5 Things that are Harming your Skin

1. Picking at Pimples!

Picking, popping, or squeezing pimples will actually cause them to become more red and inflamed – and the oil on your fingers will make them worse.

2. Salon Tanning

No matter what kind of UV rays you expose yourself to, you are damaging your skin. Tanning beds and booths emit UV light just like the sun that can burn, cause premature aging, cancer, and sunspots.

3. Shaving with 4 blade razors

If you have acne or bumpy skin, getting the closest shave, isn't for you. They may have promoting commercials, but these razors end up shaving off more than they should – including layers of skin. To prevent skin irritation, avoid the razors that give you "the closest shave".

4. Smoking

Smoking has more risks that lung cancer and heart disease. Over time, nicotine will start to cause the blood vessels in your skin to contract, preventing oxygen flow throughout skin cells. Keep smoking and one day you’ll end up with saggy, possibly yellow-ish skin - quit smoking and you may save your skin.

5. Too much Vitamin A

Vitamin is said to help with acne, however too much of it can cause serious internal problems like severe liver damage. Be careful and take your vitamin A in the right doses. Pumpkin, carrots, and spinach are good sources of vitamin A, but don't go crazy on the vitamins - try treating acne with oral Accutane - as prescribed by your doctor.

Heliocare, the Future in Sun Protection

If you've ever been into any kind of sci-fi movies or television shows you've almost definitely seen the characters on the show popping pills for everything, from food pills, to pills that somehow instantly cure wounds that no man, Chuck Norris included, could survive. I'm sure you've wondered, "When are we going to get those?" Well, maybe we've already got them.

Heliocare, an oral dietary supplement is loaded with antioxidants which help protect the skin against sun damage. The almost too-good-to-be-true pill is very real, and in fact is the first oral sun protectant to be clinically proven to prevent free radicals, premature aging, and hyperpigmentation.

For those that are into the natural medicines, here is some good news, the main ingredient, Polypodium leucotomos extract, is 100% natural. Two other key ingredients found in Heliocare are beta-carotene, an efficient anti-free-radical agent, and green tea extract, which has potent antioxidant activity, protects DNA, and can regenerate oxidized Vitamin E.

However, for those that are wondering, Heliocare is not a replacement for sunscreen and protective clothing. Even the Heliocare website states this, and even suggests that Heliocare should be taken with sunscreen and protective clothing to provide the best protection for the consumer.

Furthermore, Heliocare does not carry any known side effects. In fact, Polypodium leucotomos extract has been safely used for over 20 years! Heliocare has been published in many top medical journals, including The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Additionally, Heliocare has been widely recommended by doctors all over the world.

Here is what the Heliocare website says their product does.

"
- Increased tolerance to the sun
- Reduced skin changes after chronic exposure to the sun
- Helps maintain your skin's elasticity
- Provides cell protection in the epidermis
- Protects skin cell DNA"

However, the Heliocare website also says, "Do not use Polypodium leucotomos extracts during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Heliocare supplements should not be taken if you are on Digoxin or any other medicines used to treat heart failure. Also note that there have been no specific studies in patients under the age of 18. Consult with your doctor first before allowing your children to use Heliocare pills."

Vitamin D extends and improves life

A few minutes of sunshine a day goes a long way - literally.

Experts have recently revealed that a regular intake of vitamin D has the capability of extending your life expectancy by up to 7%. A lead researcher Dr. Philippe Autier said it is not clear how vitamin D lowers risks of mortality, but he suggested that it may block cancer cell proliferation or improve blood vessel and immune system functions. In past studies, vitamin D has also been proven to prevent other life -threatening illnesses such as breast cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, and multiple sclerosis. In addition, vitamin D maintains the calcium and phosphorous concentrations in the body, therefore makes stronger healthier bones.

On top of the physical health benefits that vitamin D provides, sunshine has also been proven to increase levels of serotonin (a chemical in the body that acts as a messenger to the brain) therefore instantly increasing and enlightening the mood. Next time you find yourself overcome with negative emotions, try taking a breather outdoors in the sunlight.

When the weather doesn't permit, or if it's during winter months, try taking vitamin D supplements. Research has found that the benefits of these supplements can be even greater than that of direct sunlight, as sunlight imposes harmful rays to the skin upon too much exposure - especially to infants. The recommended dose of vitamin D per day for an adult is 1000 international units (IU). Talk to your doctor about taking vitamin D supplements during fall and winter. Vitamin D will improve your immune system and put you in better mood.
