5 Cures for 5 Common Ailments
AcneMost dermatologists say that acne is "un-curable", however, there are things you can do to drastically reduce the appearance of your breakouts. Try using Face Doctor Soap twice a day as an alternative to Proactive and Phisoderm products. It is a medicated soap that also contains herbal ingredients to keep your skin free of oil and pimples. StressStress is a big one for most of us. If relaxation techniques don't work for you, try eating a more healthy and balanced diet. Regular exercise will also release chemicals in your body that will make you feel more relaxed and content. Try taking multivitamins to ensure you are getting all of the vitamins and minerals you need. HeadachesHeadaches can be caused by a number of things - stress, dehydration, or for coffee addicts, a lack of caffeine. Try having a glass of cold water and sitting or lying down. If that doesn't do the trick, take a couple of Tylenol's, Advil's, or another form of Ibuprophen. Cold soresBelieve it or not, if you suffer from cold sores, you've picked up the contagious ailment for life. The most successful treatment for cold sores is a medicated lip ointment like Abreva or another topical lip analgesic. FatigueMany people experience fatigue during the day when they are having dietary insufficiencies. It's important for many young men and women to get the iron they need in order to prevent anemia by eating foods high in iron like beef, spinach, and nuts. There are also iron supplements available to ensure you are getting the correct amount of iron your body needs. Back to School Eye Exams
A recent study has shown that 86% of children start school in September without ever having their vision tested at the optometrist. This is a serious issue because if students cannot see correctly, they cannot learn - and a survey by the American Optometric Association showed that one in four students have a visual impairment. Optometrist and American Optometric Association’s learning specialist Dr. Michael Early said in a press release "Because a child's vision may change frequently, regular eye and vision care is crucial to a student's classroom success. Unfortunately, most parents are not including eye exams as a part of their child’s back-to-school health check-up." The association also stated that 60% of children labelled as problem learners may really have undetected vision problems that are sometimes falsely diagnosed as attention deficit disorder, or at tention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Children are usually expected to have a vision check when they are first starting school and beginning to read. The American Optometric Association suggests that children have their vision assessed when they are 6 months old, again when they are three years old, and once every two years after that. It has been found that treatment is more likely to be successful if the patient is at an early age. Some signs of visual impairment in children are: Lack of attention or concentration, day dreaming, they complain about frequent headaches, they have poor handwriting, they skip words while reading or use a finger to follow the words while reading, they become clumsy, they turn or tilt their head when looking at something, they have itchy eyes, they have dry eyes, they blink frequently, or they squint when looking at objects too far from them or too close to them. If you notice your child is having problems with their vision, arrange for an appointment with an optometrist in your area. 5 Warning Signs Men Shouldn't Ignore
Well let us get straight to the point here, men are stubborn. It is hard for some of us to admit it, but it is very true. Men tend to avoid going to the doctor if they experience some... well let's say some sort of discomfort or irregularity. Women on the other hand tend to go to the doctor as soon as they get something like a headache or a stomach ache, well maybe not exactly like that, but they tend to visit the doctor if they notice something that is irregular and could pose a health threat.
Men (yes, myself included), don't really like going to the hospital very much and tend to put off some very troubling warning signs. The problem is the more macho you are (or the more macho you act) the less likely you are to go to the hospital. However, many men experience some warning signs that can be dangerous even fatal in some cases.
1. Chest pain: Well this would seem like a pretty obvious sign that basically comes out with a baseball bat and hits you saying "GO TO THE DOCTOR, RIGHT NOW!!!" However, the truth of the matter is that any men decide to just ignore it. Chest pain can be a sign of heart attack so next time you should probably get it checked out.
2. A big belly: It is true that when men get in relationships and/or get married they tend to put on a few pounds, but a big belly may be a sign of something else. Belly fat could indicate that a man has low testosterone levels, and low testosterone can increase the risk of diabetes and coronary artery disease.
