8 Tricks to Get Your 8 Glasses of Water a Day

Nowadays, many of us are extremely busy throughout the day. There’s problems you have to worry about every day, work, kids, and who knows what else. It’s very easy to see how many Americans don’t drink enough water on a daily basis. Water is extremely important for us and can even help in weight loss. Yet, every day more and more Americans are forgetting the importance of water or are just not getting their daily intake. However, there are some tricks that can help make sure that you can get those 8 glasses of water each day.

1. Start Off Slow – You don’t need to go from drinking 2 glasses of water to drinking 8 glasses of water a day, right from the start. Ease your way into creating a healthy habit. Increase you consumption of water a glass a day or every two days until you reach 8 glasses.

2. Not All At Once – Just because you should drink 8 glasses of water a day doesn’t mean it has to be done all at once. Drink a little bit every so often. Have a glass in the morning, take a bottle of water to work, spread your drinking throughout the day.

3. Don’t Be Boring – You can add different things to your water to change things up a bit. Some fruit can be added for a great taste and will keep you interested.

4. Ice Ice Baby! – Keep your water cold. I find it feels better, especially after a good workout, not to mention it takes more effort for your body to regulate the temperature and results in you burning calories.

5. Think About It – Next time you go to grab your favorite soda think about what you’re putting into your body. Coca Cola can remove rust from nails and is often used to clean blood from highway accidents… just something to think about.

6. Get a Timer – If you are really having a difficult time getting your water set a timer. It sounds kind of weird, but it works.

7. Be Prepared – Have your water accessible. For some people it is as simple as walking over to the tap and turning it on, others like to filter their water. Whichever way you prefer make sure you always have some water that is ready and easily accessible.

8. Get Sneaky – Try eating some water enriched foods such as watermelon. This will allow you to get a glass or two of water without you actually having to drink it.

Stress Relievers

Stress is a silent killer. It eats away at you and makes you feel like your life is full of unfix-able, pressing problems. 99 percent of all illnesses are related to stress. Stress is also related to high blood pressure, hair loss, depression, memory loss, heart attack, stroke, weight gain, heart disease, cancer and many other conditions. When you become stressed, your body reacts in different ways. Your nervous system releases hormones which increase your heart rate, raise your blood pressure, and increase the sugar levels in your bloodstream. Stress can cause you to eat more or less food than you usually eat; this may result in heartburn, acid reflux, nausea, stomachache, or diarrhea. In men high levels of stress can impair sperm production and cause impotence. In women stress can decrease sexual desire or cause irregular menstrual cycles.
To reduce stress levels, try these tips!

Stop procrastinating! – Most often procrastination is the epicenter of the cause for stress. How many times have you realized the day of a big project, meeting, test (or other activity requiring preparation) that you are completely unprepared and spend the minutes leading up to the activity cramming and freaking out. Breaking procrastination is extremely difficult but can be done. Set an alarm each night and put aside 20 minutes (or any amount of time) to work on a task instead of having to complete it in one go. Do not look at your task as one huge assignment, rather break it into small portions to be easier dealt with.

Music therapy – Listening to soft music can be therapeutic and help relieve stress. Listening to “black music” can increase your stress levels rather than help them. Black music includes metal, rap, hard rock, etc. Blues, jazz, pop, country, and classical music are more positive choices of music to relax to.

Write a to-do list – Writing a to-do list will help you to see that you do not actually have as much on your plate as it seems. It may also help that you can plan and organize when you have free time and how you can arrange every task into your schedule. Seeing things in writing generally helps organize the mumbo-jumbo in your head into understandable terms.

Listen To Your Heart Keep Your Heart Healthy

The heart is a muscle that many of us take for granted each day. Yes, we recognize its great importance and the stressful job it has pumping blood throughout the body, but do we really care? You could say “of course we care; if the heart stops we die.” However, saying we care and showing we care are two completely different things. Every single day people abuse their hearts; sometimes we harm our hearts on multiple occasions every day. We ignore its needs and expect it to put up with our neglect, but just like a relationship gone wrong, eventually it won’t put up with your actions.

However, in order to maintain a strong and healthy relationship with your heart, there are some things you can do.

1. Don’t Smoke – Smoking is the leading cause of heart disease. Try quitting if you do smoke as it increases blood pressure and the tendency for blood to clot.

