5 Quick Pick-me-ups
Bananas - These are serious mood boosters due to their mix of vitamins A, B6, and C; fibre, tryptophan, potassium, phosphorous, iron, protein, and good carbohydrates. The natural sugars in a banana will give you a quick boost of energy while the fibre will help you sustain that energy. This will prevent a drop in your energy and mood and high blood sugar levels. Vitamin B6 helps the brain convert tryptophan into serotonin, the mood boosting hormone. If you're feeling down and need a snack have a banana.
Body posture - Have you ever noticed that you have a perkier step when you are happy? Happy people walk fast, stand tall and are full of life and energy. Take notice of the way you carry yourself. Try not to shuffle your feet, walk slowly and slouch - this will make you appear lifeless and pessimistic. If your feeling sluggish, taking big steps, standing tall, and walking faster will help you look and feel optimistic and energetic. Sleep - By getting less sleep than we need (for example - 6 hours instead of 7), our brains tend to lean towards negative thoughts instead of positive ones. An article in the Journal of American Medical Association found that even one night of insufficient sleep can negatively affect our mood. Even though its not easy to get those extra couple hours of sleep, your mood depends on it. Shut off the computers and televisions and get the sleep your brain needs. Sunlight - getting fresh air and exercise is the best way to boost your mood and your energy. The natural combination on a regular basis will work every time to pick you up. Take long deep breaths as you go on a brisk walk and reap the mood-lifting benefits of exercise. Remember to wear sunscreen when spending long periods of time outside in order to protect against sun damage. Walnuts - These contain a lot of healthy components that help improve your mood. Walnuts have omega-3s, vitamin B6, tryptophan, protien, and folate. Omega-3s have health benefits including cancer preventing and acne preventing benefits, and have been linked with better moods and lower depression rates. A study by Harvard Medical School found that omega-3s and uridine (another component found in walnuts) worked in the same way as antidepressant medications. The average dose of omega-3 oils is 1,000 mg per day. You can get the same amount in half an ounce of walnuts. 6 Healthy things that Aren't so Healthy
If you're an avid blog reader, then you may be getting tired of blogs telling you what you should and shouldn't do (eat this not that, whatever you do don't do this) - and sometimes these facts seem to contradict other facts you've heard. There are some things that seem healthy enough but may actually do you more harm than good. Be sure to take note of these "healthy habit faux-pas" to protect your body from ailments and keep you in optimal health! 1. Staying in the Sun - you have probably heard that it is healthy to spend 30 minutes in the sun everyday.. well this is only half true. Yes, our bodies need vitamin D to stay strong and fight off illness by improving our immune systems, but too much time in the sun is damaging to your skin. The general rule is if you are going to spend more than 20 minutes in the sun, use SPF 30 all over your body, especially your face where the skin is more susceptible to burns. 2. Religiously using Hand Sanitizer - Ever since the Swine Flu scare, hand sanitizer sales have sky rocketed. Thanks to my former science teacher, I conducted an experiment that proved that hand sanitizer is more likely to get you sick in the long run. The "sanitizing" doesn't just kill viruses and bad bacteria (there is actually way more good bacteria than bad bacteria on earth to begin with), but they also kill the good bacteria on your hands that do all of the fighting against viruses. So even if you feel content and clean after sanitizing your hands, they won't stay that way for long - in fact, they'll become worse and your good bacteria count will be compromised. Plain old soap and water should do it. 3. Exercising... a lot - Even though they say that you should get some form of moderate exercise every day, your body and mind do not need more than three or four days of cardiovascular activity (30-45 minutes per session) a week. These exercises should be done every other day alternating with more mild forms of exercise like Yoga, Pilates, walking, and weight training. The best way to stay toned and energized is to vary your exercise regime and take it easy on your body. 4. Over/Under Sleeping - If you are regularly sleeping for more than 9 hours a night, its not good. It's also not good if you are sleeping less than 7 hours a night. We need 8 full hours of sleep per night in order to function at our best. We aren't built to think or process at an optimal level on more than 9 or less than 7 hours of sleep. Too much or too little sleep is bad for your skin, it causes bloating, overeating, confusion, and sometimes depression.5. Air Conditioning - AC is great, but if you rely on it day and night it is doing you harm. The recycled air can contain bad bacteria, air-born viruses and germs that will in turn give you a cold or flu. If you suffer from allergies the air conditioning can emit particles of dust that can irritate your allergies. Every couple hours, try to turn off the air conditioning and open the windows or go for a walk. Wash your air conditioning filter with warm soapy water and let them air dry once a month. If you work at an office go for a lunch or afternoon break outside in the sun. 6. Buying Organic Food - Organic foods have earned the reputation that they are not processed and more healthy than regular foods. The fact is is that they are more expensive, and may still be heavily processed. Read the labels carefully when you are buying from a health foods store. Organic doesn't mean healthy. Choose simple items with few ingredients and a low amount of natural sugars, salts, and processed carbohydrates. Important Questions to ask your Doctor Before Taking a Prescription Drug
