Natural Health and Beautifying Remedies from A - Z

Cheap natural remedies for anything from anxiety, to oily skin, to a queasy stomach, to zits!

Anxiety – Chamomile is an amazing remedy for Anxiety. Chamomile tea is cheap and widely available.

Bloating – Drink sage or fennel tea to alleviate your bloated sensation.

Constipation – Grapes, oranges, papaya, pears, and figs are great fruits to cure diarrhea and stimulate the bowels. AS for vegetables, spinach will disintegrate your diarrhea.

Dehydration – Avoid coffee, tea, and pop. The more of the bad beverages you drink, the more water you must consume. Eat fruits and veggies.

Earaches –Sprinkle basil in carrier oil and rub it in and around your ear. Oils are essential in curing earaches.

Fatigue – Mix 3 parts lemongrass, 2 parts cloves, and 1 part nutmeg, rosemary, and black pepper in boiling water to make tea to fight fatigue.

Gas – Chew your food and prevent future gas and possible embarrassment. Dandelion tea also prevents gas and can be simply homemade using the milk found in the dandelion stem.

Hiccups –Inhale as deeply as you can, until you feel you can inhale no further. Then swallow. Repeat!

Insomnia – Eat proteins to help you sleep. Herbal tea may also aid you in sleeping.

Joint stiffness – avoid cold water and attempt to get lots of calcium, vitamin c, and zinc to prevent and cure joint stiffness.

Knee pain
– Rest is all I can prescribe. Don’t get down on your knees to do anything. You might need to buy a new pair of shoes.

Lost voice – Gargle with Aloe Vera juice twice a day. Boil pomegranate rinds and drink the juice. Tumeric powder dissolved into boiling water also helps considerably.

Migraines – Using menthol ointment or Vicks Vapor Rub works when applied to your face with a q-tip. It also helps if you place a warm towel over your face.

Nausea – eat a banana before breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Drink coke in very small sips. Stir 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar into water and drink.

Oily skin – Apply diluted tea tree oil to dry out oily patches of skin. For very severe oily skin use a mix of lemon juice, flour, and turmeric powder in a paste and massage it onto your face like a facial.

Post nasal drip – Drink herbal tea or eat soup. Gargle with salt water, baking soda to clear up post nasal drip.

Queasy stomach – Similar to nausea, queasy stomach can be cured with sipping coke, or smelling ginger. Sucking on ginger flavored candies can also solve the queasiness.

Rashes – Olive oil, baking powder, and provides some help in the irritation of rashes. Washing the affected area with chamomile tea can also provide relief.

Sunburn – Do not use vinegar! Although it may be suggested, vinegar is ghastly for most sunburns and for most people does not take away the burn, therefore don’t risk it. Take a bath in cool water with an added cup or two of oatmeal. Soak the sunburn in peppermint tea, but make sure it is lukewarm before applying.

Teeth whitening – Do not use lemon juice or strawberries, as they strip your enamel off your teeth. Lemon peel may be a safer option, as is eating crunchy vegetables. Baking soda is the best option. It whitens, kills bacteria, and reduces acids which may potentially harm the enamel.

Under eye dark circles – Slices of cucumber placed on the dark area for 10 minutes, refrigerated teaspoons placed on the skin under your eyes, and empty teabags (or full chamomile teabags) all help reduce the dark circles you may get under your eyes.

Vertigo – Lemon and lime peel added to your meals can help reduce vertigo symptoms. Mix almonds, pumpkin seeds, poppy seeds, and wheat and leave overnight. Grind up (to a powder) and fry with butter and cloves in the morning. Mix it with milk and boil. Drink it. It is said to cure vertigo fast.

Warts – Eat garlic, it will remove warts and prevent any viruses causing future warts. Cut a potato and rub it on the warts for 5 – 10 minutes, twice a day, for a week.

Yeast infection – Tea tree oil is a good remedy, but always be diluted. Inserting a garlic tab or clove into the vagina every few hours provides relief.

Zits – Cut potatoes, vinegar, lemon juice, toothpaste, garlic, lime juice, and basil, applied to the affected area are said to help rid of zits.

Curious Cases - Fatal Familial Insomnia

Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) is a very rare condition that affects the brain causing the complete loss of sleep, and eventually death. The condition is caused by a gene mutation that can be passed down to the children of those that suffer from FFI. However, FFI has only been found in 50 families worldwide.

The condition was discovered in 1974, by Dr. Ignazio Roiter who investigated a family who had a history of deaths by insomnia. The condition affects the thalamus, the part of the brain that is responsible for regulating sleep. Initial symptoms of the condition include insomnia, but progress to much more severe symptoms over time.

