6 Health Signs That Shouldn't Be Ignored
Last winter, actress Natasha Richardson was admitted after complaining of a headache. Earlier that day she was skiing on a beginner hill and took a fall without wearing a helmet. She claimed she felt fine and joked about the fall with her ski instructor, and carried on with her day. An ambulance that could have saved her life was turned away. Richardson said she felt fine and didn't think anything of the head trauma, ignoring a dangerous health sign that caused her death. Seemingly mild symptoms can be more dangerous that we think - so a little knowledge about health signs could one day save your life. 1. Splitting headaches - We all get headaches every now and then, but if you ever experience a headache more painful than any other headache you've had before, make sure you go to the doctor. It could be a sinus headache if you have a cold, but it could also be a brain tumor or a hemorrhage. If you aren't completely sure what causes the pain, have it checked out. Painful headaches are also a symptom of brain bleeding and could be signs of an aneurysm. If you also are unable to move your neck, you may have meningitis and require immediate antibiotics to prevent damage. 2. Pins and needles sensation in the feet or legs - Nearly 24 million Americans have diabetes, and 1/4 of those are not diagnosed. High blood sugar levels could damage your nervous system (causing pins and needles) and resulting in diabetes and deadly complications if not diagnosed. This is the first sign of diabetes for many people. 3. Stomach pain - If you have intense pain in your stomach and still have your appendix, head to the ER right away. An appendix could rupture within 48 to 72 hours after symptoms start. A ruptured appendix can cause an infection that can be life-threatening. 4. Calf pain - A blood clot that occurs deep down in the calf vein is called thrombosis. Affecting 2 million Americans a year, deep vein thrombosis can be life-threatening. A piece of the clot can break loose and cause a clot in the lungs. Cancer, obesity, immobility due to bed rest or long-distance travel, pregnancy, and advanced age are risk factors. 5. Chest pain - Chest pain is the most important health symptom that shouldn't be ignored. Discomfort in the chest (such as pressure) is the first sign of a heart attack. Don't wait for the feeling of pain before you call a doctor - if it feels like an elephant is sitting on your chest, have someone call 911 immediately. 6. Shortness of breath - If you feel short of breath after running after the bus or taking the stairs, its nothing to be worried about. If you are experiencing shortness of breath while sitting down, however, it is a sign of heart failure. It could also be asthma, anxiety, or a blood clot in the lungs. Eat Your Brussel Sprouts
At Christmas time, or Thanksgiving, practically whenever you can get your family together, brussel sprouts are a delicacy. Like escargot, people either love or hate brussel sprouts. Cruciferous vegetables, including brussel sprouts, and cabbage, are jam packed with healthiness. Here is why you should pile up those brussel sprouts on your plate whenever you have a chance.
1. Cancer – Consuming brussel sprouts frequently can lessen your chance of contracting lung, colon, breast, bladder and ovarian cancer. A recent study looking at over 700 people showed those who ate cruciferous veggies had risks 29 percent lower of getting bladder cancer than those eating very few cruciferous vegetables.
2. Sulforaphane Stops Cancers- Brussel sprouts contain sulforaphane, which lowers liver cells’ emission of the cholesterol transporter. (This also is attributed to clearing substances which may cause potential cancers.
3. Protect Your DNA – Another study conducted on 10 men showed that the 5 men who ate brussel sprouts daily had 28% less DNA damage. This also can be related to cancer as mutations in DNA may allow cancer cells to develop.

4. Let Brussel Sprouts Beautify You – Brussel sprouts contain high amounts of vitamin C. This manufactures collagen, which is the protein that gives good skin structure (lack of collagen means earlier wrinkles, and visible at a younger age, you will have flexible skin). A study conducted in England proved that those with high levels of vitamin C had 50 % less risk of dying from heart disease, stroke, or cancer. Also Brussel sprouts contain huge amounts of vitamin A and beta-carotene which encourage beautiful even skin tones.
5. Brussels Prevent Birth Defects – Folic acid is vital for perfect cell division as it is necessary in DNA synthesis. Folic acid deficiency has been associated with numerous birth defects, like spina bifida. Folic acid is the most common vitamin deficiency in the world. One cup of brussel sprouts contains 93.6 mg of folic acid so eat up!
Although brussel sprouts may taste disgusting to you, they are filled with essential nutrients your body needs. Adding mustard to brussel sprouts may alter their flavor as well as garlic, balsamic vinegar and lemon juice are good to flavor brussel sprouts.

