6 Myths Your Parents Told you: Were they right?

1. If you don't wait 30 minutes before you swim after you eat, you will get stomach cramps and drown

False! I truly believed this when I was a child. The only time I ever swam immediately after I ate, I had an unfortunate accident and was convinced it was because of this myth. For some reason parents were under the impression that because your blood moves to the stomach to help digest food, there will not be enough blood to circulate through your arms and legs to keep them working properly. In truth we have enough blood to keep all of our parts functioning just fine after we eat. This myth was probably created to allow parents to rest after eating before having to be on the watch over their children at a pool without lifeguards.

2. If you swallow your gum, it will take 7 years to digest

False! Perhaps our mom's got confused somewhere down the line when the gum packages read "indigestible". Indigestible means that the components of gum can't be broken down by your stomach acids. The same thing that happens to corn happens to your gum - you will find it intact upon exiting the body.

3. Don't crack your knuckles - it will give you arthritis

False! For those who are avid knuckle crackers, this is good news. According to research, there has been no solid proof that there is a link between cracking your knuckles and developing arthritis. It is believed that when the bones are pulled apart, they release a gas bubble and break the adhesive seal in the joints and many people thought that this can inflame the joints and cause arthritis. The truth is that although many people in the US partake in frequent knuckle cracking, it probably isn't the healthier habit out there. Cracking your knuckles can decrease your grip strength and weaken the fingers.

4. Having candy before bedtime will give you nightmares

True! Studies have found that going to bed on a full stomach can increase brain stimulation, therefore triggering nightmares. Apparently unhealthy foods create even scarier nightmares. A study conducted in 2000 found that after feeding ice cream, sandwiches, and candy bars to participants 30 minutes before going to bed, seven of the participants had nightmares while sleeping. The next night, the nightmares dramatically diminished for four of the participants. This may have been a way for your parents to scam you out of dessert though - sleeping on a full stomach (no matter the sugar content) can have the same effect.

5. Coffee will stunt your growth

False! I actually believed this up until the time I met someone who is 6 foot 1 and apparently started drinking coffee when he was a toddler. Research proves that height can only be affected by genetics - no matter how much coffee you drink or don't drink, your height is predetermined. The reason the myth was created was probably another way to keep kids under control - the caffeine in coffee is a very strong stimulant. In adults, coffee can actually be a good thing for your body - there are recent studies that have found a link between coffee and diabetes prevention.

6. Going outside with wet hair or without a jacket will make you sick

False! This is more to keep you feeling comfortable outside than anything. The only thing that can make us sick is exposure to a virus. By inhaling airborne viruses released by the cough or sneeze of a sick person is the most common way to catch a cold. Its more likely that you will get sick indoors where viral particles are trapped than outside.

6 Health Signs That Shouldn't Be Ignored

Last winter, actress Natasha Richardson was admitted after complaining of a headache. Earlier that day she was skiing on a beginner hill and took a fall without wearing a helmet. She claimed she felt fine and joked about the fall with her ski instructor, and carried on with her day. An ambulance that could have saved her life was turned away. Richardson said she felt fine and didn't think anything of the head trauma, ignoring a dangerous health sign that caused her death. Seemingly mild symptoms can be more dangerous that we think - so a little knowledge about health signs could one day save your life.

1. Splitting headaches - We all get headaches every now and then, but if you ever experience a headache more painful than any other headache you've had before, make sure you go to the doctor. It could be a sinus headache if you have a cold, but it could also be a brain tumor or a hemorrhage. If you aren't completely sure what causes the pain, have it checked out. Painful headaches are also a symptom of brain bleeding and could be signs of an aneurysm. If you also are unable to move your neck, you may have meningitis and require immediate antibiotics to prevent damage.

2. Pins and needles sensation in the feet or legs - Nearly 24 million Americans have diabetes, and 1/4 of those are not diagnosed. High blood sugar levels could damage your nervous system (causing pins and needles) and resulting in diabetes and deadly complications if not diagnosed. This is the first sign of diabetes for many people.