2. Get Active – I cannot stress the importance of exercise, not only for your heart, but your entire body. Just 30 minutes a day of physical activity can help you reduce the risk of heart disease.

3. Eat Healthy Fats – Healthy fats will help raise your good cholesterol and lower your overall cholesterol. Make sure to limit your unhealthy fats as this can lead to high cholesterol (bad) which can lead to blockages in the arteries which may lead to a heart attack or stroke.

4. Get Some Fiber – Fiber is extremely beneficial to maintaining a healthy heart. Make sure to get at least 25 grams of fiber a day.

5. Watch out for Sugars and Salts – Limiting your intake of sugar and salt can have an incredible effect on your heart. When you eat a significant amount of sugars, you are more likely to develop diabetes and heart disease. Too much salt can result in high blood pressure and heart disease.

The Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Health experts believe that omega-3 fatty acids are one of the most important nutrients that is missing from the average American’s diet. This omega-3 deficiency has been extensively studied and may be the reason why there are so many of us suffering from heart disease, cancers, and brain disorders. It has even been discovered that when a proper amount of omega-3 is regularly present in the body, these diseases and disorders tend to become less severe, and sometimes vanish completely.
Anti-Aging

New research shows that omega-3s slow down the cell-aging process. This means that omega-3 fatty acids can protect against skin aging on a cellular level, making your skin appear younger and healthier. By incorporating more fish into your diet or using omega-3 supplements, you can slow down the aging process and feel a healthy, more energetic glow.

Acne and Skin Disorders

Omega-3 fish oil is a natural inflammatory substance. One of the main characteristics of acne is that it causes red, swollen spots on the skin. A a balanced, regular intake of omega-3 will help lessen the severity of the acne inflammation and reduce the look of acne and other skin disorders related to inflammation. In addition, the Omega-3 fish oils will improve the look of hair and nails.

Mental health problems

People who have mental imbalances such as depression, anxiety, mood swings, bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, Alzheimer’s disease, ADHD and ADD have been linked to a deficiency in omega-3 fats. Omega-3 fatty acids can naturally improve the function and balance of hormones in your body.

Cancer

Although it seems like Omega-3 can do anything, it cannot cure cancer, but increased intakes of omega-3 fats have been found to help fight against and help prevent cancers such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and ovarian cancer. More studies are currently being conducted in this area.

Stop Hitting the Snooze Button

The most tempting thing you have to face each and every day: the infamous snooze button. Just another 5, 10, or 15 minutes of sleep which people actually have come to believe will make a difference. People have actually become addicted to hitting the snooze button and have adjusted to a routine where hitting the snooze button once, twice, or six times is just part of their morning schedule. This is unhealthy and there are other ways to solve this problem.

1. Change your schedule – If you are used to 6 hours of sleep, then try to sleep those six hours half an hour earlier. Also, try to avoid any distractions too near the time when you are planning to fall asleep. Television, reading, playing computer games, etc. keep your brain active and will make it more difficult to fall asleep right away, thus making you more tired in the morning.

2. Move your alarm clock – You have probably heard this one before, moving your alarm clock across the room (even for a short period of time) will help you to be motivated to get out of bed to turn off your alarm clock. Once you have gotten up and moved across the room to turn off your alarm clock, stay standing. Avoid sitting down for 10 minutes after you have woken up. If you normally have a shower in the morning, try to wake yourself with a cold blast (as unpleasant as this may sound, it helps).

3. Get into a powernap routine – Having a short 30 minute to 45 minute nap is just as rejuvenating than two hour nap. In a normal 6 to 8 hour sleep period your body gets approximately an hour and a half of REM sleep. This kind of sleep is what keeps your brain sharp. Although REM sleep is usually stage 5 of sleep, you can force the REM sleep stage during nap time if you have scheduled short naps. Getting your body into this mode is very difficult but once you adjust it is worth it. The extreme method of this is called the Uberman’s Sleep Schedule.

4. Eat breakfast – Yes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. How can a flashlight work when there is no battery? It is the same for your brain, if you consume no food (energy) you cannot function optimally.

