Premature Babies Most at Risk from Phthalates

Many studies were performed to figure out the reason for inflammation in premature babies. It was eventually found that the reason was phthalates. Phthalates are compounds added to plastics in order to make them more flexible.  The number of newborns affected by phthalates clearly displays that babies are being exposed to too much of this material.

Inflammation in a newborn can be extremely dangerous for a baby’s health. It is known to lead to other serious health conditions that can be life threatening for a baby. For example, it could lead to bronchopulmonary dysplasia which is a chronic lung disorder.

It may be difficult for some people to picture how such small children could be exposed to too much plastic; especially when they are being protected by all the people in their lives. To the extent that most premature babies are kept safe and closely monitored in the neonatal intensive care unit of a hospital.

Contrary to what you may believe, it is in the intensive care unit that babies are influenced by the largest amount of phthalates.  This is because in neonatal intensive care, the newborns are hooked up to many different kinds of machines. They are thus exposed to a lot of plastic. The tubing used, for perhaps helping the infant breathe or provide it with nutrition, is what contains the most amount of phthalates.

Unfortunately, every one in eight babies is born prematurely in the United States. The tubing is used to help the child survive. If it weren’t for it; the baby would probably die. Although the equipment is there to save that child’s life, it may just end up harming it. I guess you could say that this is all just the least bit ironic!

Phthalates are also present in many other products.  Some of these products include: baby toys, vinyl flooring, blinds, various packaging, and household cleaners. There are many other products aside from the ones listed that contain phthalates. The first step to take, especially if you have a newborn in the family, is to minimize the amount of phthalates in the house and make your house as safe as possible.

Domperidone, What People Are Using It For

Domperidone is really quite an interesting drug. The actual purpose of the drug isn’t the most interesting thing as it is designed to increase the contractions and movements of the stomach and bowel. However, the potential side effects of the drug and how people use them is what’s interesting.

Yes, almost every drug known to man has some sort of side effect, from coughing or headaches to internal bleeding and death. However, domperidone has some, well mostly one really unusual side effect. When taking the drug it can increase the amount of breast milk in women AND men (at least it doesn’t cause life threatening skin rashes). However, there are some women who do take domperidone in order to increase their breast milk, but the FDA has warned against this because the effects of the drug on newborn babies is unknown. Similarly, the FDA also warns against using domperidone during pregnancy due to the unknown effect on the child while in the womb. However, studies have shown that domperidone has not cause any birth defects in animals.

Even more interesting is hearing about how some men are using domperidone in order to produce breast milk. Why? Good question, I have no idea. I personally would be quite scared if all of a sudden I started producing milk. Not my way of having a good time, but to each their own. However, there are serious side effects that are a very real possibility. Some of the more serious side effects include irregular heart beat, swelling of face, hands, lower legs, and feet, loss of muscle control, and a few others. Also, there is the chance of an overdose which can be fatal.

Regardless, of what gender you are you should definitely talk with you doctor before really deciding on a course of action. Your doctor will know what is best for you and can inform you of all the risks and all the benefits of the drug. From there you can make up your own mind if domperidone is right for you.

Top 4 Myths About Pregnancy and New Mothers

Most of us have probably heard our share of urban legends and old wives tales, but most realize them to be just that, a myth and nothing more. However, many women (and men) hear myths about pregnancy and new mothers. Yet, much like old wives tales, they are completely untrue.

1. The first and most widely believe myth is that sex during pregnancy will harm the baby. The truth is that having sex while pregnant will do no harm to the child and doctors actually encourage a healthy sexual relationship. However, if you are having a high risk pregnancy, have a history of miscarriage or pre-labor, your doctor will let you know if you should make any changes in your sexual activities.

2. Another commonly believed myth is that the position of your belly will indicate your child’s sex. In reality the height or shape of your belly tells nothing about whether your child is a boy or girl. The shape and position of your belly is determined simply by your muscle tone, uterine tone, and the position the baby is in. If you really want to know what the gender of your baby will be go see you doctor and ask him to do an ultrasound.

3. Many women after giving birth believe that breastfeeding will cause weight gain. In truth, the opposite happens. Breastfeeding actually causes weight loss by burning calories, a lot of calories. It is estimated that women can burn about 500 calories a day from just breastfeeding, which is about the same as going on a five mile run. However, it is recommended that new mothers who are breastfeeding should only lose half a pound to a pound a week due to the fact that losing too much weight, too fast is unhealthy for the mother.

4. Myth number 4 is the myth that baby formula is an adequate substitute for breast milk. Although formula has improved, it is still not a replacement for breast milk. The nutrients, hormones, antibodies, and vitamins in the breast milk cannot be replaced by just formula. There have been many studies that show the benefits of breast milk. In fact, breast milk has been proven to lower the risk of developing allergies, infections, diarrhea, and lung disorders when compared to babies who have been given formula.

So there they are, some of the most widely believe myths about pregnancy and new mothers. Hopefully some of this information will help you. Best of luck.
