Swine Flu Myths You Need To Know
When you think of myths you probably think of something like Sasquatch or some other random creature that has never really been found. Most of the people who report actual "sightings" of such creatures are quite... interesting individuals. For the most part I'm sure that alcohol or some other substance was involved.
However, when it comes to H1N1, or commonly known as Swine Flu, there are many myths that have recently spread faster than the virus itself. Some of these myths though, unlike Sasquatch, can actually result in serious consequences.
1.Only People With Weak Immune Systems Die From Swine Flu- While having a weak immune system doesn't help defend against the virus, people with strong, healthy immune systems have also been victims of fatal Swine Flu attacks.
2.If You Get Swine Flu You'll ALWAYS Get A Fever- While Swine Flu and the regular seasonal flu do share many of the same symptoms, and fever is one of them, you do not ALWAYS get a fever. In fact only about half of the people with Swine Flu actually experience a fever.
3.Swine Flu Is Just A Mild Form Of The Flu, It Doesn't Even Kill As Many People As Seasonal Flu- The death toll isn't as large as seasonal flu, but the Swine flu is fatal. The main problem with this myth is that seasonal flu is more likely to cause death in the elderly, whereas Swine Flu targets the young, who should have a stronger immune system.
4.I Can Avoid Swine Flu By Taking Vitamins, Wearing A Mask, Washing My Hands, And Drinking A Lot Of Fluids- This may HELP avoid the swine flu, but it isn't necessarily the best and most effective way to prevent Swine Flu. Getting vaccinated is the most effective way of defending against Swine Flu. However, don't just stop doing things like washing your hands regularly as this cuts down on the transmission of Swine Flu.
5.I Don't Have To Worry About Swine Flu Now That There's A Vaccine- Yes, getting vaccinated is the most effective may to prevent Swine Flu, however it does not GUARANTEE that you will not get Swine Flu. Take precautionary measures to avoid transmission.
6.If Swine Flu Hasn't Become Deadlier By Now, It Never Will- Nobody knows what the virus will do. It could stay in its present form forever, but it could just as easily change into a deadlier virus. The only thing we can do is try to limit the transmission of Swine Flu, and be prepared if it does change. You shouldn't just expect the best-case scenario. It's better to be ready for the worst outcome and have nothing change than expect the best and have the virus transform into something like the Spanish Influenza that killed millions.

Heart Risks Found In 20% of Teens
Did you know that 1 out of every 5 students in Grade 9 have at least one major risk factor for heart disease and stroke? The recent Canadian study shows just how fast teen health is declining.
The study showed an increase in cardiovascular risk factors since 2002. However, the most alarming statistics is that the study reported that 13% of teenagers are obese and 16% had high blood cholesterol levels! Remember this is in Canada (Only around 30 million people, whereas the United States has about ten times the number of people).
Obviously there is a huge problem here. My thoughts would be to implement a more rigorous physical education (P.E) course/make P.E mandatory from middle school all the way through high school. Also, remove junk food from cafeteria's and put in healthier snacks. The kids will complain, but honestly it must be done. Additionally, as part of the P.E curriculum, spend a week, at least, on nutrition and the importance of exercise. These kids need to have this knowledge drilled into their minds so it because second nature to them. Somethings need to change, and change quickly.

Get In Line For The H1N1 Vaccine
Yes, the vaccine is here, but you might have to wait a little while before you can get it. The line ups for the H1N1 vaccine could have a person convinced that a big name musical group has just come to town. That or everyone went to the amusement park and the best roller coaster broke down.
How bad are the lines? Well lets put it this way, hundreds actually "camped out" and waited for doors to open. Much like I plan to do when the next Call of Duty comes out (man I can't wait for Modern Warfare 2). Now I'm not sure how smart it is to wait outside in the freezing cold, but these people definitely have determination. And I admire determination.
For a long time many people have seemed divided on the topic of the effectiveness, and the necessity of a vaccine, but as anyone can see, there are many people that have bought into the "Swine Flu Scare," but who can blame them. Even I'm still debating whether or not I should get vaccinated.
If you do plan on receiving the vaccine I offer the best of luck to you, and I hope you don't have to stay outside very long. I also hope the vaccine works for you. Getting sick is just not fun.

