Winter Blues or SAD?

Have you been feeling down since the dark days of winter began? Having trouble sleeping? Do you lack your normal levels of energy? If so, you may be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

What is SAD?

SAD is a form of clinical depression. People usually experience SAD syndrome beginning in late autumn or early winter, and they last until spring or early summer. SAD is thought to be caused by seasonal variations in light.
SAD is most common in northern countries where seasonal variations in light are considerable, and winter tends to be longer and harsher. In the United States, approximately 4-6% of the population is affected by SAD; 10-20% of the population experiences a less severe form of the disorder, “winter-onset SAD.” There is also a reverse form of the disorder called summer-onset depression, which affects people during the summer months.

SAD is more common in women than in men. Although adults over 20 are the ones most affected by the syndrome, children and teenagers can suffer from the disorder as well.

What causes SAD?

SAD was only fairly recently recognized as a disorder, so it is not fully understood. Since  it occurs more in northern parts of the world and light therapy seems to be effective in treating it, it is thought to be related to the varying levels of light throughout the seasons.
Light affects the nerve centers in our brain that control daily moods and the rhythms of our “internal clock.” Researchers are particularly interested in the role of melatonin and serotonin in SAD. Melatonin is a hormone secreted by a gland in the brain at night and during hours of low light. It is known to cause a drowsy feeling. Since there are lower levels of light during the winter the brain may release more melatonin, accounting for lower levels of energy in those suffering from SAD. It has been observed that sunlight has an effect on serotonin, a chemical in the brain, which also may play a role in SAD.

What are the symptoms of SAD?

The symptoms of SAD can range from mild to severe. For some, it can be debilitating, and for others simply a mild inconvenience. In general, SAD syndrome symptoms include:

- Decreased energy

- Irritability

- Avoidance of social situations

- Changes in appetite, and craving sweet foods

- Weight gain

- Tendency to oversleep

- Difficulty concentrating

- Feelings of anxiety and depression

How is SAD diagnosed?

The diagnosis of SAD can be difficult because many of the symptoms are similar to other forms of depression or bipolar disorder. People with mild cases of seasonal depression may just dismiss their symptoms as just simply the “winter blues.” One of the most telling signs is if the symptoms occur at the same time of year for more than two years in a row, and disappear in the spring and summer. Those with SAD also have normal mental health during the rest of the year.

How is SAD treated?

There are many ways that SAD-sufferers can deal with their disorder, which can help manage and relieve symptoms:

- One way to deal with SAD is to get as much light as possible. Setting your desk up by a window, getting out for a walk during the day, and cutting back any trees or shrubs that block light from getting into your house, may help.

- Exercise, particularly outside during daylight hours, can help reduce stress and anxiety that often accompanies the disorder.

- Some people find that getting away to a sunnier warmer place brings temporary relief from the symptoms of SAD.

- Light therapy is another way of coping with SAD. You can purchase a special fluorescent light box which will provide an artificial source of light during the dark months of winter.

- Anti-depressant medication can be useful for treating SAD, particularly for those whose symptoms are especially severe.

- Behavior therapy and counseling are other tools for treating SAD.

- Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet, which may prevent over-eating and reduce the risks of weight gain associated with the disorder, are important also.

If you think you or someone you know may be suffering from SAD, speak with your doctor. They will be able to advise you on the best course of action. Your “winter blues” may be just that, or they may be a sign that you are suffering from SAD. Undoubtedly, admitting how you feel and learning more about it will help you feel better!

