7 Ways to Solve Minor Insomnia

Approximately one in eight people suffer from minor insomnia. Nothing ruins a day like tossing a turning the night before. Here are a few ways to alleviate your stress and get a better night’s sleep.

1. Drink warm milk or tea 15 minutes before going to bed – Milk is full of calcium, which will sooth your nerves and help you to relax. If you cannot or prefer not to drink milk, warm herbal tea is a good compromise. It only has natural ingredients. You can find, in most health food stores, a special mix of tea to soothe your stress and help you sleep. If you do not have these resources, the best type of herb tea to alleviate your anxiety is chamomile, catnip, anise, or fennel tea.

2. Get a massage – Massages, even from an unprofessional, aid in lowering stress. Although a full body massage would be great, short backrub or a face and scalp massage can even be a big help. Make the strokes slow, but firm to work out tension in your body.

3. Breathe deeply – Regular breathing does nothing to relax you. When you breathe deeply, using your chest, diaphragm, lower back, and ribcage, it is much more effective in relieving stress and relaxing muscles. Try breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. Also try to make each exhale longer than each inhale.

4. Get physical exercise during the day – Insomnia is much more common for those who have jobs which don’t require physical activity. If you take simply 15 minutes for a brisk walk to an hour of an extraneous workout your body will get the activity and oxygen it needs to relax. Make sure to do this exercise long before retreating to bed so that your body has a chance to slow down.

5. Take a warm bath – To relax your body a medium length warm bath (not hot or your body is sapped of its vitality). It also helps to have baking soda and Epsom salts to ease you and release the toxins from your body

6. Put a hot water bottle on your stomach – A lot of tension is in your stomach so a helpful tip to release that tension for better sleep is to place a hot water bottle on your stomach in bed while trying to sleep. Breathing deeply also helps lighten your stress and lessen the chance for insomnia.

7. Don’t watch T.V. before bed – Both T.V, books, and other things such as homework, keep your mind stimulated. Avoid doing these for about an hour before bed, as overstimulation on your mind and stress both contribute to lack of sleep. Try to keep your mind relaxed and at ease for some time before attempting to sleep.

How Can You Tell If You Have A Migraine?

A headache is characterized as pain, felt first at the base of brain structure or in its surrounding tissue, which is often caused by muscle contractions or circulation problems. Migraines, in comparison to headaches, can prove to be much more serious, requiring a doctor’s assessment or even medication.

Migraines are characterized by several common symptoms:

Unusually long headaches – Migraines can last from 4 to 72 hours, much longer than the average headache.
Throbbing pain on one side of the head – Headache pain is often steady and felt throughout the whole head; migraines tend to have an intense pulsating nature, in one area.
Sensitivity to light or sound – Migraine sufferers tend to avoid stimulation. If your headaches are so severe that you’ve had to enclose yourself in a dark room, you may be experiencing more than a headache.
Nausea and vomitingMigraine headaches can also include nausea and vomiting, which isn’t pretty.
Headache worsening with movement – While regular headaches remain on the same ‘pain frequency’ no matter which way you move, migraines intensify with movement.
Pain interferes with daily activities – The pain experienced through migraines can be extremely severe, and get in the way of your everyday life.
Pain occurs after auras – Some migraines occur not long after what medical experts call auras, which can be visual disturbances, like seeing blind spots or double vision, or losing sense of touch or speech. These auras often last for short periods of time, and there is a short break between them and the onset of an excruciating migraine.

Any pain that you experience in your head is going to hurt, whether it’s a headache or a migraine. However, while headaches can be eased with over-the-counter medication, frequent migraines are a severe medical condition, which requires medical attention.

8 Ways to Prevent and Ease Heartburn

Despite it’s deceiving name, heartburn has nothing to do with your heart. In fact the stinging sensation occurs in the esophagus when acid leaves the stomach and comes into contact with the esophagus lining. Those who suffer from heartburn, or acid reflux, know how much of a pain it is and are probably constantly searching for a solution to heartburn problems. Here are 8 quick tips to help you prevent your acid reflux episodes

1. Eat to Prevent Heartburn – The first thing that will help you ease heartburn is making sure you have a healthy diet with less acid and more fiber. Fatty foods like to sit in the stomach creating acid, whereas vegetables, fruits, and grains are easily digested with less acid production. Acidic foods include coffee, chili peppers, orange juice, tomato juice, and tomato sauce can cause heartburn. Some drugs like tetracylin, aspirin, ibuprophen, and iron supplements may cause heartburn. Other foods like garlic, onions, and chocolate may seem to promote heartburn by weakening the muscles at the bottom of the esophagus. By eating more fruits, vegetables, and grains you can ease your acid reflux.

2. Chew more gum - Saliva is a natural heartburn remedy. It is a base that neutralizes acid and washes it back into the stomach. Pop a piece of gum after a heavy meal to prevent heartburn.

3. Eat slowly – Eating quickly encourages you to eat more, therefore pushing acid up into the esophagus. Keep your meal proportions moderate and avoid eating on the run – this triggers stress which in turn triggers acid production and sensitivity to the pain of acid reflux.