3. An unenthusiastic penis: Yes, impotence can just be purely psychological, but it also could be a sign that a man has cardiovascular disease. If the arteries that supply blood to the penis aren't working properly, those that supply blood to the heart and brain might not be working so well either. Men that have erectile dysfunction should try to talk to their doctors about more than getting that little blue pill.
4. More frequent urination: frequent urination may be a sign of prostatitis, or inflammation of the prostate gland. If you get up in the middle of the night to urinate, especially more than once then you might want to tell your doctor about it.
5. Prescription drug addiction: Some people that get hooked to prescription medication don't even realize they are addicted, and once you get addicted it is probably a pretty good indicator that you should stop. Addiction to anything can be very serious, but when you start popping Vicoden like Pez from a Pez dispenser (Much like Dr. House from the television show that shares the same name) then you should hopefully know you've got a problem.

Why Canadian Style Health Care Isn’t As Bad As Many Think
Well as the debate over health care goes on, I would just like to talk about the subject of Canadian health care. For some reason it has been brought up in the American debate and has been placed in the same category as euthanasia, and Communism (not just normal Communism, Communism during the 60's and 70's). This is probably due to the huge misrepresentation that has been given to Canadian health care.
Shona Holmes went to the United States to take part in an advertising campaign that opposed the idea of health care reform. She claimed that she would have died without American treatment. Truth is, she panicked and ran south even though she could have been treated her and still been perfectly fine (and saved a lot of money). Holmes is one of those, for lack of a better/less vulgar word, stupid people. I know, Canadian health care isn't perfect and she is entitled to her own opinion, but Canadian health care is much better then told.
It offers aid to anyone and doesn't refuse to treat someone when they're dying because of money issues. Apparently in Canada human life is more important than money. American health care bankrupts people faster than Usain Bolt running the 100 meter. The actual reality of the matter is that Americans are ordering drugs FROM Canada. Sometimes prescription drugs can cost up to 70% less from Canadian pharmacies! So what's so bad about the Canadian health care system?

5 Ways to Naturally Reduce Acne
There are lots of us who suffer from moderate to severe breakouts on a daily basis. If you are reluctant to try expensive skin products like Proactive, or Phisoderm and Neutrogena aren't working for you, try these 5 easy steps to clearer skin. 1. Wash - You must wash your face twice a day EVERY day no matter what. Use a mild soap and warm water to free your skin of oils and dirt. An acne soap product that I personally recommend is Face Doctor soap. I kid you not - it works wonders on moderate breakouts if used twice a day. 2. Don't touch - Try to avoid touching your face. There's a lot of oil on your fingers and touching you face can transfer these oils to your skin and clog your pores.
3. Stop Popping! - Despite what you think, popping pimples does not make them better. In fact, it will cause them to become enflamed, larger, and could possibly scar. The bacteria and oils on your hand will disturb the breakout.
4. Drink water - If you try cutting out all beverages except water for an entire week, you will notice a difference in the appearance of your skin. It's a classic skin care remedy. 5. Eat Healthy - The healthier you are, the healthier your skin will be. Eat foods high in fibre such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Try to stay away from junk food and caffeine. Daily exercise will also keep you feeling healthy. Heroin To Treat... Well, Heroin Addicts
A recent Canadian study has shown that treating heroin addicts WITH heroin is a much more effective treatment than oral methadone. Now, I'm almost positive that anyone could have just assumed that heroin would be a better treatment, it is what they are addicted to after all. The real point in this study is probably made in the amount of addicts that stay in treatment.
88% of addicts being treated with diacetylmorphine (the active ingredient in heroin) stayed in treatment for at least 12 months whereas, only 54% of addicts being treated with methadone stayed in treatment for the the same amount of time.
