How to Get Better Grades in School: Nap for Success

If you’re looking for that extra boost for writing your final exam, try taking a nap. According to a Harvard Medical School study, those that nap and dream about a specific task actually perform that task better when they wake up, compared to those that don’t sleep or sleep, but don’t dream.

The actual study tested various participants who sat in front of a computer screen, looking at a three-dimensional maze. Five hours later, they were told to find a landmark tree after being placed in a random location within the maze. The results found that those that had a nap and remembered dreaming of the task navigated their way to the tree in less time.

While napping can be a useful tool in a students studying arsenal, one has to be careful not to abuse this power. Make sure you don’t nap for too long as you’ll end up forgetting to finish your studying. Make sure you find a time in the day when napping actually works for you. There are many people, myself included, that wake up after a nap and feel awful depending on the time. I prefer to nap at around four or five in the afternoon, but if I take a nap any earlier I don’t want to study and I tend to be very cranky.

Regardless, napping can be very beneficial to those wanting to get every advantage possible going into their exams. Napping will help your brain remember the material you’ve been studying and although I’m not sure, I’m willing to bet that napping helps eliminate some of that tension you feel going into those tests.

The Pillbox – “Rapid Identification, Reliable Information”

The Pillbox, a pill identification search engine, created by the US National Institutes of Health has the ability to help you identify a pill based on the pill’s physical characteristics. This allows you to visually identify the pill which is not only effective but very quick.

Some characteristics used to identify a pill include: shape, color, and size. You could describe almost anything that you see on the pill. This includes numbers, letters or other charcters. Typically this search engine is designed for emergency situations. For example, it could be highly informative for an organization like the Poison Control Centre. As well, the search engine is available for use to everyone. If more information about the drug is needed or the pill was misplaced you could figure out what the drug is and what it does. Pillbox gives information about the ingredients in the pill, the brand name, the generic name, and information about what the pill does.

Identifying the pill is very easy to do. Pillbox displays high resolution pictures of the different pills. The pills are also displayed larger than their actual size so that you can observe any smaller details. This is very important because your search is based solely on what you see.

Although this site is very informative and identifies unknown pills, it is still in development and not currently intended for clinical use. Pillbox still needs to be verified by the different manufacturers of
the pills.

Sunscreen- True or False?

Filed under: sun damage,sunscreen,true or false,Uncategorized,UVA rays,UVB rays — Tanveen @ 11:35 am

Hot, summer days are fast approaching. It’s important to be putting sunscreen on in order to protect yourself. But what’s even more important is buying the right type of sunscreen. A mistake made by many people.

1) A sunscreen with SPF 60 provides two times better protection than a sunscreen with SPF 30.
False.
SPF 30 blocks 97% of UV rays, and SPF 60 only protects against 1 to 1.5% more, which is 98 to 98.5%. Why pay more for an extra 1% of protection. Not only that but
raising the SPF from 30 to 60 results in it having more chemicals.

2) Using an aerosol suncreen is the best way to apply sunscreen to the body because it allows for an equal application.
False.
Most aerosol sunscreens are in fact not as protective as sunscreen you apply manually. This is because as the suncreen is traveling from the container to your body most of the molecules do not land on your skin.

3) Most sunscreens effectively protect against UVB rays, but do not against UVA rays.
True.
Essentially UVB rays are those that cause sunburn, and UVA are those that go deep into you skin and can be responsible for causing skin cancer. In order to make sure you are protected against UVA rays make sure that your sunscreen contains Mexoryl, Avobenzone, Zinc Oxide, or Titanium Dioxide. UVA rays are mch more harmful that UVB rays, so make sure you are protected.

4) A sunscreen with a higher SPF provides protection for a longer period of time.
False.
All sunscreens, despite the SPF or what it says on the package provide sun protection for the same amount of time. You should reapply suncreen after an hour and a half in the sun.

5) I should put sunscreen on my whole body, not only the parts exposed to sun.
True.
Although the parts exposed to the sun like your arms and legs are a little more
important to put sunscreen on. You should put sunscreen on your entire body.
For example, the average cotton T-shirt has an SPF of 5. That may put things in perspective for you.

Important Foods for Women

Fish - Most (wild) fish is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 has health benefits like anti-aging properties, skin improving properties, and cancer preventing properties. Wild fish is also full of vitamin D. Vitamin D is a major immune system booster, and it allows for calcium to be absorbed into the body. Because women are more likely than men to develop osteoporosis, it is important that Women consume more vitamin D. Calcium is useless without vitamin D. More benefits of omega-3s include a reduced risk of breast cancer, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and improved brain function.
Broccoli - The main health benefit of broccoli is that it is an amazing cancer preventing food. It has the ability to neutralize carcinogens that are cancer threats, and they help get rid of cancer-causing toxins by stimulating detoxifying enzymes. One compound found in broccoli has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer and cervical cancer as well as stop the spread of existing cancer. Broccoli is full of folate, a crucial nutrient for pregnant women that helps fetal development and protects against birth defects. Broccoli is also a natural mood booster. Depression is twice as common in women than men and the folate in broccoli has been linked to help fight depression by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. Broccoli can also help with PMS symptoms. Broccoli is a diuretic that helps to reduce bloating in women.