Important Foods for Women

Fish - Most (wild) fish is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 has health benefits like anti-aging properties, skin improving properties, and cancer preventing properties. Wild fish is also full of vitamin D. Vitamin D is a major immune system booster, and it allows for calcium to be absorbed into the body. Because women are more likely than men to develop osteoporosis, it is important that Women consume more vitamin D. Calcium is useless without vitamin D. More benefits of omega-3s include a reduced risk of breast cancer, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and improved brain function.
Broccoli - The main health benefit of broccoli is that it is an amazing cancer preventing food. It has the ability to neutralize carcinogens that are cancer threats, and they help get rid of cancer-causing toxins by stimulating detoxifying enzymes. One compound found in broccoli has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer and cervical cancer as well as stop the spread of existing cancer. Broccoli is full of folate, a crucial nutrient for pregnant women that helps fetal development and protects against birth defects. Broccoli is also a natural mood booster. Depression is twice as common in women than men and the folate in broccoli has been linked to help fight depression by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. Broccoli can also help with PMS symptoms. Broccoli is a diuretic that helps to reduce bloating in women.

Red Meat - Red meat is full of Iron. The main function of iron is to help transport oxygen via the blood stream and distribute it throughout the body. Its really important that women incorporate iron into their diet because they experience monthly blood loss. Iron can be found in other foods such as eggs, oatmeal, and spinach.

Onions - The health benefits from onions are outstanding. Onions are naturally anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and are a natural blood thinner. Onions are rich in chromium, fiber, and vitamin C, and they also contain vitamin B6 which helps with improving mood, manganese, tryptophan, folate, and potassium. These properties help promote good health and healing. In addition, onions are a cancer-fighting food. Women who consume a lot of onions have been linked to a 25% reduced risk of breast cancer and a 73% reduced risk of ovarian cancer.

The Impact 30 Minutes can have on your Entire Life

“I don’t feel like it,” “I’m too tired,” or “I’m not in the mood right now,” are common excuses we all use to avoid getting up from the television couch. People suffering from depression require even more will power to go out and exercise. However, once a routine is established the benefits are endless. Just 30 minutes a day of exercise will have a major impact on your body, both mentally and physically.

People suffering from depression may not even realize how much of an impact it has on their everyday life. This is why exercise and treating depression is so important. Often those suffering from this disorder lose interest in things that they were previously interested in. This is a huge problem because it basically means that everything that was important before is no longer important. Furthermore, depression is an example of a medical disorder that can be positively influenced by exercise as Doctors claim that exercising is very advantageous in terms of dealing with it. Exercise is an antidepressant with no negative side effects. Take advantage of it!

There are many products available that can treat depression. However in order for those drugs to be of advantage physical activity is a necessity. Examples include: Celexa/Citalopram, Effexor XR/Venlafaxine Hcl, Paxil/Paroxetine, and Zoloft/Sertraline.

In general, exercise is extremely beneficial for all age groups. It helps cope with stress, and can make you feel much more happy and relaxed. A study claims that comparatively “Individuals who exercise report fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression, and lower levels of stress and anger” than those that do not exercise regularly. Not only does it improve your mental stability but also increases physical wellness which is a huge problem with Americans today.

5 Health Benefits of Laughter

Good for the Heart - Researchers have discovered that blood flow is significantly affected by laughter. 20 healthy subjects were shown a stress-inducing movie, and then a funny laughter-inducing movie. The results? The stressful movie slowed blood flow by 35% and the comedy increased blood flow by almost 22%. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow and lowers high blood pressure, which in turn helps protect your heart against heart attack and other heart problems.
Boosts your mood - Laughing and smiling are natural anti-depressants. They increase the level of happy, health-enhancing hormones like endorphins and neurotransmitters in your brain, and reduces the level of stress hormones like cortisol, epinephrine, adrenaline, and dopamine. Higher levels of endorphins can give you an instant mood boost making you a happy, positive person. If you want to boost your mood, studies show that the positive effects of laughing and smiling happen regardless of whether or not your smile is real. Go ahead, try it for yourself. Throw fake smiles into your day and feel the instant change in your attitude. Soon enough, your smiles will become authentic.

Improves your immune system – Laughter also increases the amount of antibody-producing cells in your body and improves the effectiveness of T-cells. This will also defend against respiratory tract infections. This means that with laughter, you will experience fever physical side effects of stress and a stronger immune system.