3. Stomach pain - If you have intense pain in your stomach and still have your appendix, head to the ER right away. An appendix could rupture within 48 to 72 hours after symptoms start. A ruptured appendix can cause an infection that can be life-threatening.

4. Calf pain - A blood clot that occurs deep down in the calf vein is called thrombosis. Affecting 2 million Americans a year, deep vein thrombosis can be life-threatening. A piece of the clot can break loose and cause a clot in the lungs. Cancer, obesity, immobility due to bed rest or long-distance travel, pregnancy, and advanced age are risk factors.

5. Chest pain - Chest pain is the most important health symptom that shouldn't be ignored. Discomfort in the chest (such as pressure) is the first sign of a heart attack. Don't wait for the feeling of pain before you call a doctor - if it feels like an elephant is sitting on your chest, have someone call 911 immediately.

6. Shortness of breath - If you feel short of breath after running after the bus or taking the stairs, its nothing to be worried about. If you are experiencing shortness of breath while sitting down, however, it is a sign of heart failure. It could also be asthma, anxiety, or a blood clot in the lungs.

7 Ways to Prevent Cancer

There are many simple lifestyle changes you can make in order to prevent cancer. Following these tips will put you on the path towards better health and hopefully a cancer-free future.

1. Don't smoke - You've probably been warned of this many times before, but whoever was warning you had a valid reason to. Smoking is the highest cancer risk factor that we can control. Smoking is responsible for lung cancer, and many other types of cancer. The best way to prevent cancer is to never start - or quit if you already smoke. Secondhand smoke is also a significant cancer risk factor. The smoke contains more than 60 carcinogens which disturb natural cell development and can trigger the development of cancer cells.

2. Be sun safe - It is important to try to get 15 minutes of sunlight on your skin each day. Researchers have found that getting too little sunlight can be a cause of numerous cancers such as breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, and stomach cancer. In addition, a lack of vitamin D can cause osteoporosis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and high blood pressure.

Be careful not to get too much sun though. Over one million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer each year. In order to prevent skin cancer, avoid UV ray over-exposure by wearing sunscreen when outside, avoiding the hot mid day sun, and staying away from tanning beds. If you want to be safe, yet still get the vitamin D you need, get vitamin D supplements.

3. Drink more water! - Stop for a glass of water whenever you can. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1996 found that men who drank 6 full glasses of water every day reduced their risk of contracting bladder cancer by half. Another study found that women who drank a lot of water reduced their risk of developing colon cancer by up to 45%.

4. Drink Green tea - Ancient cultures have always believed that the benefits of green tea are superfluous - it's no wonder that new research shows that green tea protects against numerous cancers, as well as heart disease. Some scientists believe that a certain chemical in green tea is one of the most powerful anticancer agents ever discovered!

5. Eat more fish - Researchers found that people who ate four or more servings of fish each week were 1/3rd less likely to develop blood cancers such as leukemia, myeloma, and non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The omega 3 acids in fish are said to reduce a woman's risk of developing endometrial cancer.

6. Eat your veggies - a proper diet (and regular exercise) will ensure that you get your essential vitamins and nutrients and keep you healthy. Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants which help damaged cells, and many important vitamins which make you healthy. Many studies suggest that reaching ideal levels of vitamins and minerals in the body can improve the immune system and prevent a variety of cancers and illnesses. If you're a picky eater, take a multivitamin every morning.

7. Wet your Whistle... in moderation - Beer protects the body against a bacteria which is known to cause ulcers and can be linked to stomach cancer. Easy on the drinks though, more than one or two alcohol beverages a day can actually increase your risk of developing mouth, throat, esophageal, liver, and breast cancer.

Coffee and Tea are linked to Diabetes Prevention

According to the International Diabetes foundation, By 2025, about 380 million people worldwide will be affected by Type 2 diabetes. It is suggested that some day, people who are at greater risk for diabetes may be told to consume more tea and coffee on a regular basis as well as exercising more often.