7 Ways to Prevent Cancer
There are many simple lifestyle changes you can make in order to prevent cancer. Following these tips will put you on the path towards better health and hopefully a cancer-free future. 1. Don't smoke - You've probably been warned of this many times before, but whoever was warning you had a valid reason to. Smoking is the highest cancer risk factor that we can control. Smoking is responsible for lung cancer, and many other types of cancer. The best way to prevent cancer is to never start - or quit if you already smoke. Secondhand smoke is also a significant cancer risk factor. The smoke contains more than 60 carcinogens which disturb natural cell development and can trigger the development of cancer cells. 2. Be sun safe - It is important to try to get 15 minutes of sunlight on your skin each day. Researchers have found that getting too little sunlight can be a cause of numerous cancers such as breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, and stomach cancer. In addition, a lack of vitamin D can cause osteoporosis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and high blood pressure. Be careful not to get too much sun though. Over one million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer each year. In order to prevent skin cancer, avoid UV ray over-exposure by wearing sunscreen when outside, avoiding the hot mid day sun, and staying away from tanning beds. If you want to be safe, yet still get the vitamin D you need, get vitamin D supplements. 3. Drink more water! - Stop for a glass of water whenever you can. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1996 found that men who drank 6 full glasses of water every day reduced their risk of contracting bladder cancer by half. Another study found that women who drank a lot of water reduced their risk of developing colon cancer by up to 45%. 4. Drink Green tea - Ancient cultures have always believed that the benefits of green tea are superfluous - it's no wonder that new research shows that green tea protects against numerous cancers, as well as heart disease. Some scientists believe that a certain chemical in green tea is one of the most powerful anticancer agents ever discovered! 5. Eat more fish - Researchers found that people who ate four or more servings of fish each week were 1/3rd less likely to develop blood cancers such as leukemia, myeloma, and non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The omega 3 acids in fish are said to reduce a woman's risk of developing endometrial cancer. 6. Eat your veggies - a proper diet (and regular exercise) will ensure that you get your essential vitamins and nutrients and keep you healthy. Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants which help damaged cells, and many important vitamins which make you healthy. Many studies suggest that reaching ideal levels of vitamins and minerals in the body can improve the immune system and prevent a variety of cancers and illnesses. If you're a picky eater, take a multivitamin every morning. 7. Wet your Whistle... in moderation - Beer protects the body against a bacteria which is known to cause ulcers and can be linked to stomach cancer. Easy on the drinks though, more than one or two alcohol beverages a day can actually increase your risk of developing mouth, throat, esophageal, liver, and breast cancer. Cell phone Radiation: Tumors
Cell phones have recently been considered as the biggest public health issue since tobacco. Science research has uncovered the risks of cell phone use. They have been suspicious that radiation from cell phones and other wireless devices can cause brain tumors, harm blood cells, and even damage DNA. A major study by Dr. David Carpenter showed that people who use cell phones double their risk of developing brain cancer and acoustic neuromas. Those who start using a cell phone before the age of 20 were more than five times as likely to develop brain cancer. When you use a cell phone, 70% of the energy (including radiation waves) from the phone is transmitted and absorbed into your head. This may alter the natural electrical activity in the brain for up to an hour after cell use. Children are at the highest risk of radiation. A child's brain is not fully developed, and their skull thickness is on average 1 1/2 mm thinner than an adults. This means that the electromagnetic radiation (EMR) is more dangerous to a child because the EMR absorption rate is higher. Bluetooth and other hands-free headsets are just as bad. These devices require more energy and have higher EMR. A new product called Blue Tube Headset was made specifically to minimize EMR. It's designed to keep EMR emitting devices as far away from your head as possible, while minimizing the radiation emitted through the device. To minimize EMR, try to reduce your cell phone/ iPhone use, use a land line when possible, turn your cell phone off when it's not in use, keep you cell phone away from your body, and use safe headset technology! Building Personal Exercise Habits for Life