When you are prescribed a drug by your doctor, make sure you ask them the right questions in order to see if the drug is necessary to treat your condition. Sometimes drugs can be a simple alternative to a difficult natural therapy, however the prices of prescription drugs can burn a hole in your pocket, and may not be the best therapy for your body. 1. Is drug therapy really needed to treat this problem? There are many problems that do not need to be treated with prescription drugs. Things like premenstrual pain, and anxiety or depression after bereavement can sometimes be treated without prescription drugs. Over-the-counter (OTC) and balanced exercise, diet, and lifestyle can sometimes treat your condition. Sometimes the proper remedy is spending therapeutic time with family and loved ones. A recent study found that people who suffer from major depression can be helped by facing up to and solving their problems instead of hiding behind antidepressants. Make sure your doctor is certain in recommending the use of prescription medication to prevent your condition from worsening. 2. When did this drug first come on the market?Recently approved drugs are causing more and more problems for users. Newer drugs tend to come with more side effects and a higher price tag due to drug company marketing. If you are taken off an older drug that you are used to, and put onto a newer drug, be careful. Your doctor may be testing the new drug's effectiveness on you. 3. What kinds of substances or activities should I avoid when taking this drug? It's important to find out as much as you can about a drug before taking it. Sometimes doing everyday things like driving a car or having a glass of wine may not be safe when you are using medication. It is also very important that you ask your doctor if other drugs, prescription or OTC, will react with the drug being prescribed to you. Always tell your doctor about any prescription or non-prescription drugs that you use before taking another drug. 4. What will happen if I don't take this drug?To become aware of all possible outcomes, ask your doctor if your condition will worsen over time if you don't take the drug. 5. Is there a Generic drug that will help me?Generic drugs tend to be less expensive than brand name drugs. Ask your doctor for the generic brand. 5 Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate
You've probably already heard of chocolate improving the mood, but there are more health benefits to chocolate that you may be unaware of. Before you go raiding the candy jar, keep in mind that these health benefits pertain to DARK CHOCOLATE only. That is anything with a cocoa content over 65%. Milk chocolate is probably what you are used to, but if you are interested in eating healthy it might be a good idea to give dark chocolate a try. 1. Good for the Heart - Due to the presence of antioxidants in dark chocolate, studies have found that in individuals with high blood pressure, a stick of dark chocolate a day can lower blood pressure levels. In addition, dark chocolate has been known to lower cholesterol levels by up to 10%. 2. Improves Mood - Dark chocolate stimulates endorphin production which in turn provides the brain with feelings of pleasure. A substance called theobromine which provides you with caffeine-like stimulation is also present in dark chocolate. Dark chocolate contains serotonin which is known to act as an anti-depressant. 3. Low fat - Unlike milk chocolate or white chocolate, dark chocolate contains very little fat that will affect your cholesterol. Of the small amount of fat in dark chocolate, 1/3 of the fats are actually good fats which are healthy for the body. The remaining 2/3rds are made up of a neutral fat, and a saturated fat. 4. Stress Reducer - A study found that eating an ounce of dark chocolate a day for two weeks drastically reduced stress levels in the bodies of people who were feeling highly stressed. 5. Stabilizer - Not only does dark chocolate regulate and stabilize the mood, but it's also been found to help regulate the body's metabolism DoctorSolve Healthcare Solutions Inc., a Canadian Internet-based pharmacy intermediary (license #BC X23), offers low cost, long-term prescription drugs. Mortality Rate From Unintended Injury Rises. Americans Are Poisoning Themselves To Death
Would you be surprised if I told you that in a span of about 6 years (1999-2005) the mortality rate from unintended injury rose by 11% in the United States? Well you should be. Those numbers are almost too high to believe, but the statistics are completely true.