4. Drink Herbal tea – Herbs have been considered natural heartburn remedies for thousands of years. After eating, brew chamomile, angelica, anise, caraway, seeds, or coriander. Peppermint leaves are also soothing herbs that can be brewed into a tea.

5. Stress less – stress increases the pain of acid reflux. If you are usually prone to stress, try meditative activities like yoga, or take an hour or so each day to do something you really enjoy such as playing and instrument, reading, or pampering yourself with a bubble bath.

6. Stay Standing – When you are suffering from pain your instinct might be to lie down. Try not to lie down when you have heartburn because it will actually cause the stomach acid to overflow therefore increasing the pain. Stick it out standing up.

7. Don’t eat and sleep – Do not eat within 2 hours before going to bed. Lying down with a full stomach can cause heartburn and indigestion. This can increase pain and prevent you from having a good sleep. It is also suggested that eating before bed can contribute to weight gain.

8. Skip the tuxedo cake – Usually, chocolate has health benefits, but when it comes to heartburn, the fat and caffeine in chocolate can stimulate overproduction of stomach acid. Other foods that stimulate acid in the stomach are milk, beer, wine, and tomatoes. If you can, avoid chocolate.

Increased Risk of ADHD in Children with Smoke and Lead Exposure

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD for short affects about 5-8 percent of school age children. ADHD is a fairly common neurobiological condition that presents itself through inappropriate levels of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Although ADHD is not life threatening, it can become a very difficult obstacle to overcome.

However, recent data shows that smoking can raise the chances of ADHD by more than double. If the mother does not quit smoking during pregnancy, the chances of ADHD for the child will be increased 2.4 times. Furthermore, exposure to lead can also increase chances of child having ADHD. Most cases of lead exposure are due to contaminated paint, soil, and old water pipes.

The findings definitely showed that smoking raised the chances for ADHD by 2.4 times and lead exposure raised it 2.3 times. However, when a child was exposed to both smoking and lead, the chance of having ADHD was 8 times as high!

H1N1 in Pets?

When we think of H1N1, we see people with masks, people getting their flu shots, perhaps people sick at home with the flu. But what if you were a pet? It’s not as easy to wash your hands, get a shot, and stay away from people. Fleas and dry skin aren’t the only thing you need to worry about. A 13-year old Tabby cat was recently diagnosed with H1N1, the first confirmed case of a cat contracting this influenza. The cat in question is an indoor house cat who never has contact with other animals. It is believed that the cat picked up the virus from his owners who were both recently sick with H1N1.
Other animals who have been diagnosed with H1N1 include pigs, turkeys, and several pet ferrets. Unlike popular belief, it is said that the disease passes from human to animal, not animal to human. The symptoms of the Tabby’s flu were fatigue, loss of appetite, and trouble breathing. In behavior he had stopped cleaning himself, and rested in a crouching position. After being given fluids and antibiotics, the cat has recovered from the flu.

It’s known that pets can contract some forms of flu. Cats can contract the Avian flu, horses and dogs can get the Canine influenza (there’s even a flu shot for dogs) But this is the first time we’ve seen a house cat contract H1N1. Officials say that you should take the same precautions for your cat as you would. If you feel like you are sick try not to touch your pets too much in order to prevent spreading the virus and make sure you and your pet have a healthy immune system.

Common Sports Related Injuries and How To Prevent Them

1.Sprains – Sprains, which are injuries to the ligaments occur when the ligament is suddenly stretched past its limit, causing it to deform or even tear. To prevent strains make sure you warm up and stretch joints (don’t stretch too far) to increase strength and range of motion.

2.Strains – Strains are injuries to muscle fibers or tendons. Tendons work by holding the muscles to the bones. Strains can be caused by over-stretching or overusing a muscle, causing tears in the muscle fibers. When participating in any physical activity, make sure you warm up properly then stretch. Avoid any bouncing movements while stretching as this may cause strains or muscle pulls.

3.Stress fractures – Stress fractures can be avoided by completing a proper warm up which includes stretching, and a proper cooldown. Make sure to warmup and cooldown all parts of the body. Remember that rest is very important and try not to put too much stress on one body part.

4.Cramps - Cramps aren’t necessarily an injury, but they are very common, and definitely cause problems with athletic performance. A cramp is often brought on during moments of physical exertion. They can be very painful, and can form in many parts of the body. Cramps can cause an athlete to have difficulty breathing, walking, or a variety of other things that limit performance. To prevent a cramp try to drink plenty of fluids, as cramps can be cause by dehydration. Also, make sure you have warmed up and stretched before exerting your body. To relieve a muscle cramp try to drink more water, rest, apply an ice pack to the muscle, and follow this up with light stretching. Avoid massaging the muscle.