Improves your memory – A study at John Hopkins University Medical School found that providing humor during an lesson lead to an overall increase on test scores for that lesson, therefore humor improves memory. In addition, humor improves your alertness and creativity.

Body workout - A good long laugh exercises the diaphragm, contracts the abdominal and the shoulders. It also challenges your respiratory and facial muscles. This will make you to feel more relaxed after a good laugh.

The Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Health experts believe that omega-3 fatty acids are one of the most important nutrients that is missing from the average American’s diet. This omega-3 deficiency has been extensively studied and may be the reason why there are so many of us suffering from heart disease, cancers, and brain disorders. It has even been discovered that when a proper amount of omega-3 is regularly present in the body, these diseases and disorders tend to become less severe, and sometimes vanish completely.
Anti-Aging

New research shows that omega-3s slow down the cell-aging process. This means that omega-3 fatty acids can protect against skin aging on a cellular level, making your skin appear younger and healthier. By incorporating more fish into your diet or using omega-3 supplements, you can slow down the aging process and feel a healthy, more energetic glow.

Acne and Skin Disorders

Omega-3 fish oil is a natural inflammatory substance. One of the main characteristics of acne is that it causes red, swollen spots on the skin. A a balanced, regular intake of omega-3 will help lessen the severity of the acne inflammation and reduce the look of acne and other skin disorders related to inflammation. In addition, the Omega-3 fish oils will improve the look of hair and nails.

Mental health problems

People who have mental imbalances such as depression, anxiety, mood swings, bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, Alzheimer’s disease, ADHD and ADD have been linked to a deficiency in omega-3 fats. Omega-3 fatty acids can naturally improve the function and balance of hormones in your body.

Cancer

Although it seems like Omega-3 can do anything, it cannot cure cancer, but increased intakes of omega-3 fats have been found to help fight against and help prevent cancers such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and ovarian cancer. More studies are currently being conducted in this area.

5 Quick Pick-me-ups

Bananas - These are serious mood boosters due to their mix of vitamins A, B6, and C; fibre, tryptophan, potassium, phosphorous, iron, protein, and good carbohydrates. The natural sugars in a banana will give you a quick boost of energy while the fibre will help you sustain that energy. This will prevent a drop in your energy and mood and high blood sugar levels. Vitamin B6 helps the brain convert tryptophan into serotonin, the mood boosting hormone. If you’re feeling down and need a snack have a banana.

Body posture – Have you ever noticed that you have a perkier step when you are happy? Happy people walk fast, stand tall and are full of life and energy. Take notice of the way you carry yourself. Try not to shuffle your feet, walk slowly and slouch – this will make you appear lifeless and pessimistic. If your feeling sluggish, taking big steps, standing tall, and walking faster will help you look and feel optimistic and energetic.

Sleep – By getting less sleep than we need (for example – 6 hours instead of 7), our brains tend to lean towards negative thoughts instead of positive ones. An article in the Journal of American Medical Association found that even one night of insufficient sleep can negatively affect our mood. Even though its not easy to get those extra couple hours of sleep, your mood depends on it. Shut off the computers and televisions and get the sleep your brain needs.

Sunlight – getting fresh air and exercise is the best way to boost your mood and your energy. The natural combination on a regular basis will work every time to pick you up. Take long deep breaths as you go on a brisk walk and reap the mood-lifting benefits of exercise. Remember to wear sunscreen when spending long periods of time outside in order to protect against sun damage.

Walnuts - These contain a lot of healthy components that help improve your mood. Walnuts have omega-3s, vitamin B6, tryptophan, protien, and folate. Omega-3s have health benefits including cancer preventing and acne preventing benefits, and have been linked with better moods and lower depression rates. A study by Harvard Medical School found that omega-3s and uridine (another component found in walnuts) worked in the same way as antidepressant medications. The average dose of omega-3 oils is 1,000 mg per day. You can get the same amount in half an ounce of walnuts.