As most of us know exercising is a crucial part of staying healthy, along with eating a healthy diet. However, variety is key in both cases. You might love potatoes, but if you have those same type of potatoes every night they start to get boring and you don't want them anymore. The same is true for exercise. If you don't vary your routine then you can become bored and just give up. Also, by staying to a fixed routine your muscles become used to doing the same thing over and over again, much like muscle memory.
The idea of switching your routine is used very frequently with many successful workout tapes and guides. If you can't think of one of the top of your head just remember P90X. The same concept is used in P90X, they call it muscle confusion. It focuses on varying the routine so your muscles don't adjust to one routine. This way your muscles are challenged and you can actually work more efficiently.
Also, something to remember is that you shouldn't focus on the same muscle groups everyday. Try to switch up your workout so you give specific muscle groups 2 days to rest. For example if you worked out your arms and back one day do your core the next day. Then the day after your core work your legs. This lets your muscle groups rest and repair.
Well if you're sitting there not knowing what you can do to vary up your routine don't worry. There are different types of exercises you can do. If you love running, that's great, but try to do some strength training as well.
Aerobic exercise can feature a vast number of exercises. Jogging for example is an aerobic exercise. The main goal of aerobics is to get your heart to really start working. By doing this the amount of oxygen in your blood will improve. Also exercise has been known to release things like endorphins which are your bodies natural painkillers. Additionally, your immune system should receive a boost and your blood will pump much more efficiently. Also, you will begin to see an increase in your overall stamina.
Interval training has been proven to condition your heart and burn fat more efficiently then just jogging or walking. Try some sprints with gentle recovery periods. You will notice you will be saving more time by doing interval training, but still see results. Interval training is also a great way to really improve your cardiovascular fitness and fat-burning abilities.
Next is my personal favorite type of training, strength training. Make sure you include some sort of strength training into your normal exercise program. The goal is to really exhaust your muscles. Right to the point when you can feel your muscles screaming to stop, but you've just got to pump out one more rep. Don't hurt yourself doing this though, waiting for injuries to heal isn't fun.
Finally, we move onto core exercises. These are probably my worst area of fitness. I personally have never liked core exercises, but that probably has something to do with the fact that I've never really had good core muscles. However, core muscles are probably some of the most important muscles to work. They provide the building blocks for movement and help protect parts of your body. Also, building core muscles can help increase your balance and stability, for all you sports fans or the extra clumsy.
Exercising regularly is key to keeping one healthy. Many people don't remember that and I think that's why they don't get motivated. If you want to have abs then go workout. It won't just magically happen overnight. You need to be determined, you need to want it, you need to stay focused. Working out isn't easy, but it definitely can be fun. Try to enjoy yourself. Find someone to go to the gym with. This might help keep you going back to the gym and staying on track.
If you're still not convinced how about these reasons why exercise can improve your health.
1. Lower your blood pressure 2. Helps prevent and fight off colds 3. Manage arthritis 4. Lower your risk of heart disease 5. Helps cure insomnia 6. Fight depression 7. Lower your risk of diabetes and reverse pre-diabetes 8. Build strong bones 9. Lose weight 10. Reduces your risk of cancer 11. Helps you think better 12. Helps relieve chronic knee pain 13. Increases your energy levels 14. Slow down your aging process