5 Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate

You’ve probably already heard of chocolate improving the mood, but there are more health benefits to chocolate that you may be unaware of. Before you go raiding the candy jar, keep in mind that these health benefits pertain to DARK CHOCOLATE only. That is anything with a cocoa content over 65%. Milk chocolate is probably what you are used to, but if you are interested in eating healthy it might be a good idea to give dark chocolate a try.

1. Good for the Heart - Due to the presence of antioxidants in dark chocolate, studies have found that in individuals with high blood pressure, a stick of dark chocolate a day can lower blood pressure levels. In addition, dark chocolate has been known to lower cholesterol levels by up to 10%.

2. Improves Mood – Dark chocolate stimulates endorphin production which in turn provides the brain with feelings of pleasure. A substance called theobromine which provides you with caffeine-like stimulation is also present in dark chocolate. Dark chocolate contains serotonin which is known to act as an anti-depressant.

3. Low fat - Unlike milk chocolate or white chocolate, dark chocolate contains very little fat that will affect your cholesterol. Of the small amount of fat in dark chocolate, 1/3 of the fats are actually good fats which are healthy for the body. The remaining 2/3rds are made up of a neutral fat, and a saturated fat.

4. Stress Reducer – A study found that eating an ounce of dark chocolate a day for two weeks drastically reduced stress levels in the bodies of people who were feeling highly stressed.

5. Stabilizer – Not only does dark chocolate regulate and stabilize the mood, but it’s also been found to help regulate the body’s metabolism

5 ways to Break the Fast Food Habit

Many of us eat fast food regularly due to it’s availability and convenience. Even though you know it’s not the best thing to be putting in your body, the addicting tastes and affordable prices are enough to keep you coming back for more. However, Eating large amounts of fast food will eventually cause your body harm. Fast food does not contain the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs to get out of a meal. Problems with cholesterol and obesity could occur in those who eat fast food regularly. Here are some tips to help you break your fast food habit.
1. Plan ahead - For the most part, we tend to opt for fast food when we are in a hurry and need a quick meal. If you plan ahead you not have to stop at McDonalds on the way home from work for dinner. Always have an idea about what you are going to have for breakfast, lunch, and dinner before you start the day.

2. Pack Snacks – If you carry healthy snacks with you when you go out, they will hold you off until it is time to have a meal. Pack things like trail mix, carrots and dip, or crackers and cheese. This way you will not be tempted to grab a small bite of greasy food.

3. Try once a month cooking - There are recipes online and in books that teach you how to cook enough meals to freeze so that they can be re-heated if you need a quick dinner solution.

4. Healthy Restaurants - find out if there are any healthy restaurants or cafes in your area and try eating there instead of fast food joints when you need a quick meal.

5. Reward yourself - If you are successful in cutting back on fast food, its okay to reward yourself every now and then. Having fast food a few times a month will satisfy your fast food cravings, but won’t bring you back into the habit!

Top States For Insufficient Sleep

In the day and age, many people are finding it very difficult to really get the proper amount of sleep. The reason can vary, in some it is wanting to progress in their work, spending countless extra hours at the office, even working when they get home. Other people may not have an excuse and just stay up late watching television or playing video games. The list of these reasons goes on and on.

However, what most people don’t know is the damaging effects that can occur without the proper amount of sleep. Without sufficient sleep we can start to develop physical and mental problems. Among the most common results of insufficient sleep is lack of energy and concentration. However, if you go too long without the proper amount of sleep serious problems, such as insomnia, chronic fatigue, hallucinations, and even death may result.

For those that have a hard time getting enough sleep there are some states you may want to stay away from. A recent study shows the top states that suffer from insufficient sleep. What I was stunned about was the fact that California was very low on the list with only 8% of the population reporting insufficient sleep.

These are the top states for insufficient sleep.

Do you have Vitamin D Deficiency?

All vitamins are essential in order to maintain our bodies balance. Vitamin D in particular is important because it helps maintain bone density which allows healthy bone growth. Calcium is useless without vitamin D. Vitamin D allows calcium to be absorbed into the body. Studies have found that a lack of vitamin D in the body can lead to osteoporosis. Moreover if you have a high vitamin D intake, you can lower your risk of developing breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer.
Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms

If you are vitamin D deficient you may experience some of the following symptoms:

Muscle pain and weakness, Muscle cramps, joint pain, fatigue, chronic pain, weight gain, high blood pressure, sleeplessness, trouble concentrating, headaches, bladder problems, constipation or diarrhea.

Not everyone who is vitamin D deficient suffers from the same symptoms. Sometimes their deficiency can even go unnoticed.

How to incorporate more Vitamin D in your life

1. Spend time outdoors – the sun is the best source for vitamin D.

2. Eat more fatty fish (salmon and herring), shrimp and oysters, shitake mushrooms, beef, and liver. These foods are rich in vitamin D

3. Use supplements. Take vitamin D supplements or multivitamins to ensure that you are getting all of the vitamins and minerals your body needs.

If you think you may have a vitamin D deficiency, visit your doctor and ask for a 25-hydroxyl-Vitamin D test. This is the only test that will test for a vitamin D deficiency.
