Curious Cases - Fatal Familial Insomnia
Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) is a very rare condition that affects the brain causing the complete loss of sleep, and eventually death. The condition is caused by a gene mutation that can be passed down to the children of those that suffer from FFI. However, FFI has only been found in 50 families worldwide.
The condition was discovered in 1974, by Dr. Ignazio Roiter who investigated a family who had a history of deaths by insomnia. The condition affects the thalamus, the part of the brain that is responsible for regulating sleep. Initial symptoms of the condition include insomnia, but progress to much more severe symptoms over time.
Generally, the condition begins to present itself in those ages 30-60, but most commonly in those of 50 years of age. The condition takes between 7-36 months to result in death. FFI has 4 stages of development. The first stage incorporates increasing insomnia, panic attacks, paranoia, and phobias. During the second stage, hallucinations begin to manifest, and panic attacks become much more noticeable. By the third stage, sleep is impossible and rapid weight loss begins to occur. Finally, in the fourth stage dementia sets in, leaving the patient unresponsive or mute until the patient dies.
Unfortunately, there is no current treatment for FFI. Scientists have tried some methods of possible treatment, such as gene therapy, but the treatments have been unsuccessful so far. However, there has been some evidence that suggests treatments that focus on the symptoms can improve the quality of life for a short while.
I can't imagine how horrible it would be to slowly lose my ability to sleep and eventually die after months of agony and the very significant possibility of insanity. The worst part about this condition is the fact that there really isn't a whole lot anyone can do to help. Unfortunately because FFI is such a rare condition I have a feeling a cure won’t be available for quite some time, but here's hoping that someone finds out how to fix it.

5 Easy Ways to Boost Your Energy at Work
Most people that work in an office most of the day know that feeling of extreme fatigue that normally happens in the middle of the day. It's frustrating because when you're tired all you want to do is just lie down and take a nap. This makes you much more unproductive, and may actually cause you to dislike your job. However, there are ways that you can boost your energy when you're at work.
First of all, getting a good night's sleep is extremely important. Make sure you go to bed at a decent time, and get all the adequate sleep you need. You could sleep from 2am-10am, but you will probably feel better if you slept from 11pm-7am.
1. Take a Nap – If you're in an office that allows you to take a quick nap, then go ahead. Try sleeping for 15-20 minutes as this will help you refresh your brain and help boost your energy.
2. Move Around – If you sit most of the day, try standing up and moving around. Go and have a quick talk with a friend in the office, maybe do a couple of quick stretches, or just do a lap around the office. By moving, even just a little bit, you will increase your blood circulation, and those pains you get in your neck and back will feel better too.
3. Have a Snack – Bring a healthy, energy boosting snack to work every day. By eating foods that raise your blood-sugar level you will boost your energy. However, do be careful to eat the right kinds of food. Certain foods like potato chips and other junk foods do increase your blood-sugar level and energy, but only for a short period of time. After that energy is gone you are left with the burnt out feeling of a sugar crash.
Side Note- Drink lots of water throughout the day to make your energy levels stay balanced. The main reason for lack of energy is due to not enough water consumption throughout the day.
4. Deep Breathing – Deep breathing can help increase energy and boost stamina. Take a short break every so often to just stop everything and close your eyes and breathe. Diaphragmatic breathing, or belly breathing is an amazing way to re-focus yourself and boost your energy. You will also find you will have less stress. Make sure to breathe deeply and slowly to really benefit.
5. Natural Light – Try to expose yourself to natural light as much as you can. Don't use your desk lamp if you can open the windows and use the outside light. If you are in a part of the office where you can't get proper access to natural light take a break and take a walk outside. If you can't go outside at least walk over to a window and stay there for a bit.

Late Sleepers Productive Longer then Early Birds
A new study has shown that night owls (people not the birds) may have an advantage over those that are considered the early birds. First of all let me take a few seconds to enjoy this, as I myself am a night owl and would like to bask in the glory and true awesomeness of having some sort of advantage over those people that wake early and try to sieze the day. Well that felt pretty good to get that off my chest. Anyway where was I? Oh yes, awesomeness and how I along with my night owl bretheren possess it.
To carry on, a study was done where two groups of people had their brain waves monitored and reaction test taken two times during the day. The first group was the "early birds" most woke up at 7am, eww morning time with a single digit. And the second and obviously far superior group was the "night owls" who woke at around 11am.
Both groups received reaction tests and fMRI (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) 90 minutes after waking up and 10.5 hours after waking up. During the first tests at 90 minutes post-wake up both groups scored aboutu the same. However, at the 10.5 hours post-wake up tests the night owl group scored significantly better. The night owl group also showed that their brain waves were more active and could be more productive at later times unlike the early birds.
Although he early birds showed that they could recover from tiredness (sleep pressure) quicker than Night owls.

4 Easy Tips to Help you Sleep Better
Get into a routine - The best way to have a more fulfilling sleep is to set a regular sleep schedule for yourself. Avoid fighting against your biological clock by figuring out how many hours of sleep your body needs and then sticking to a schedule... even on weekends. Try to go to bed before midnight. Studies indicated that the hours you sleep before midnight are twice as important as the hours you sleep after midnight. Avoid caffeine - Caffeinated drinks, coffee, and tea, will keep your mind running longer than you think. Stay away from caffeinated drinks in the evening and before bed. Don't eat before bed - a light snack may be good before going to bed, but don't have full meals. Digestion takes a lot of energy and will keep you stimulated. If you are hungry before bed, try having a snack with a lot of carbohydrates that will trigger the serotonin hormone in the body making you feel sleepy. Exercise - Exercise is great for sleep and stress. People who exercise regularly are less likely to develop insomnia than those who don't. If you work out for as little as 20 minutes a day, you will feel more relaxed and stimulated. Try to exercise early in the day so you naturally become tired by the evening. Exercise induces the body to release melatonin which is a feel-good hormone that will make you feel more relaxed and content. 4 Reasons Why Sleep Is Important
1.Recharges Energy - Sleep is a very necessary part of life that all humans need. When we sleep our bodies have a chance to "recharge." Adequate sleep is needed in order to maintain the energy levels we need for daily activities. On average, adults need eight-nine hours of sleep, children need ten-twelve hours of sleep, and teenagers require about ten hours of sleep.
2.Boosts Immune System - Our body uses sleep to repair itself and build things like bone, muscle, and tissues. Although the body does this throughout the day when we are awake, during sleep the body does not need to divide its attention and instead is able to focus its entire attention on one task.
3.Sleep Deprivation Can Cause Mental Problems - Adequate sleep has shown increases in performance and concentration, but when the body does not receive the appropriate amount of sleep the outcomes can be extremely damaging. The body uses sleep as a time to unwind and cope with the stress we built up during the day. By depriving the body of sleep we allow ourselves to become prone to developing insomnia, depression, anxiety and many other illnesses. Additionally, when adequate sleep is not achieved proper hormone balance is not acquired, resulting in things like memory lapses, hallucinations, and mood and behavior problems.
4.Lack of Sleep Can Kill - Along with severe mental problems, sleep deprivation can turn deadly very quickly. According to the National Highway Safety Administration (NHSA), falling asleep while behind the wheel is responsible for at least 100,000 crashes, 71,000 injuries, and 1,550 deaths each year in the United States alone. Additionally, young people in their teens and twenties, who are particularly susceptible to the effects of chronic sleep loss are involved in greater than 1/2 of the "fall-asleep" crashes on American highways.