Generally, the condition begins to present itself in those ages 30-60, but most commonly in those of 50 years of age. The condition takes between 7-36 months to result in death. FFI has 4 stages of development. The first stage incorporates increasing insomnia, panic attacks, paranoia, and phobias. During the second stage, hallucinations begin to manifest, and panic attacks become much more noticeable. By the third stage, sleep is impossible and rapid weight loss begins to occur. Finally, in the fourth stage dementia sets in, leaving the patient unresponsive or mute until the patient dies.

Unfortunately, there is no current treatment for FFI. Scientists have tried some methods of possible treatment, such as gene therapy, but the treatments have been unsuccessful so far. However, there has been some evidence that suggests treatments that focus on the symptoms can improve the quality of life for a short while.

I can't imagine how horrible it would be to slowly lose my ability to sleep and eventually die after months of agony and the very significant possibility of insanity. The worst part about this condition is the fact that there really isn't a whole lot anyone can do to help. Unfortunately because FFI is such a rare condition I have a feeling a cure won’t be available for quite some time, but here's hoping that someone finds out how to fix it.

How Stress can Make you Sick

Stress is sometimes considered to be the root to all ailments. When we are stressing out our bodies can't put as much energy into keeping us healthy. We can suffer from things like cold sores, flu's, and indigestion when we have too much on the brain. Here are some ways stress can make you sick, and how to become healthy by reducing your stress levels.

Headaches and Migraines - When you are stressing out, your brain will go through hormonal, neurochemical events that stimulate your nerves and cause your blood vessels to swell. This creates pressure in the brain and causes headaches. to reduce the number of headaches and migraines you experience, try relaxation and stress-management techniques. Doing this has been proven to reduce the number of headaches you have up to 50%.

Colds - Stress weakens the immune system, therefore making it easier for you to get sick. A recent study at Carnegie Mellon University surveyed volunteers about what was happening in their lives, and then exposed them to a cold virus. Those coping with high stress levels were twice as likely to become sick than those with lower levels of stress, or no feelings of stress at all.

Stomach Aches - Anxiety and stress can cause your body to produce more digestive acid, which leads to heartburn. Stress can also slow the digestion of food in the stomach, causing gas and bloating, and can affect the muscles in your colon resulting in cramps and diarrhea. The next time you start to become stressed or anxious about a big presentation at work or while you are rushing to meet deadlines, take a 5 minute break to relax and collect yourself.

Breakouts - Ever notice that your skin breaks out before an important event that you've been worked up about - such as your sisters wedding or your Christmas dinner party? Stress effects the levels of the hormone androgen in the body which triggers your glands to speed up oil production in the skin. this causes clogging which leads to break outs. When you're stressed out your nerve endings can also act up leading to skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, and even cold sores. To prevent break outs, drink lots of water and spend at least an hour a day doing something stress free and relaxing.

Insomnia - Stress is the biggest cause of sleep deprivation. When you are lying in bed and your mind is still thinking about all of the problems you have to deal with in the morning, its hard to get a good night's sleep. A lack of sleep leads to other problems including a weakened immune system and other stress problems and it becomes a vicious circle. If you are having difficulty winding down before bed, try taking a soothing bubble bath to calm down.

Back Pain - Research shows that chronic back pain is usually caused by stress. Stress triggers the nervous system to reduce blood flow to the muscles making them have more spasms. When people hunch over and tense their shoulder and neck due to stress and anxiety it makes things worse and can lead to back problems.

Infertility - Stress will impact every part of the body - especially the reproductive system. A woman is less likely to become pregnant if she is having a hard time dealing with stress. Learning how to cope with stress can reduce your distress and boost your chances of conceiving.

Important Questions to ask your Doctor Before Taking a Prescription Drug

When you are prescribed a drug by your doctor, make sure you ask them the right questions in order to see if the drug is necessary to treat your condition. Sometimes drugs can be a simple alternative to a difficult natural therapy, however the prices of prescription drugs can burn a hole in your pocket, and may not be the best therapy for your body.

1. Is drug therapy really needed to treat this problem?

There are many problems that do not need to be treated with prescription drugs. Things like premenstrual pain, and anxiety or depression after bereavement can sometimes be treated without prescription drugs. Over-the-counter (OTC) and balanced exercise, diet, and lifestyle can sometimes treat your condition. Sometimes the proper remedy is spending therapeutic time with family and loved ones. A recent study found that people who suffer from major depression can be helped by facing up to and solving their problems instead of hiding behind antidepressants. Make sure your doctor is certain in recommending the use of prescription medication to prevent your condition from worsening.