Although the usage of street heroin declined significantly (from 27 days a month to only 5) one has to wonder if the addicts only stayed because they kept getting their fix. The main goal of the study is to simply get the addicts to stay in treatment, see a doctor regularly, and to reduce crime and use of street heroin. However, what would some of the addicts do if their doctors thought it was time to slowly take them off the drug? Would they leave, would the increase in crime and use of street heroin increase significantly, or would the addicts be committed to stopping their heavy usage of heroin. I think that should be the next step in the test.
The only thing about this study is it may not change anything in the United States due to strict drug policies.
Side note: Although crime decreased as well as use of street heroin, cocaine usage remained high.

What You Didn't Know About Tattoo's
Tattoos have been a common form of body art for thousands of years. The first tattoos were discovered on bodies over 1400 years old. These historic tats consisted of animals and mythical animals which were supposedly tattoos of status and rank among tribes. Today, tattoos are a universal form of individual identification, an artwork, or just a way to be heard. The reason for tattooing is different for everyone. Some like tattoos because they look cool, some want to keep a special name, quote, or phrase with them at all times, and some don’t even remember getting one in the first place. However, although tattooing methods seem safe and low-risk - after all, all of your friends have one! But tattooing has secret dangers that may be life threatening. A recent study by Dr. Bob Haley and Dr. Paul Fischer at the University Of Texas South-western Medical School discovered that the average commercial tattoo is the number one distributor of hepatitis C. Dr. Haley concluded that "Commercial acquired tattoos accounted for more than twice as many hepatitis C injections as injection-drug use. This means it may have been the largest single contributor to the nationwide epidemic of this form of hepatitis." Hepatitis C kills over 10,000 people a year, and more than 4 million Americans and counting are infected with hepatitis C. Unsterile equipment and needles can also transmit other serious diseases such as tuberculosis, hepatitis B, and HIV. According to WebMD Medical News 2002 "Hepatitis C is spread by infected blood and infected needles, which is the virus's connection with tattooing. Tattoos involve lots of needles making lots of sticks in the skin. Each stick carries potential for contamination - and not just with hepatitis, but also HIV." If you think that these diseases are only picked up in cheap tattoo parlours with improper sterilization techniques, you’re wrong. Famous celebrity Pamela Anderson picked up Hepatitis C from a tattoo parlour. It makes a lot of sense if you think about the kind of people who stereotypically get tattoos; drug addicts, rock stars, deviants, and criminals - and understand that it is their blood which infects the needles. It's entirely up to the tattoo parlour to make sure their instruments are sterilized properly - but do you really want to take that risk? A Quick Guide to Flea Control
When your pet has fleas, it's hard not to rush out and buy the best flea medications and chemicals to smother your pet with; however when it comes to treating fleas, a plan must be developed to make sure your pet is unharmed and happy. - Try to limit the number of chemical treatments that you use on your pet. The chemicals can cause irritation and damage to your pet's skin. It's okay to use one or two treatments, but using many at once can harm your pet. - Before using store-bought chemical treatments, minimize the amount of fleas that your pet has. Fleas cannot survive in water, so bathing your pet is a good place to start. Although it will not eliminate all of the fleas, it will reduce the number. - Fleas can also be brushed out with a fine tooth comb, but there is no saying whether or not they will jump right back on your pet. - A chemical treatment is necessary to get rid of the eggs laid by the adult fleas. Flea collars, powder baths, and other medicines are available to help free and prevent your pet from fleas and their eggs. - Fleas cause discomfort for you and your pet. If your pet is having a hard time dealing with flea bites, try using Advantage or Frontline Plus flea treatments. These treatments help provide relief from fleas quickly and efficiently, help kill the larvae living on your pet, and are safe medicines for animals. - Regular vacuuming is necessary when your pet has fleas. This will eliminate the fleas around the house that will affect you too. Remember to wash your sheets and blankets regularly as well. Breast Cancer Breakthrough
A huge breakthrough has been made in cancer research. Researches have discovered that a compound called salinomycin killed 100 times more cancer cells than the standard chemotherapy drug. The study was tested on mice by a team from Boston. Many other experts are hopeful that similar types of treatments could be used to combat other diseases as well.
