How to stay healthy (and slim) over the Holidays

The Christmas season is famous for it's many parties, drinks, and belt-loosening dinners. Here are some ways that you can stay healthy and energized over the winter break.

Hydrogenated Fat - One way to avoid weight gain is to stay away from foods made with hydrogenated fat (like margarine) - it will make your bodies detox system slow and increase the amount of energy it requires for digestion.

Snack frequently - Every couple hours have a small healthy snack to stabilize your blood sugar. If you have regular blood sugar fluctuations your energy will be used more quickly, you are more susceptible to weight gain, and your immune system will weaken. Try having pre-prepared snacks like carrots and dip and crackers and cheese ready for when you start to get the munchies.

Eat more fruit - Heavy food can slow down your lymphatic system and make you feel more tired. Eat plenty of fruit to cleanse your lymphatic system and make you feel more energetic.

Eat healthy at home - when you aren't attending parties or dinners, have a healthy meal at home like a big leafy salad with nuts and fruit.

Exercise - It may be hard to find the time or location to do so, but it is important to exercise during the Holidays in order to maintain your stress and energy levels. 20 minutes of daily vigorous activity will get your blood flowing and keep your brain awake.

Plan Ahead - Many people feel stressed out during the holidays. This can hinder your mood and energy levels. If you plan your month ahead of time you will find that you won't feel rushed when Christmas day closes in, and therefore you will feel less stress. Try to make sure you do your Christmas shopping and gift wrapping early, and try to do any baking ahead of time so that when the time comes, you aren't rushing to get everything done.

Drink Water - During parties and dinners, be sure to drink plenty of water in order to prevent dehydration and help your body systems function properly.

Take it easy - Don't over do yourself at the snack table. Eat in small amounts and go easy on the sugar - of course you are allowed to treat yourself every now and then.

Get lots of sleep - We tend to feel more sleepy during the winter months. Its important to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night to feel your best. To avoid burning out - take a nap when you begin to feel drowsy. This will ensure that you have enough energy for upcoming parties and evening events!

Take your Vitamins - Vitamins B and C are both reduced by alcohol and stress. To make sure that you are getting the vitamins and minerals you need, take vitamin B-Complex and vitamin C or a multivitamin. Enough vitamin B in the body helps reduce symptoms of stress.

Important Questions to ask your Doctor Before Taking a Prescription Drug

When you are prescribed a drug by your doctor, make sure you ask them the right questions in order to see if the drug is necessary to treat your condition. Sometimes drugs can be a simple alternative to a difficult natural therapy, however the prices of prescription drugs can burn a hole in your pocket, and may not be the best therapy for your body.

1. Is drug therapy really needed to treat this problem?

There are many problems that do not need to be treated with prescription drugs. Things like premenstrual pain, and anxiety or depression after bereavement can sometimes be treated without prescription drugs. Over-the-counter (OTC) and balanced exercise, diet, and lifestyle can sometimes treat your condition. Sometimes the proper remedy is spending therapeutic time with family and loved ones. A recent study found that people who suffer from major depression can be helped by facing up to and solving their problems instead of hiding behind antidepressants. Make sure your doctor is certain in recommending the use of prescription medication to prevent your condition from worsening.

2. When did this drug first come on the market?

Recently approved drugs are causing more and more problems for users. Newer drugs tend to come with more side effects and a higher price tag due to drug company marketing. If you are taken off an older drug that you are used to, and put onto a newer drug, be careful. Your doctor may be testing the new drug's effectiveness on you.

3. What kinds of substances or activities should I avoid when taking this drug?

It's important to find out as much as you can about a drug before taking it. Sometimes doing everyday things like driving a car or having a glass of wine may not be safe when you are using medication. It is also very important that you ask your doctor if other drugs, prescription or OTC, will react with the drug being prescribed to you. Always tell your doctor about any prescription or non-prescription drugs that you use before taking another drug.

4. What will happen if I don't take this drug?

To become aware of all possible outcomes, ask your doctor if your condition will worsen over time if you don't take the drug.

5. Is there a Generic drug that will help me?

Generic drugs tend to be less expensive than brand name drugs. Ask your doctor for the generic brand.

5 Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate

You've probably already heard of chocolate improving the mood, but there are more health benefits to chocolate that you may be unaware of. Before you go raiding the candy jar, keep in mind that these health benefits pertain to DARK CHOCOLATE only. That is anything with a cocoa content over 65%. Milk chocolate is probably what you are used to, but if you are interested in eating healthy it might be a good idea to give dark chocolate a try.

1. Good for the Heart - Due to the presence of antioxidants in dark chocolate, studies have found that in individuals with high blood pressure, a stick of dark chocolate a day can lower blood pressure levels. In addition, dark chocolate has been known to lower cholesterol levels by up to 10%.

