not yet a pandemic, yet don't get too comfortable.

The Spanish Influenza of 1918, which killed an estimated 40-50 million people (some suggest the actual number was double this), became most deadly after the first wave of the flu. Because we humans are extremely vulnerable to the Swine Flu, precautionary measures are being taken to prepare for the possibility of a second, more deadly wave of Swine Influenza.

Doctors and common sense alike tell you to stay healthy and safe. Eat a balanced diet, get exercise, wash your hands, and if suggested by your doctor take flu medication to lower the risk of catching swine flu.

With Swine Flu Spreading Many Ask How to Stop It?

-- As the Swine Flu spreads many wonder, "How do we stop it?"

Swine Influenza (Swine Flu/H1N1) is a respiratory disease of pigs that is caused by type A influenza viruses. Much like the regular seasonal flu, Swine flu can be spread by human-to-human transmission, such as sneezing or coughing.

The Swine flu has created a panic in many, but with more than 100 schools and over 3000 confirmed cases in the United States alone, and close to 5300 globally, the panic is very reasonable. Though the effects of Swine flu in the U.S have been minuscule in comparison to that of the effects in Mexico, many have to ask what will happen if it gets worse?

During the four major pandemics since 1889, each has begun with a mild spring wave, only to be followed a few months later by a devastating second wave. The most notable of these four pandemics was the Spanish flu of 1918 that killed an estimated 40-50 million people, possibly more.

Experts do however, agree that if a second, more deadly and infectious wave of the virus is still to come, the time it takes for it to arrive will hopefully allow for the development and production of a vaccine to combat the virus. There are still preventative measures through medicine and Non-pharmaceutical interventions.

Oseltamivir, or by its brand name Tamiflu is 1 of 2 antiviral drugs approved for use in the United States, that the Swine Influenza has been susceptible to. Online pharmacies, sell Tamiflu, which has been high in demand since the outbreak of Swine Flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends Tamiflu in the treatment and/or prevention of infection with Swine Influenza viruses.

There are additional ways to aid in the prevention of the transmission of the Swine Influenza. Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education says, "Use the same common sense and courtesy that you would use during winter flu season: Wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough and stay home if you are sick." Duncan could not be more right in saying this, but there are still some more ways to prevent the Swine Influenza. Make sure to get enough sleep, every night, eat a healthy, nutritious diet, and be physically active.

Pediatrician and medical historian Dr. Howard Markel of the University of Michigan said that, "History is not predictive science... But what I have found, studying epidemics, is that good planning and good relationships between local state and federal authorities, goes a long way." The United States, and the rest of the world, can now only wait, while the whole of humanity will have to chip in to help each other and prepare for what may come in the days, weeks, or months to follow.

Swine Influenza Spreads to the U.S

The Swine influenza as many know has become a hot topic recently with the widespread presence of the virus. Mexico has been hit hardest by Swine Flu, causing many to become ill and some to succumb to the virus, resulting in death. However, it is not only Mexico that is now feeling the effects of the disease that may evolve into a full-scale pandemic. The Swine flu has begun to make itself felt on American soil. A new enemy for the superpower to battle, the Swine influenza has infected a reported 64 people in the United States, as of April 28, 2009.

President Obama has asked congress for $1.5 billion to help battle the current and potential cases of the virus by stockpiling different medicines such as, Tamiflu (oseltamivir) an antiviral drug, and the hiring of personnel. Federal officials have declared a National Public Health Emergency, and even California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has declared a state of emergency due to the outbreak of the virus. However, officials would like to remind everyone not to panic and this is not yet considered a "crisis response."

Currently, there have been 45 confirmed cases in New York, 10 in California, 6 in Texas, 2 in Kansas, and 1 in Ohio. Though a reported 149 people have been killed in Mexico due to the virus, none have died in the United States. However, it is advised that you should begin any preventative measures you are able to do. The first and most important thing to remember is something you may have heard your mother tell (or if you didn't listen, yell at) you, remember to always, always, always wash your hands. That does not mean just turn the tap on run you hands under water for a couple of seconds. Take the time to thoroughly and properly wash your hands, use soap and warm water if at all possible. Get some sleep, its good for your overall health and not to mention your mood, nobody wants to be around someone who's cranky. Exercise, get some physical education in, grab a bat and play some ball. Eat healthy. A balanced diet can help boost your body's immune system.