The findings could essentially pave the wave for a treatment that can target the cancer stem cells without harming other body cells. The reason to target cancer stem cells is because it is widely believed that cancer stem cells are the reason why cancer is able to come back even after successful treatments to clear tumors.
Obviously this is a tremendous breakthrough for the entire world. Imagine the possibility that we could develop an anti-cancer drug that would target the cancer, destroy all the stem cells to prevent it from coming back and all this without harming any other body cells. Every year there are around 45,000 women and 300 men diagnosed with breast cancer in Britain alone. Imagine all the live we could save with this sort of information.
Although it will take a few years for researchers to make sure this is safe in humans the potential is definitely there. This could be that first step towards finding a cure for cancer, soon to be the number 1 cause for death.

Preventing Mosquito Bites
Well hopefully, wherever you are, you have been enjoying the summer months basking in the sun. Maybe you went on vacation for a few weeks, or just stayed at home with the family. However, no matter what you've done, you've probably noticed the numerous bug bites (mosquitoes especially) you have been receiving. If you don't want to be spraying your family with chemicals all the time, there are some other ways to fight off bites.
- Keep as much of your body covered as possible. This will help protect against bites, and even though the mosquitoes may find their way through the fabric, you should be receiving a significantly lower number of bites.
- Remember to wear light colored clothes, mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors.
- Try to keep your lawn mowed and all your bushes trimmed. This takes away some of the resting places for mosquitoes.
- Remove anything that can collect water in your yard. Also, make sure to drain and clean your gutters completely. If you have a bird bath change the water at least once every week. Mosquitoes love standing water.
- Plant mosquito repelling plants like, citronella, lavender, basil, catnip, pennyroyal, tansy, or marigolds. You could even break off and crush some of the plant leaves and rub them on your skin or combine the crushed leaves with water to use as a spray.
- I've heard of some people dabbing Vanilla Extract on themselves, but there are so many different recommended ways. Some say to dab the pulse points others say rub it all over or combine with water and rub. It is up to you to find out exactly what is best.
Good luck and best wishes for the rest of the summer, and hopefully you can keep those bugs and the bites at bay. "Dead By Mistake"
Medi cal errors have causing an alarming amount of preventable deaths in the United States.-
An estimate 200,000 Americans will die in 2009 due to preventable medical errors and hospital infections. So you have to ask yourself, do you feel safe? I am not so sure anymore. I the fact that yes, we are all human and we do make some mistakes. However, 200,000 preventable deaths in 2009 alone is unacceptable. I cannot comprehend how after 10+ years of post-secondary schooling that many people are killed due to a mistake. No longer should it be consider "Dead By Mistake," instead maybe is should be more appropriately name "Sorry I wasn't sure if I was supposed to cut the red or blue one," or what about "Maybe I should've been paying more attention," or how about "Oops!"
Someone needs to address this current statistic. There should not be this many accidental deaths in a modernized country such as ours. It is simply not good enough. Some new set of rules need to be put in place. Maybe an investigation team that determine how great a mistake was made. Maybe place cameras in the operating room so if someone does die by mistake the tape can be reviewed and higher powers can punish the doctor that was responsible appropriately.
Whatever is suggested, something does need to be done. I don't feel safe anymore, I don't have faith in doctors, who are supposed to be some of the most educated people in the country. Something needs to be done, something needs to be changed.

Are Men Good For Women's Diets?
Depending on the way you look at it, men could be good for women's diets. A study that was conducted at a University's cafeteria's showed that when women ate with a mixed group they tend to eat less calories. The more men that were present seemed to further decrease the calorie intake of the women.
The only problem with this I see is if women start to starve themselves by not eating enough. Most women think that if they eat less in front of guys then they will appear to be more attractive, but guess what, if you don't eat enough and change into a cross between Lindsay Lohan and a skeleton (oh wait, maybe they're the same thing), then guys probably won't find you very attractive anyway.