6 Healthy things that Aren’t so Healthy

If you’re an avid blog reader, then you may be getting tired of blogs telling you what you should and shouldn’t do (eat this not that, whatever you do don’t do this) – and sometimes these facts seem to contradict other facts you’ve heard. There are some things that seem healthy enough but may actually do you more harm than good. Be sure to take note of these “healthy habit faux-pas” to protect your body from ailments and keep you in optimal health!

1. Staying in the Sun – you have probably heard that it is healthy to spend 30 minutes in the sun everyday.. well this is only half true. Yes, our bodies need vitamin D to stay strong and fight off illness by improving our immune systems, but too much time in the sun is damaging to your skin. The general rule is if you are going to spend more than 20 minutes in the sun, use SPF 30 all over your body, especially your face where the skin is more susceptible to burns.

2. Religiously using Hand Sanitizer – Ever since the Swine Flu scare, hand sanitizer sales have sky rocketed. Thanks to my former science teacher, I conducted an experiment that proved that hand sanitizer is more likely to get you sick in the long run. The “sanitizing” doesn’t just kill viruses and bad bacteria (there is actually way more good bacteria than bad bacteria on earth to begin with), but they also kill the good bacteria on your hands that do all of the fighting against viruses. So even if you feel content and clean after sanitizing your hands, they won’t stay that way for long – in fact, they’ll become worse and your good bacteria count will be compromised. Plain old soap and water should do it.

3. Exercising… a lot – Even though they say that you should get some form of moderate exercise every day, your body and mind do not need more than three or four days of cardiovascular activity (30-45 minutes per session) a week. These exercises should be done every other day alternating with more mild forms of exercise like Yoga, Pilates, walking, and weight training. The best way to stay toned and energized is to vary your exercise regime and take it easy on your body.

4. Over/Under Sleeping - If you are regularly sleeping for more than 9 hours a night, its not good. It’s also not good if you are sleeping less than 7 hours a night. We need 8 full hours of sleep per night in order to function at our best. We aren’t built to think or process at an optimal level on more than 9 or less than 7 hours of sleep. Too much or too little sleep is bad for your skin, it causes bloating, overeating, confusion, and sometimes depression.

5. Air Conditioning - AC is great, but if you rely on it day and night it is doing you harm. The recycled air can contain bad bacteria, air-born viruses and germs that will in turn give you a cold or flu. If you suffer from allergies the air conditioning can emit particles of dust that can irritate your allergies. Every couple hours, try to turn off the air conditioning and open the windows or go for a walk. Wash your air conditioning filter with warm soapy water and let them air dry once a month. If you work at an office go for a lunch or afternoon break outside in the sun.

6. Buying Organic Food - Organic foods have earned the reputation that they are not processed and more healthy than regular foods. The fact is is that they are more expensive, and may still be heavily processed. Read the labels carefully when you are buying from a health foods store. Organic doesn’t mean healthy. Choose simple items with few ingredients and a low amount of natural sugars, salts, and processed carbohydrates.

Important Questions to ask your Doctor Before Taking a Prescription Drug

When you are prescribed a drug by your doctor, make sure you ask them the right questions in order to see if the drug is necessary to treat your condition. Sometimes drugs can be a simple alternative to a difficult natural therapy, however the prices of prescription drugs can burn a hole in your pocket, and may not be the best therapy for your body.

1. Is drug therapy really needed to treat this problem?

There are many problems that do not need to be treated with prescription drugs. Things like premenstrual pain, and anxiety or depression after bereavement can sometimes be treated without prescription drugs. Over-the-counter (OTC) and balanced exercise, diet, and lifestyle can sometimes treat your condition. Sometimes the proper remedy is spending therapeutic time with family and loved ones. A recent study found that people who suffer from major depression can be helped by facing up to and solving their problems instead of hiding behind antidepressants. Make sure your doctor is certain in recommending the use of prescription medication to prevent your condition from worsening.