Food For The Flu
Well, if you haven't noticed the weather has been getting a lot colder and that means flu season is just around the bend. Many people expect that this flu season will be significantly worse than previous ones due to Swine flu still being active.
No one likes being sick, well except that one guy from Ferris Beuller's Day Off, and there are indeed some ways to keep yourself from getting sick. Most of these you probably know already, wash your hands, get plenty vitamin D and C, etc. However, there are some foods that you can eat to help keep you healthy, some you might have never thought of.
Yogurt- Yogurts will help you maintain those pro-biotic functions. Pro-biotics help keep your good bacteria together and diseases and flu away.
Garlic- Garlic is really quite the super food. Although it may result in giving you some bad breath garlic will help you fight off bacterial infections.
Oats and Barley- Oats and Barely contain a significant amount of fiber that contains antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Consuming a lot of oats or barely will lessen your chances of getting a disease/flu. They also help speed up the healing process and boost your immune system.
Chicken Noodle Soup- Many of the items in chicken noodle soup help heal and prevent sickness. The soup can thin mucus membranes and provide your body with amino acids that block the inflamed immunity cells that cause flu symptoms.
Sweet Potatoes- Sweet potatoes contain a lot of vitamin A which helps you skin feel soft. However, vitamin A can also help protect your body on a whole as well. So why not go ahead and try some sweet potatoes.
Make sure you try to stay active and exercise. Physical activity can help boost your immune system. However, remember to dress appropriately and if you go to a gym, wash your hands after. Vitamin supplements can also be a good option.

Which Candles are safe?
With the cold weather dark weather creeping in, its nice to light the house with candles. The scents and flickering lights are somewhat relaxing. Recently, however, there has been talk about candle fumes being unsafe. Most candles are made from oil which is bleached and mixed with dangerous toxins that are harmful to inhale. These candles are called Paraffin candles, and burning them will put toxins and carcinogens ( cancer causing substances) into the air you breath. The EPA has recently confirmed that Paraffin candles contain some dangerous chemicals in large quantities that include carcinogens, neurotoxins, and reproductive toxins. Which candles are safe to burn in the home? A study presented at the American Chemical Society's meeting in Washington D.C by R. Massoudi and Amid Hamidi found that the more expensive candles made from beeswax or soy are safer because they do not release harmful chemicals. Lighting one Paraffin candle occasionally will not harm you - but continuous use of paraffin candles for many years may increase the carcinogens that you consume. It's worth it to spend more money on Soy or Beeswax candles. They are safer for the environment and to those living in your home. In fact, soy candles have many benefits - the first being that they are not harmful to your health! Soy candles have the capability of lasting up to 50% longer than Paraffin candles, they are not made of foreign oil, they do not contain animal fats, and they are derived from a renewable resource. If you want to live healthy, try switching from Paraffin to Soy! New Treatment for ADHD
Conventional stimulant medications to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) such as Ritalin and Adderall are prescribed to millions of children in north America who suffer from ADHD, however although these medications may work for some, others suffer with long term mental and physical effects. These effects may cause the use of other medications just to deal with the side effects such as sleep disturbances, weight loss, mood disorders and appetite loss. Recent studies have shown that alternative medications are available to treat ADHD that will not cause long term and short term side effects. Transcendental meditation is the alternative. In combination with ADHD medications, transcendental meditation has reduced symptoms in ADHD patients. 10 minute daily techniques of meditation and relaxation by sounds and mantras have reduced the stress levels of ADHD patients by up to 50%. In addition, those using this technique have also noticed less side effects and improved behavior. What Should The Penalty Be For Knowingly Transmitting HIV?
What should the penalty be for knowingly transmitting the HIV virus? Honestly, I'm not sure. I've heard all different sorts of ideas, some too harsh, others not harsh enough. But everyone has an opinion as I've come to learn. Sometimes, I find I forget that and think my opinion is the only one that matters, but that's only because I believe so passionately about my opinion. But this kind of a question is one even I can't come to a final answer on.
When you transmit the HIV virus it's like pointing a gun at someone's head. But that gun only has one bullet in it. You know that it will go off, but you don't know when. HIV cause AIDS, an incurable and very deadly disease. The progress made in fighting HIV/AIDS has come a very long way and vaccines are being created and tested. Hopefully one of those will work. But as of right now there is no cure. People who contract the deadly virus sometimes die within just a short while after receiving HIV. Others can live for years and years, thanks to medications. But what happens when someone decides to go around and spread the virus on purpose?
Some people argue that the guilty person should only receive a light punishment because they also have the HIV virus and are also condemned to the same inevitable fate. Others say that what that person has done is just the same as 1st degree murder and they should be given the life sentence. Extremists believe that the person spreading the infection has condemned one person to death so in return he/she should be put to death as well.
While I don't agree with the death penalty I do see the logic there. The eye for an eye kind of treatment. However, if I had my way then the guilty person would receive a life sentence, in solitary confinement. This still punishes the person for causing irreparable harm to another human being, limits the human-to-human contact, but still lets the person live out the remainder of their life. While serving their sentence maybe they will realize the severity of their actions. I'm open to suggestions though and would love to here what other people think on the matter. What kind of punishment, if any, would you give someone who knowingly transmitted the HIV virus?