If eating with men helps you eat healthier then go ahead and eat with guys more often, more power to you. Remember eating healthier and eating less are two completely different things. As long as you continue to eat a sufficient amount of food and stay healthier then yes, men can be good for women's diets. However, I don't think every article that talks about this should be titled "Men ARE good for women's diets" and should be "Men CAN be good for women's diets."
Furthermore, I think one other things should be taken into consideration, do men even care? For the most part, probably not. I mean if you eat like a pig, with no courtesy eating a full rack of ribs in record breaking time, then yeah maybe men care. But if you tend to eat like a civilized human being, taking some sort of time to eat then it probably doesn't make a significant impact on men. During the study men's eating habits didn't seem to change in mixed or same-sex groups. Either they (men) don't really care that much, or all these guys seemed to get extra hungry. Maybe that should be the next study. "Do men really care about women's eating habits?" That or spend time doing something like finding a cure for cancer, or solving world hunger. You know just those small little things.

5 Easy Ways to Lower Blood Pressure
1. Exercise
Regular exercise has been known to lower blood pressure in some people. It's good for many other things including weight management, lowering cholesterol, and reducing stress. Make an exercise schedule for yourself and spend at least 30 minutes a day 5 times a week by running, walking, cycling, or doing Pilates. There are also special yoga classes which help lower blood pressure.
2. Monitor your Weight
Those who are overweight may have more problems with blood pressure than those who are of normal weight. If you are overweight, try to lose a few pounds in order to improve blood flow by exercising and eating better.
3. Limit your salt intake
Reducing your intake of salt and other forms of sodium may help control your blood pressure. On the other hand, eating foods with more potassium, magnesium, and calcium can also lower your blood pressure.
4. Limit your alcohol intake
High amounts of alcoholic beverages will increase your blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, it's a good idea to consider not drinking alcohol. If you choose to drink, monitor your intake.
If you are drinking, limit yourself to no more than 2 drinks a day, and 9 drinks a week.
5. Stress Less
High stress levels will increase your blood pressure. It's important to relax and give yourself time to wind down before bed in order to reduce your stress, thus reducing your blood pressure. Try relaxation and meditation techniques like deep breathing or taking a hot bubble bath.

Outdoor Concerts, Fun At A Price (And I Don't Mean The Price For Tickets)

If you are like me, then you are out this summer going to concerts. I love music, and I love watching a band perform live, especially those bands that are not only amazing musicians, but amazing performers. Anyway, this coming Friday August 7th, I'm going to an outdoor concert, and many of those outdoor concerts are a blast, but it comes at a price..
The last outdoor concert I went to, was amazing, but the rain just didn't stop. However, this time it appears to look as if it will be hot, and this brings new risks to my health and anyone else's health. Now, again as much as I love music, it can damage your hearing. Especially at a rock concert, where the music can actually cause permanent hearing damage. If you are worried about this, ear plug should be considered. You just need them to lesson the volume, not stop it altogether, what would be the point of the concert be then? If you don't know what the volume of the concert will be like then bring ear plugs just in case. If you do experience lasting symptoms, or anything you believe to be irregular then go see your doctor immediately to prevent permanent damage. Also, in the heat there are a vast amount of health hazards. Dehydration can become very serious. You are outside in the sun with thousands of people cramped into a small space (small in relation to the large number of people). Make sure to drink plenty of fluids. Also, wear sunscreen. You will be outside baking in the sun all day and that much exposure can leave a serious burn, and may eventually lead to cancer. Side-note: If you are worried about bodily harm I would advise staying out of the mosh pit, but that is up to you. Make sure you enjoy the concert, but you should be safe while doing so. So now I've covered some of the potential health risks. Now I can't wait to see Heaven and Hell with Coheed and Cambria.