The truth of the matter is we're slowly killing ourselves. There have been unusually high spikes in poisoning deaths and deaths from falls. The deaths from falling may be just due to older age or simply because someone had a few too many drinks and accidentally fell off a cliff. However, the fact that poisoning deaths increased in dramatic fashion is what really scares me. America, you've become one big drug addict.
I'm not saying that drugs (prescription drugs) are bad, many people rely on some of these medications to live. However, when you start taking pills for sleeping, upset stomachs, muscle pain, sneezing, that weird twitch in your eye, etc, it starts to add up. Over medicating is a very real problem in America that often goes overlooked.
When anyone starts taking more drugs than they can remember, there is definitely going to be problems. There is only so much your body can take. It's kind of like alcohol, sure a drink every so often is okay, but when you go get totally smashed every night for a lengthy period of time then expect there to be some sort of damage to your body. People begin to think that if something isn't illegal it won't harm you and that's where many people are wrong.
My grade 11 teacher told me that North American society is the most medicated society in the world. He couldn't have been more right. It seems to me that people are just taking pills because they can. If your having trouble sleeping try working out, putting some soft music on don't pop a pill. America you need some serious rehab. Hopefully the citizens will listen up and give you what you need.

4 Reasons Why Sleep Is Important
1.Recharges Energy - Sleep is a very necessary part of life that all humans need. When we sleep our bodies have a chance to "recharge." Adequate sleep is needed in order to maintain the energy levels we need for daily activities. On average, adults need eight-nine hours of sleep, children need ten-twelve hours of sleep, and teenagers require about ten hours of sleep.
2.Boosts Immune System - Our body uses sleep to repair itself and build things like bone, muscle, and tissues. Although the body does this throughout the day when we are awake, during sleep the body does not need to divide its attention and instead is able to focus its entire attention on one task.
3.Sleep Deprivation Can Cause Mental Problems - Adequate sleep has shown increases in performance and concentration, but when the body does not receive the appropriate amount of sleep the outcomes can be extremely damaging. The body uses sleep as a time to unwind and cope with the stress we built up during the day. By depriving the body of sleep we allow ourselves to become prone to developing insomnia, depression, anxiety and many other illnesses. Additionally, when adequate sleep is not achieved proper hormone balance is not acquired, resulting in things like memory lapses, hallucinations, and mood and behavior problems.
4.Lack of Sleep Can Kill - Along with severe mental problems, sleep deprivation can turn deadly very quickly. According to the National Highway Safety Administration (NHSA), falling asleep while behind the wheel is responsible for at least 100,000 crashes, 71,000 injuries, and 1,550 deaths each year in the United States alone. Additionally, young people in their teens and twenties, who are particularly susceptible to the effects of chronic sleep loss are involved in greater than 1/2 of the "fall-asleep" crashes on American highways.

Teenage Depression Plagues U.S
"As many as 20% of adolescents experience one episode of clinical depression by age 18, and teens who have had one depressive episode are more likely to have a subsequent episode, according to Judy Garber, the first author on the study." - Excerpt from the Wall Street Journal Health Blog When 20% of any group of people is depressed, you know something is very wrong. The horrific thing about this is that the stat is among adolescents, many who have not experienced the stress of marriage and long term commitment, working full time, and losing a job. What makes adolescents vulnerable then? I would have to say the most likely and logical reasoning for depression amongst teens is the changes they are facing during those "awkward years." Anyone old enough to call themselves a man or woman knows what I am talking about. The occurrence of puberty and the challenges of high school life make a lethal combination. Not only do teens begin to experience a change, physically, mentally, and emotionally, but they have to do this while they try and fit in at school and get good grades. Many teens worry about fitting in, and having an active social life, but many people can be harsh and cruel, bullying kids, leading to low self-confidence. This, in teens has a devastating effect. Teenagers already have self doubts and low self-esteem because of pimples, greasy hair, and never thinking there is a world outside of high school if one is rejected by their peers, it seems like a death sentence. Teens, I ask you to not take any sort of rejection too seriously. You are not going to fit in everywhere, with everyone, but there will be some people that will accept you. Always remember that there is a world and life outside of, and after high school, in fact after you graduate you probably won't see most of the people from your high school. Don't judge others before giving them a chance. Don't bully anyone, it's not nice and it's why there are so many teens depressed. Don't do drugs. I know teens hear this a lot, but not only are drugs unhealthy for your body, but drugs like marijuana are actually depressants, so while you feel good for a little bit of time you are causing more grief than happiness in the end.