5 Quick Pick-me-ups

Bananas - These are serious mood boosters due to their mix of vitamins A, B6, and C; fibre, tryptophan, potassium, phosphorous, iron, protein, and good carbohydrates. The natural sugars in a banana will give you a quick boost of energy while the fibre will help you sustain that energy. This will prevent a drop in your energy and mood and high blood sugar levels. Vitamin B6 helps the brain convert tryptophan into serotonin, the mood boosting hormone. If you’re feeling down and need a snack have a banana.

Body posture – Have you ever noticed that you have a perkier step when you are happy? Happy people walk fast, stand tall and are full of life and energy. Take notice of the way you carry yourself. Try not to shuffle your feet, walk slowly and slouch – this will make you appear lifeless and pessimistic. If your feeling sluggish, taking big steps, standing tall, and walking faster will help you look and feel optimistic and energetic.

Sleep – By getting less sleep than we need (for example – 6 hours instead of 7), our brains tend to lean towards negative thoughts instead of positive ones. An article in the Journal of American Medical Association found that even one night of insufficient sleep can negatively affect our mood. Even though its not easy to get those extra couple hours of sleep, your mood depends on it. Shut off the computers and televisions and get the sleep your brain needs.

Sunlight – getting fresh air and exercise is the best way to boost your mood and your energy. The natural combination on a regular basis will work every time to pick you up. Take long deep breaths as you go on a brisk walk and reap the mood-lifting benefits of exercise. Remember to wear sunscreen when spending long periods of time outside in order to protect against sun damage.

Walnuts - These contain a lot of healthy components that help improve your mood. Walnuts have omega-3s, vitamin B6, tryptophan, protien, and folate. Omega-3s have health benefits including cancer preventing and acne preventing benefits, and have been linked with better moods and lower depression rates. A study by Harvard Medical School found that omega-3s and uridine (another component found in walnuts) worked in the same way as antidepressant medications. The average dose of omega-3 oils is 1,000 mg per day. You can get the same amount in half an ounce of walnuts.

Ways to Whiten your Teeth at Home

White teeth are something everyone craves, but are difficult to get. You may care for your teeth, brush 3 times a day, use mouthwash, and floss, but you can still have yellowed teeth. Teeth do have a natural yellow tint because of calcium, but there are ways to reduce any other yellowing of the teeth.

Baking soda – Use baking soda in addition to toothpaste or gargle with a baking soda and water mixture. Baking soda is good for many other cleaning processes. It can also be used as deodorant, used to put out fires, and used to heal sores or bug bites quicker.

Lemon Juice – Lemons are naturally acidic and can be used to remove stains and whiten your enamel. Do not use lemon juice on a daily basis as it may damage your enamel. It is recommended to use lemon juice mixed with baking soda as a once-a-week whitening treatment. This treatment may take up to 2 months to show results.

Peroxide – Numerous teeth whitening products have peroxide as an ingredient. Diluting peroxide with water and rinsing your mouth with this solution will keep your mouth clean, your breath fresh, and naturally whiten your teeth. You may experience a burning sensation in your gums, but you will have cleaner teeth. Do not swallow this solution. Another option is to dip a Q-tip or cotton swab in the diluted peroxide and rub your teeth with it.

Other methods of whitening your teeth include making a paste from strawberries and brushing your teeth with the mixture, brushing with wood ash, or making your own toothpaste from a mixture of the above ingredients.

Early Warning Signs of Heart Disease Showing in Young Children

Where did we go wrong? We still haven’t learned from our bad eating habits and now, we are teaching our children worse habits than our own. Kids shouldn’t have to worry about developing a stroke or a heart attack. They should be outside playing. Yet, here we are, 2010, and we still can’t get it through our thick skulls. Eat healthy or at least eat healthier.

A study conducted on 1-17 year olds was very distressing to me. 40 percent of the children that were classified as obese were between the ages of 3 and 5. Children who are heavier in weight had elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. CRP is an inflammatory marker that many experts believe to show the amount of risk a person has of developing heart disease and stroke.

I am so surprised that with all the information available, many parents still choose to teach their children bad eating habits. This isn’t like going out to McDonalds once and a while, but going to McDonalds multiple times every week. When children start showing significant signs of developing a heart attack or stroke you know something went wrong. At this point it is almost as if the parents are killing their children.

I think it’s time to take some responsibility and really reinforce some much needed rules. Eat healthier and get outside every so often. Instead of always playing baseball on a video game system, try going out and playing catch with a friend. Get your kids involved in sports. Don’t let obesity consume your child.