Red Meat - Red meat is full of Iron. The main function of iron is to help transport oxygen via the blood stream and distribute it throughout the body. Its really important that women incorporate iron into their diet because they experience monthly blood loss. Iron can be found in other foods such as eggs, oatmeal, and spinach.

Onions - The health benefits from onions are outstanding. Onions are naturally anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and are a natural blood thinner. Onions are rich in chromium, fiber, and vitamin C, and they also contain vitamin B6 which helps with improving mood, manganese, tryptophan, folate, and potassium. These properties help promote good health and healing. In addition, onions are a cancer-fighting food. Women who consume a lot of onions have been linked to a 25% reduced risk of breast cancer and a 73% reduced risk of ovarian cancer.

The Impact 30 Minutes can have on your Entire Life

“I don’t feel like it,” “I’m too tired,” or “I’m not in the mood right now,” are common excuses we all use to avoid getting up from the television couch. People suffering from depression require even more will power to go out and exercise. However, once a routine is established the benefits are endless. Just 30 minutes a day of exercise will have a major impact on your body, both mentally and physically.

People suffering from depression may not even realize how much of an impact it has on their everyday life. This is why exercise and treating depression is so important. Often those suffering from this disorder lose interest in things that they were previously interested in. This is a huge problem because it basically means that everything that was important before is no longer important. Furthermore, depression is an example of a medical disorder that can be positively influenced by exercise as Doctors claim that exercising is very advantageous in terms of dealing with it. Exercise is an antidepressant with no negative side effects. Take advantage of it!

There are many products available that can treat depression. However in order for those drugs to be of advantage physical activity is a necessity. Examples include: Celexa/Citalopram, Effexor XR/Venlafaxine Hcl, Paxil/Paroxetine, and Zoloft/Sertraline.

In general, exercise is extremely beneficial for all age groups. It helps cope with stress, and can make you feel much more happy and relaxed. A study claims that comparatively “Individuals who exercise report fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression, and lower levels of stress and anger” than those that do not exercise regularly. Not only does it improve your mental stability but also increases physical wellness which is a huge problem with Americans today.

Coffee, Good or Bad?

Coffee is what tons of people rely on for a morning wake up zing. Coffee can be used to reduce hangovers, keep people awake, and for other things, but is it really good for you?

Benefits of Coffee

Coffee can prevent Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, and liver Cirrhosis.

Coffee can lower your risk of having type 2 diabetes (this is more significant in men (lowered by 50% chance) than women (only lowered by 30% chance).

Risks of Coffee

Caffeine is one of the most dehydrating substances you can consume. When drinking coffee it is important to consume three times as much water as you drink coffee to stay hydrated and healthy.

The long lasting effects of coffee are irritable bowel syndrome, heartburn, and/or osteoporosis.
Short term effects of coffee are shakiness, difficulty concentrating, and an increased risk of heart attack.

Coffee is dangerously addicting. Because caffeine gives you a short rush of energy once it ends and you have slowed to your normal pace or slower it is tempting to have another cup for another jolt of energy. Being addicted to coffee can make you immune to its effects and you will need to consume more and more caffeine to receive that jolt of energy. The long and short effects of caffeine addictions can be serious.

Maple Syrup Found to Slow the Growth of Cancerous Cells

Maple syrup, that sweet liquid that is so often associated with Canada, may be extremely beneficial to our health. According to a new study that was published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, maple syrup may significantly slow the growth rate of cancer cells, depending on the type of cancer, and despite its sweet taste, it may reduce the risk of diabetes.

Seeram, from the University of Rhode Island, who presented his findings at the American Chemical Society annual meeting in San Francisco, found 13 antioxidants that are believed to possess anti-cancer, anti-bacterial and anti-diabetic properties in maple syrup. These antioxidants were previously not known to be present in the syrup.

Abscisic acid, which is a phytohormone that is known to stimulate insulin release through the pancreatic cells, is found quite abundantly in maple syrup. The release of this insulin increases the sensitivity of fat cells to the insulin, creating a powerful defense to combat metabolic syndrome and diabetes.

Researchers at the Universite du Quebec also conducted a study on the effects of maple syrup. Their findings suggested that prostate and lung cancers may have the growth rate of the cancerous cells slowed tremendously by maple syrup. In fact, their results show that maple syrup may be more effective than blueberries, broccoli, tomatoes, and carrots. Other cancers, such as breast, colon, and brain also experienced a decrease in growth rate, but not to the same extent as prostate and lung cancer.