2. Improves Mood - Dark chocolate stimulates endorphin production which in turn provides the brain with feelings of pleasure. A substance called theobromine which provides you with caffeine-like stimulation is also present in dark chocolate. Dark chocolate contains serotonin which is known to act as an anti-depressant.

3. Low fat - Unlike milk chocolate or white chocolate, dark chocolate contains very little fat that will affect your cholesterol. Of the small amount of fat in dark chocolate, 1/3 of the fats are actually good fats which are healthy for the body. The remaining 2/3rds are made up of a neutral fat, and a saturated fat.

4. Stress Reducer - A study found that eating an ounce of dark chocolate a day for two weeks drastically reduced stress levels in the bodies of people who were feeling highly stressed.

5. Stabilizer - Not only does dark chocolate regulate and stabilize the mood, but it's also been found to help regulate the body's metabolism

5 ways to Break the Fast Food Habit

Many of us eat fast food regularly due to it's availability and convenience. Even though you know it's not the best thing to be putting in your body, the addicting tastes and affordable prices are enough to keep you coming back for more. However, Eating large amounts of fast food will eventually cause your body harm. Fast food does not contain the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs to get out of a meal. Problems with cholesterol and obesity could occur in those who eat fast food regularly. Here are some tips to help you break your fast food habit.

1. Plan ahead - For the most part, we tend to opt for fast food when we are in a hurry and need a quick meal. If you plan ahead you not have to stop at McDonalds on the way home from work for dinner. Always have an idea about what you are going to have for breakfast, lunch, and dinner before you start the day.

2. Pack Snacks - If you carry healthy snacks with you when you go out, they will hold you off until it is time to have a meal. Pack things like trail mix, carrots and dip, or crackers and cheese. This way you will not be tempted to grab a small bite of greasy food.

3. Try once a month cooking - There are recipes online and in books that teach you how to cook enough meals to freeze so that they can be re-heated if you need a quick dinner solution.

4. Healthy Restaurants - find out if there are any healthy restaurants or cafes in your area and try eating there instead of fast food joints when you need a quick meal.

5. Reward yourself - If you are successful in cutting back on fast food, its okay to reward yourself every now and then. Having fast food a few times a month will satisfy your fast food cravings, but won't bring you back into the habit!

Which Candles are safe?

With the cold weather dark weather creeping in, its nice to light the house with candles. The scents and flickering lights are somewhat relaxing. Recently, however, there has been talk about candle fumes being unsafe. Most candles are made from oil which is bleached and mixed with dangerous toxins that are harmful to inhale. These candles are called Paraffin candles, and burning them will put toxins and carcinogens (cancer causing substances) into the air you breath. The EPA has recently confirmed that Paraffin candles contain some dangerous chemicals in large quantities that include carcinogens, neurotoxins, and reproductive toxins.

Which candles are safe to burn in the home?

A study presented at the American Chemical Society's meeting in Washington D.C by R. Massoudi and Amid Hamidi found that the more expensive candles made from beeswax or soy are safer because they do not release harmful chemicals. Lighting one Paraffin candle occasionally will not harm you - but continuous use of paraffin candles for many years may increase the carcinogens that you consume.

It's worth it to spend more money on Soy or Beeswax candles. They are safer for the environment and to those living in your home. In fact, soy candles have many benefits - the first being that they are not harmful to your health! Soy candles have the capability of lasting up to 50% longer than Paraffin candles, they are not made of foreign oil, they do not contain animal fats, and they are derived from a renewable resource. If you want to live healthy, try switching from Paraffin to Soy!

5 Cures for 5 Common Ailments

Acne

Most dermatologists say that acne is "un-curable", however, there are things you can do to drastically reduce the appearance of your breakouts. Try using Face Doctor Soap twice a day as an alternative to Proactive and Phisoderm products. It is a medicated soap that also contains herbal ingredients to keep your skin free of oil and pimples.

Stress

Stress is a big one for most of us. If relaxation techniques don't work for you, try eating a more healthy and balanced diet. Regular exercise will also release chemicals in your body that will make you feel more relaxed and content. Try taking multivitamins to ensure you are getting all of the vitamins and minerals you need.

Headaches

Headaches can be caused by a number of things - stress, dehydration, or for coffee addicts, a lack of caffeine. Try having a glass of cold water and sitting or lying down. If that doesn't do the trick, take a couple of Tylenol's, Advil's, or another form of Ibuprophen.

Cold sores

Believe it or not, if you suffer from cold sores, you've picked up the contagious ailment for life. The most successful treatment for cold sores is a medicated lip ointment like Abreva or another topical lip analgesic.

Fatigue

Many people experience fatigue during the day when they are having dietary insufficiencies. It's important for many young men and women to get the iron they need in order to prevent anemia by eating foods high in iron like beef, spinach, and nuts. There are also iron supplements available to ensure you are getting the correct amount of iron your body needs.