Kava Kava, The Natural Anxiety Reducer
Kava or Piper Methsyticum is a tall shrub that is part of the pepper family that grows in the South Pacific islands. The root which is used medicinally has been traditionally chewed or made into a drink is available in capsule, tablet, or liquid extract.
Most commonly people use Kava to help treat with their anxiety and insomnia. However, Kava can cause sedation, and when taking high amounts, intoxication may also occur. There have actually been quite a few studies on the effects of Kava. Most have shown that Kava does appear to be effective in treating anxiety. However, the effects are generally mild if taken as directed.
However, there have been some things that should be known. The FDA issued a warning about Kava in 2002. There have also been a list of some rather troubling side effects. Kava has been linked with liver conditions including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and even liver failure. However, these liver reactions are thought to be due to pre-existing liver disease.
There are some other side-effects and drug interactions that have been reported with Kava. Remember before you try Kava to talk to you doctor first.

A 24 Pack of Birth Control Is More Effective Than The Regular 21 Pack
According to a recent study women taking a 24-day regimen of oral contraceptives leads to fewer cases of unexpected pregnancy.
With many women now taking birth control into their hands oral contraceptives have become a very popular way to prevent pregnancy. However, new data suggests that the normal 21 pack of oral contraceptives isn't as effective as the newer 24 pack (There are also some women who take the oral contraceptive for 28 days or longer to prevent or severely limit menstration) . The 21 pack of oral contraceptive is still efficient, in fact most range from having a failure rating of only 1-2%. Although 1-2% doesn't sound bad, the 24 pack of oral contraceptives have a failure rating of just under 1%. Sometimes just that little bit extra is what makes the real difference.
Why do three days more make a difference? Dr. Jüergen Dinger of the Center for Epidemiology and Health Research in Berlin explains that the success of a 24-day regimen "can be explained by three days of additional oral contraceptive exposure, but also by the long half-life of drospirenone, which, at 30 hours, is much longer than most of the other progesterones." For those of you that don't understand what the good doctor said let me give it a shot. Having a 24 -day regimen increases the amount of time your body is continuously receiving the contraceptive. Also the drospirenone, which is one ingredient that helps prevent birth control, stays in your body longer and breaks down slower than other progesterones. Hope that helps a bit.
Whether or not your choose the 24 pack oral contraceptive is up to you, it's your body and your choice. This is just to give some people the information so they can decide if the specific risks of birth control are worth it.

Cell phone Radiation: Tumors
Cell phones have recently been considered as the biggest public health issue since tobacco. Science research has uncovered the risks of cell phone use. They have been suspicious that radiation from cell phones and other wireless devices can cause brain tumors, harm blood cells, and even damage DNA. A major study by Dr. David Carpenter showed that people who use cell phones double their risk of developing brain cancer and acoustic neuromas. Those who start using a cell phone before the age of 20 were more than five times as likely to develop brain cancer. When you use a cell phone, 70% of the energy (including radiation waves) from the phone is transmitted and absorbed into your head. This may alter the natural electrical activity in the brain for up to an hour after cell use. Children are at the highest risk of radiation. A child's brain is not fully developed, and their skull thickness is on average 1 1/2 mm thinner than an adults. This means that the electromagnetic radiation (EMR) is more dangerous to a child because the EMR absorption rate is higher. Bluetooth and other hands-free headsets are just as bad. These devices require more energy and have higher EMR. A new product called Blue Tube Headset was made specifically to minimize EMR. It's designed to keep EMR emitting devices as far away from your head as possible, while minimizing the radiation emitted through the device. To minimize EMR, try to reduce your cell phone/ iPhone use, use a land line when possible, turn your cell phone off when it's not in use, keep you cell phone away from your body, and use safe headset technology!
