Which Candles are safe?

With the cold weather dark weather creeping in, its nice to light the house with candles. The scents and flickering lights are somewhat relaxing. Recently, however, there has been talk about candle fumes being unsafe. Most candles are made from oil which is bleached and mixed with dangerous toxins that are harmful to inhale. These candles are called Paraffin candles, and burning them will put toxins and carcinogens (cancer causing substances) into the air you breath. The EPA has recently confirmed that Paraffin candles contain some dangerous chemicals in large quantities that include carcinogens, neurotoxins, and reproductive toxins.

Which candles are safe to burn in the home?

A study presented at the American Chemical Society’s meeting in Washington D.C by R. Massoudi and Amid Hamidi found that the more expensive candles made from beeswax or soy are safer because they do not release harmful chemicals. Lighting one Paraffin candle occasionally will not harm you – but continuous use of paraffin candles for many years may increase the carcinogens that you consume.

It’s worth it to spend more money on Soy or Beeswax candles. They are safer for the environment and to those living in your home. In fact, soy candles have many benefits – the first being that they are not harmful to your health! Soy candles have the capability of lasting up to 50% longer than Paraffin candles, they are not made of foreign oil, they do not contain animal fats, and they are derived from a renewable resource. If you want to live healthy, try switching from Paraffin to Soy!

The Dangers of Everyday Products

Filed under: Uncategorized, cosmetics, dangerous chemicals, makeup, toxins — Amanda @ 1:13 pm

Although we use multiple products every day – including hair products, skin products, and cosmetic products, most of us are unaware of the dangers we face by exposing ourselves to the chemicals and toxins within them.

Deodorant – Deodorant is very acidic therefore it weakens the skin making it vulnerable to penetration. Most deodorants can contain ammonia, formaldehyde and phenol, which have been linked to cause cancer.

Shampoo and conditioner – can contain several mutagen inducing chemicals which are supposedly cancer causing.

Hairspray – has a toxin known as polyvinylpyrrolidine. During studies, researchers found that test rats developed tumours after being exposed to large amounts of this chemical.

Toothpaste – can contain carcinogens (radioactive chemicals which are linked to causing cancer) as well as resorcinol which may cause blood disorders and convulsions.

Mouthwash – can contain ethanol which may be linked to esophageal cancer

Makeup (Mascara, blush, eye shadow, eyeliner) – can contain carcinogens and dangerous toxins like Parabens and Benzoyl Peroxide

It’s not to say that by using these products you will develop cancer, high blood pressure or other severe ailments, however by avoiding these harsh substances you will be taking better care of your body, and better care of the environment. Before buying beauty products, consider checking the ingredient labels for any chemicals which may be harmful to you such as…

Benzoyl Peroxide, diethanolamine, monoethanolamine, triethanolamine, dioxin, imidazolidinyl urea, synthetic colors and pigments, parabens (methyl, butyl, ethyl, propyl), propylene glycol, and butylenes glycol.

Try to buy “green” or Natural products as alternatives to ones which may be harmful to you or to the environment.