Researchers looking at 18 studies involving over 450,000 people between 1966 and 2009 have found the link between coffee and diabetes. The data was recently analyzed by Rachel Huxley and her colleagues from the George Institute for International Health in Sydney, Australia.

Huxley found that each cup of coffee that a person drank per day reduced the risk of diabetes by 7%. The researchers from the Archives of Internal Medicine concluded that those who drink three or four cups a day have a 25% lower risk than those who drank between zero and two cups per day. People who drink more than three cups of decaf coffee a day have around a 1/3rd lower risk of developing diabetes. Those who drink more than three to four cups of tea have a 1/5th lower risk than those who drink no tea.

The fact that these results were found in decaf beverages eliminates the possibility that caffeine is the cause. Researchers suggest that compounds in the drinks such as magnesium or antioxidants might be linked to the findings. Other research showed that caffeine may actually increase the risk of diabetes in obese people. More research must be made in order to take into account specific things like the effects on certain ethnic groups and whether tea drinkers are more health aware than coffee drinkers in general.

Building Personal Exercise Habits for Life

As most of us know exercising is a crucial part of staying healthy, along with eating a healthy diet. However, variety is key in both cases. You might love potatoes, but if you have those same type of potatoes every night they start to get boring and you don't want them anymore. The same is true for exercise. If you don't vary your routine then you can become bored and just give up. Also, by staying to a fixed routine your muscles become used to doing the same thing over and over again, much like muscle memory.

The idea of switching your routine is used very frequently with many successful workout tapes and guides. If you can't think of one of the top of your head just remember P90X. The same concept is used in P90X, they call it muscle confusion. It focuses on varying the routine so your muscles don't adjust to one routine. This way your muscles are challenged and you can actually work more efficiently.

Also, something to remember is that you shouldn't focus on the same muscle groups everyday. Try to switch up your workout so you give specific muscle groups 2 days to rest. For example if you worked out your arms and back one day do your core the next day. Then the day after your core work your legs. This lets your muscle groups rest and repair.

Well if you're sitting there not knowing what you can do to vary up your routine don't worry. There are different types of exercises you can do. If you love running, that's great, but try to do some strength training as well.

Aerobic exercise can feature a vast number of exercises. Jogging for example is an aerobic exercise. The main goal of aerobics is to get your heart to really start working. By doing this the amount of oxygen in your blood will improve. Also exercise has been known to release things like endorphins which are your bodies natural painkillers. Additionally, your immune system should receive a boost and your blood will pump much more efficiently. Also, you will begin to see an increase in your overall stamina.

Interval training has been proven to condition your heart and burn fat more efficiently then just jogging or walking. Try some sprints with gentle recovery periods. You will notice you will be saving more time by doing interval training, but still see results. Interval training is also a great way to really improve your cardiovascular fitness and fat-burning abilities.

Next is my personal favorite type of training, strength training. Make sure you include some sort of strength training into your normal exercise program. The goal is to really exhaust your muscles. Right to the point when you can feel your muscles screaming to stop, but you've just got to pump out one more rep. Don't hurt yourself doing this though, waiting for injuries to heal isn't fun.

Finally, we move onto core exercises. These are probably my worst area of fitness. I personally have never liked core exercises, but that probably has something to do with the fact that I've never really had good core muscles. However, core muscles are probably some of the most important muscles to work. They provide the building blocks for movement and help protect parts of your body. Also, building core muscles can help increase your balance and stability, for all you sports fans or the extra clumsy.

Exercising regularly is key to keeping one healthy. Many people don't remember that and I think that's why they don't get motivated. If you want to have abs then go workout. It won't just magically happen overnight. You need to be determined, you need to want it, you need to stay focused. Working out isn't easy, but it definitely can be fun. Try to enjoy yourself. Find someone to go to the gym with. This might help keep you going back to the gym and staying on track.

If you're still not convinced how about these reasons why exercise can improve your health.