2. When did this drug first come on the market?

Recently approved drugs are causing more and more problems for users. Newer drugs tend to come with more side effects and a higher price tag due to drug company marketing. If you are taken off an older drug that you are used to, and put onto a newer drug, be careful. Your doctor may be testing the new drug’s effectiveness on you.

3. What kinds of substances or activities should I avoid when taking this drug?

It’s important to find out as much as you can about a drug before taking it. Sometimes doing everyday things like driving a car or having a glass of wine may not be safe when you are using medication. It is also very important that you ask your doctor if other drugs, prescription or OTC, will react with the drug being prescribed to you. Always tell your doctor about any prescription or non-prescription drugs that you use before taking another drug.

4. What will happen if I don’t take this drug?

To become aware of all possible outcomes, ask your doctor if your condition will worsen over time if you don’t take the drug.

5. Is there a Generic drug that will help me?

Generic drugs tend to be less expensive than brand name drugs. Ask your doctor for the generic brand.

5 Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate

You’ve probably already heard of chocolate improving the mood, but there are more health benefits to chocolate that you may be unaware of. Before you go raiding the candy jar, keep in mind that these health benefits pertain to DARK CHOCOLATE only. That is anything with a cocoa content over 65%. Milk chocolate is probably what you are used to, but if you are interested in eating healthy it might be a good idea to give dark chocolate a try.

1. Good for the Heart - Due to the presence of antioxidants in dark chocolate, studies have found that in individuals with high blood pressure, a stick of dark chocolate a day can lower blood pressure levels. In addition, dark chocolate has been known to lower cholesterol levels by up to 10%.

2. Improves Mood – Dark chocolate stimulates endorphin production which in turn provides the brain with feelings of pleasure. A substance called theobromine which provides you with caffeine-like stimulation is also present in dark chocolate. Dark chocolate contains serotonin which is known to act as an anti-depressant.

3. Low fat - Unlike milk chocolate or white chocolate, dark chocolate contains very little fat that will affect your cholesterol. Of the small amount of fat in dark chocolate, 1/3 of the fats are actually good fats which are healthy for the body. The remaining 2/3rds are made up of a neutral fat, and a saturated fat.

4. Stress Reducer – A study found that eating an ounce of dark chocolate a day for two weeks drastically reduced stress levels in the bodies of people who were feeling highly stressed.

5. Stabilizer – Not only does dark chocolate regulate and stabilize the mood, but it’s also been found to help regulate the body’s metabolism

Mortality Rate From Unintended Injury Rises. Americans Are Poisoning Themselves To Death

Would you be surprised if I told you that in a span of about 6 years (1999-2005) the mortality rate from unintended injury rose by 11% in the United States? Well you should be. Those numbers are almost too high to believe, but the statistics are completely true.

The truth of the matter is we’re slowly killing ourselves. There have been unusually high spikes in poisoning deaths and deaths from falls. The deaths from falling may be just due to older age or simply because someone had a few too many drinks and accidentally fell off a cliff. However, the fact that poisoning deaths increased in dramatic fashion is what really scares me. America, you’ve become one big drug addict.

I’m not saying that drugs (prescription drugs) are bad, many people rely on some of these medications to live. However, when you start taking pills for sleeping, upset stomachs, muscle pain, sneezing, that weird twitch in your eye, etc, it starts to add up. Over medicating is a very real problem in America that often goes overlooked.

When anyone starts taking more drugs than they can remember, there is definitely going to be problems. There is only so much your body can take. It’s kind of like alcohol, sure a drink every so often is okay, but when you go get totally smashed every night for a lengthy period of time then expect there to be some sort of damage to your body. People begin to think that if something isn’t illegal it won’t harm you and that’s where many people are wrong.

My grade 11 teacher told me that North American society is the most medicated society in the world. He couldn’t have been more right. It seems to me that people are just taking pills because they can. If your having trouble sleeping try working out, putting some soft music on don’t pop a pill. America you need some serious rehab. Hopefully the citizens will listen up and give you what you need.
