Those with a healthy body diet are more likely to have a lower blood pressure than those who exercise often. A new study analyzed 35,061 patients between 1990 and 2010. The study tested the importance of cardio respiratory fitness and Body Mass Index on systolic blood pressure.

In the study Body Mass Index was used as a continuous variable. The cardio respiratory fitness was decided by maximal exercise testing which was then put into age and gender categories. The group was made up of 69% men with age average of 46 years. Body Mass Index was responsible for 11 percent of the variance, while exercise was only explained 1 percent of any changes in the systolic blood pressure.

Overall the study found that obesity is essential in foretelling a person’s Systolic Blood Pressure. Weight loss is the best way to keep a normal blood pressure, but after maintaining a healthy weight exercise may also be beneficial.

Many studies were performed to figure out the reason for inflammation in premature babies. It was eventually found that the reason was phthalates. Phthalates are compounds added to plastics in order to make them more flexible.  The number of newborns affected by phthalates clearly displays that babies are being exposed to too much of this material.

Inflammation in a newborn can be extremely dangerous for a baby’s health. It is known to lead to other serious health conditions that can be life threatening for a baby. For example, it could lead to bronchopulmonary dysplasia which is a chronic lung disorder.

It may be difficult for some people to picture how such small children could be exposed to too much plastic; especially when they are being protected by all the people in their lives. To the extent that most premature babies are kept safe and closely monitored in the neonatal intensive care unit of a hospital.

Contrary to what you may believe, it is in the intensive care unit that babies are influenced by the largest amount of phthalates.  This is because in neonatal intensive care, the newborns are hooked up to many different kinds of machines. They are thus exposed to a lot of plastic. The tubing used, for perhaps helping the infant breathe or provide it with nutrition, is what contains the most amount of phthalates.

Unfortunately, every one in eight babies is born prematurely in the United States. The tubing is used to help the child survive. If it weren’t for it; the baby would probably die. Although the equipment is there to save that child’s life, it may just end up harming it. I guess you could say that this is all just the least bit ironic!

Phthalates are also present in many other products.  Some of these products include: baby toys, vinyl flooring, blinds, various packaging, and household cleaners. There are many other products aside from the ones listed that contain phthalates. The first step to take, especially if you have a newborn in the family, is to minimize the amount of phthalates in the house and make your house as safe as possible.

Exercise capacity is defined as the measure of how hard you are able to work out. This is greatly connected with mortality and how long a person will live. Although your exercise capacity naturally depletes with age and the conditions sometimes brought on with age, with regular exercise you can considerably counteract the loss of aerobic capacity.

My grandfather is a great example of an elderly person with a good exercise capacity. Having the responsibility of a dog, my 86 year old grandfather takes his pet on walks 3 times a day. This keeps his body and bones strong for his age, and helps his overall health, in turn lengthening his life.
As you age it is suggested you go from more intense workouts to slower exercises. For example at age 20 you should be able to life heavy weights, and bike uphill, but at age 70 it is only recommended you be able to brisk walk. By the time you’ve hit 80, the exercise decreases to light yard work, for example raking.

A study published in August 2010 showed that it is never too late to start exercising. In the study, 5314 males from the age of 65 to 92 participated in exercise testing at hospitals between 1986 and 2008. Each person was tested on a treadmill and in MET’s (Metabolic Equivalent of Task), which is the measurement of the intensity of aerobic exercise.

After 8 years of follow up, 2137 of the participants died. In those who died, the average exercise capacity was 5.3 METs, while in those still living the average exercise capacity was 6.3 MET’s. For each MET increase there was a 12 percent reduction in the risk of death. In participants with a MET level more than 9.0 had a death risk lowered by 61%.

In a recent study it was found that girls are entering puberty at a much earlier age than ever before. It is hard to believe but, girls even as young as seven are going through puberty nowadays.

The reason for puberty affecting girls at earlier ages seems to be because of ethnicity and BMI (Body mass Index). For example, African-Americans generally entered puberty before Caucasians. Also, those with a higher BMI tended to undergo puberty before girls with a low BMI.

It is also believed that girls influenced by more Endocrine- disrupting compounds (EDCs) which are in a number of everyday products have a greater chance of earlier puberty. Unlike, ethnicity and BMI, EDCs are a risk factor not yet proven.

Earlier puberty has been linked with the development of breast cancer. Research shows that women who had their periods at an early age are at higher risk of suffering from breast cancer. This is based on the fact that many women who currently have breast cancer also got their periods at a young age.
Further research is taking place to figure out what exactly is causing puberty to hit girls at an earlier age. As for now, only precautions can be taken by girls and their parents.

It is recommended that young girls stay fit and healthy as a greater BMI is definitely linked to entering puberty faster. In the United States for example, obesity has greatly increased in children over the years and this is responsible for the current situation.