1. Lower your blood pressure
2. Helps prevent and fight off colds
3. Manage arthritis
4. Lower your risk of heart disease
5. Helps cure insomnia
6. Fight depression
7. Lower your risk of diabetes and reverse pre-diabetes
8. Build strong bones
9. Lose weight
10. Reduces your risk of cancer
11. Helps you think better
12. Helps relieve chronic knee pain
13. Increases your energy levels
14. Slow down your aging process

5 Warning Signs Men Shouldn't Ignore

Well let us get straight to the point here, men are stubborn. It is hard for some of us to admit it, but it is very true. Men tend to avoid going to the doctor if they experience some... well let's say some sort of discomfort or irregularity. Women on the other hand tend to go to the doctor as soon as they get something like a headache or a stomach ache, well maybe not exactly like that, but they tend to visit the doctor if they notice something that is irregular and could pose a health threat.

Men (yes, myself included), don't really like going to the hospital very much and tend to put off some very troubling warning signs. The problem is the more macho you are (or the more macho you act) the less likely you are to go to the hospital. However, many men experience some warning signs that can be dangerous even fatal in some cases.

1. Chest pain: Well this would seem like a pretty obvious sign that basically comes out with a baseball bat and hits you saying "GO TO THE DOCTOR, RIGHT NOW!!!" However, the truth of the matter is that any men decide to just ignore it. Chest pain can be a sign of heart attack so next time you should probably get it checked out.

2. A big belly: It is true that when men get in relationships and/or get married they tend to put on a few pounds, but a big belly may be a sign of something else. Belly fat could indicate that a man has low testosterone levels, and low testosterone can increase the risk of diabetes and coronary artery disease.

3. An unenthusiastic penis: Yes, impotence can just be purely psychological, but it also could be a sign that a man has cardiovascular disease. If the arteries that supply blood to the penis aren't working properly, those that supply blood to the heart and brain might not be working so well either. Men that have erectile dysfunction should try to talk to their doctors about more than getting that little blue pill.

4. More frequent urination: frequent urination may be a sign of prostatitis, or inflammation of the prostate gland. If you get up in the middle of the night to urinate, especially more than once then you might want to tell your doctor about it.

5. Prescription drug addiction: Some people that get hooked to prescription medication don't even realize they are addicted, and once you get addicted it is probably a pretty good indicator that you should stop. Addiction to anything can be very serious, but when you start popping Vicoden like Pez from a Pez dispenser (Much like Dr. House from the television show that shares the same name) then you should hopefully know you've got a problem.

5 Reasons Why You Should Drink Coffee

For those that are much like me and love their cup of coffee whenever they can get it, there are many positive benefits of drinking that cup of what I like to call, pure "awesomeness."

1. Helps prevent brain illnesses such as, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and dementia. Numerous studies have shown that caffeine helps in the protection from brain diseases. A study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health showed that the moderate consumption of caffeine cut the risk of developing Parkinson's disease in half!

2. Protects against diabetes. That's right, drinking coffee helps prevent diabetes type 2, the type of diabetes where the body tissues actually become resistant to insulin. A study from the Archives of Internal Medicine found that women who drank 6 or more cups of coffee a day were 22% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than women who drank no coffee at all.

3. Coffee contains antioxidants. Antioxidants help prevent cell damage, which is related to the process of aging. However, this cell damage is also tied to many forms of cancer. German researchers found a potent antioxidant compound in coffee that appears to boost phase 2 enzymes, which are believed to prevent colon cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

4. Coffee reduces the risk of eye spasms that lead to blindness. A study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry showed that coffee may reduce the risk of the eye disorder blepharospasm, which can lead to blindness. Current treatments for the disorder are botox injections, or the surgical removal of eyelid nerves. However, the study found that patients who drank two or more cups of coffee a day could prevent the onset of the eye disorder by 1.7 years for every extra cup they drank.

5. Coffee reduces muscle pain. A study published in the Journal of Pain, showed that drinking coffee can reduced muscle pain after a workout quite significantly. In fact, two cups of coffee were found to reduce muscle pain by up to 48%!