2. When did this drug first come on the market?

Recently approved drugs are causing more and more problems for users. Newer drugs tend to come with more side effects and a higher price tag due to drug company marketing. If you are taken off an older drug that you are used to, and put onto a newer drug, be careful. Your doctor may be testing the new drug's effectiveness on you.

3. What kinds of substances or activities should I avoid when taking this drug?

It's important to find out as much as you can about a drug before taking it. Sometimes doing everyday things like driving a car or having a glass of wine may not be safe when you are using medication. It is also very important that you ask your doctor if other drugs, prescription or OTC, will react with the drug being prescribed to you. Always tell your doctor about any prescription or non-prescription drugs that you use before taking another drug.

4. What will happen if I don't take this drug?

To become aware of all possible outcomes, ask your doctor if your condition will worsen over time if you don't take the drug.

5. Is there a Generic drug that will help me?

Generic drugs tend to be less expensive than brand name drugs. Ask your doctor for the generic brand.

Kava Kava, The Natural Anxiety Reducer

Kava or Piper Methsyticum is a tall shrub that is part of the pepper family that grows in the South Pacific islands. The root which is used medicinally has been traditionally chewed or made into a drink is available in capsule, tablet, or liquid extract.

Most commonly people use Kava to help treat with their anxiety and insomnia. However, Kava can cause sedation, and when taking high amounts, intoxication may also occur. There have actually been quite a few studies on the effects of Kava. Most have shown that Kava does appear to be effective in treating anxiety. However, the effects are generally mild if taken as directed.

However, there have been some things that should be known. The FDA issued a warning about Kava in 2002. There have also been a list of some rather troubling side effects. Kava has been linked with liver conditions including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and even liver failure. However, these liver reactions are thought to be due to pre-existing liver disease.

There are some other side-effects and drug interactions that have been reported with Kava. Remember before you try Kava to talk to you doctor first.

4 Reasons Why Sleep Is Important

1.Recharges Energy - Sleep is a very necessary part of life that all humans need. When we sleep our bodies have a chance to "recharge." Adequate sleep is needed in order to maintain the energy levels we need for daily activities. On average, adults need eight-nine hours of sleep, children need ten-twelve hours of sleep, and teenagers require about ten hours of sleep.

2.Boosts Immune System - Our body uses sleep to repair itself and build things like bone, muscle, and tissues. Although the body does this throughout the day when we are awake, during sleep the body does not need to divide its attention and instead is able to focus its entire attention on one task.

3.Sleep Deprivation Can Cause Mental Problems - Adequate sleep has shown increases in performance and concentration, but when the body does not receive the appropriate amount of sleep the outcomes can be extremely damaging. The body uses sleep as a time to unwind and cope with the stress we built up during the day. By depriving the body of sleep we allow ourselves to become prone to developing insomnia, depression, anxiety and many other illnesses. Additionally, when adequate sleep is not achieved proper hormone balance is not acquired, resulting in things like memory lapses, hallucinations, and mood and behavior problems.

4.Lack of Sleep Can Kill - Along with severe mental problems, sleep deprivation can turn deadly very quickly. According to the National Highway Safety Administration (NHSA), falling asleep while behind the wheel is responsible for at least 100,000 crashes, 71,000 injuries, and 1,550 deaths each year in the United States alone. Additionally, young people in their teens and twenties, who are particularly susceptible to the effects of chronic sleep loss are involved in greater than 1/2 of the "fall-asleep" crashes on American highways.

How to Calm Down

If you're like most people on this Earth you probably get pretty worked up occasionally. Whether this is because of anger or from nervousness doesn't really matter, what matters is how to calm down when you are in a frenzied state.

Start off by the most obvious (though at the time nothing may seem obvious) choice, take a deep breath. By breathing you provide more oxygen to your body and release physical tension. Plus taking breathing you can pretty much do anywhere, unless you're underwater somewhere. Also, try breathing through your nose. Studies have shown many benefits from breathing through your nose, while mouth breathing has shown many negatives. Either way make sure you breathe, cause you know without oxygen you kind of die.

Exercise works great to help you calm yourself down, so why no take a walk if you're feeling angry, nervous or anything else in between. By taking a walk you let your body calm down by releasing endorphins and allow yourself to remove the current situation. You then give yourself some time to think about what is happening, not to mention you're getting exercise too!

Take a minute to really look at the current situation. Look at what made you feel the way you do, and why it did. Then try to assess the different view points. If there is another person involved then try to see their point of view. If you are having a hard time with this find a friend you can count on. Tell your friend all the details of what is going on, and then get your friend to give you some feedback. Tell him/her to be completely honest with you.

I hope these few steps help you the next time you need to just calm down and relax. If there are any other ways to calm down that you think are more effective feel free to leave a comment.