Teens Smoking Contraband Cigarettes
A recent study has shown that a fairly large part of teens that smoke regularly smoke contraband cigarettes. The study was probably meant to get people to tighten the manufacturing and sales of cigarettes because, "Oh no! The kids are smoking them." The problem is, if these kids are smoking regularly already, stopping the production of contraband cigarettes will not stop that. Teens find a way to do almost anything. This smells like more of a cash grab.
It seems that someone making a huge profit from the sales of the cigarettes is being hurt financially by the increasing sale of cigarettes. Here's the problem. Taxes on cigarettes are huge, most of the cost of buying smokes is actually more likely to be for the taxes. So when illegal cigarettes are being manufactured and then sold for, what I think must be a much lower price, why buy legal smokes? I don't smoke, but I also don't think the taxes on cigarettes should be so high that they cost the consumer more than the actual cigarette. That really isn't fair to the consumer.
Honestly, the smoking will come back and cost the consumer something in the end. Most consumers know this, so as long as they have this knowledge, why stop them from killing themselves?

Breast Cancer Breakthrough
A huge breakthrough has been made in cancer research. Researches have discovered that a compound called salinomycin killed 100 times more cancer cells than the standard chemotherapy drug. The study was tested on mice by a team from Boston. Many other experts are hopeful that similar types of treatments could be used to combat other diseases as well.
The findings could essentially pave the wave for a treatment that can target the cancer stem cells without harming other body cells. The reason to target cancer stem cells is because it is widely believed that cancer stem cells are the reason why cancer is able to come back even after successful treatments to clear tumors.
Obviously this is a tremendous breakthrough for the entire world. Imagine the possibility that we could develop an anti-cancer drug that would target the cancer, destroy all the stem cells to prevent it from coming back and all this without harming any other body cells. Every year there are around 45,000 women and 300 men diagnosed with breast cancer in Britain alone. Imagine all the live we could save with this sort of information.
Although it will take a few years for researchers to make sure this is safe in humans the potential is definitely there. This could be that first step towards finding a cure for cancer, soon to be the number 1 cause for death.

Are Men Good For Women's Diets?
Depending on the way you look at it, men could be good for women's diets. A study that was conducted at a University's cafeteria's showed that when women ate with a mixed group they tend to eat less calories. The more men that were present seemed to further decrease the calorie intake of the women.
The only problem with this I see is if women start to starve themselves by not eating enough. Most women think that if they eat less in front of guys then they will appear to be more attractive, but guess what, if you don't eat enough and change into a cross between Lindsay Lohan and a skeleton (oh wait, maybe they're the same thing), then guys probably won't find you very attractive anyway.
If eating with men helps you eat healthier then go ahead and eat with guys more often, more power to you. Remember eating healthier and eating less are two completely different things. As long as you continue to eat a sufficient amount of food and stay healthier then yes, men can be good for women's diets. However, I don't think every article that talks about this should be titled "Men ARE good for women's diets" and should be "Men CAN be good for women's diets."
Furthermore, I think one other things should be taken into consideration, do men even care? For the most part, probably not. I mean if you eat like a pig, with no courtesy eating a full rack of ribs in record breaking time, then yeah maybe men care. But if you tend to eat like a civilized human being, taking some sort of time to eat then it probably doesn't make a significant impact on men. During the study men's eating habits didn't seem to change in mixed or same-sex groups. Either they (men) don't really care that much, or all these guys seemed to get extra hungry. Maybe that should be the next study. "Do men really care about women's eating habits?" That or spend time doing something like finding a cure for cancer, or solving world hunger. You know just those small little things.

Outdoor Concerts, Fun At A Price (And I Don't Mean The Price For Tickets)

If you are like me, then you are out this summer going to concerts. I love music, and I love watching a band perform live, especially those bands that are not only amazing musicians, but amazing performers. Anyway, this coming Friday August 7th, I'm going to an outdoor concert, and many of those outdoor concerts are a blast, but it comes at a price..
The last outdoor concert I went to, was amazing, but the rain just didn't stop. However, this time it appears to look as if it will be hot, and this brings new risks to my health and anyone else's health. Now, again as much as I love music, it can damage your hearing. Especially at a rock concert, where the music can actually cause permanent hearing damage. If you are worried about this, ear plug should be considered. You just need them to lesson the volume, not stop it altogether, what would be the point of the concert be then? If you don't know what the volume of the concert will be like then bring ear plugs just in case. If you do experience lasting symptoms, or anything you believe to be irregular then go see your doctor immediately to prevent permanent damage. Also, in the heat there are a vast amount of health hazards. Dehydration can become very serious. You are outside in the sun with thousands of people cramped into a small space (small in relation to the large number of people). Make sure to drink plenty of fluids. Also, wear sunscreen. You will be outside baking in the sun all day and that much exposure can leave a serious burn, and may eventually lead to cancer. Side-note: If you are worried about bodily harm I would advise staying out of the mosh pit, but that is up to you. Make sure you enjoy the concert, but you should be safe while doing so. So now I've covered some of the potential health risks. Now I can't wait to see Heaven and Hell with Coheed and Cambria.
