Despite what the countless infomercials and magazine ads say, you do not need hundreds of dollars worth of bizarre work out equipment or a cupboard full of worthless weight loss medicine to lose weight effectively. There are many natural medicines that will assist you in weight loss that will not harm your body with toxins and chemicals and make you feel healthy!
1. Drink more water
2. Put your body to work
The number one weight loss remedy proven to be the most effective for hundreds of years is the most simple; get some exercise! What does Spinach do for you?
Spinach contains vitamins A, C, E, K, B1, B6 and minerals like potassium, calcium, zinc, and so much more
Nutritional Benefits of Spinach
Vitamin A helps with things like vision, gene transcription, immune function, embryonic development and reproduction, bone metabolism, hematopoiesis, skin health, reducing the risk of heart disease, antioxidant activity.
Vitamin C helps in the development of healthy gums and in protecting against infections. Additionally, it strengthens many parts of your body such as blood vessels and muscles.
Vitamin E helps with the formation of muscle tissues and red blood cells. It also helps reduce the stress from exercise and reduces muscle damage.
Vitamin K is important for blood clotting.
Vitamin B1, or thiamin, helps fuel your body by converting blood sugar into energy. This keeps your mucous membranes healthy and is essential for nervous system, cardiovascular and muscular function.
Potassium is a mineral that helps the kidneys function normally. It is also crucial to heart function and plays a key role in skeletal and smooth muscle contraction, making it important for normal digestive and muscular function, too.
The body stores more than 99 percent of its calcium in the bones and teeth to help make and keep them strong. Your body needs calcium to help muscles and blood vessels contract and expand, secrete hormones and enzymes, and send messages through the nervous system.
Spinach Helps Prevent Cancer
Research shows that spinach contains over a dozen phytonutrients. These phytonutrients have certain properties that can help fight cancer. Some researchers have used spinach extracts to reduce the occurrence of skin cancer in animals, and lessened cell division in stomach cancer cells. The risk of breast cancer and prostate cancer may also be reduced with the consumption of spinach.
Spinach Promotes Better Cardiovascular Health
A substance called homocysteine is believed to be an important marker of heart disease and high levels are associated with an increased risk of Stroke. However, folate, a component of spinach, helps neutralize the harmful homocysteine.
Spinach Helps with Arthritis
If you suffer from arthritis spinach may be able to help you. Spinach contains anti-inflammatory nutrients to help the pain of arthritis.
Spinach Helps Prevent Eye Diseases
Spinach may be able to help prevent macular degeneration and even cataracts. Spinach contains lutein which, in many government studies, is shown to protect against both macular degeneration and cataracts, which cause blurriness and even blindness, mostly in the elderly.
There are too many good things about spinach to not add it to your diet. Go ahead and start eating that green vegetable whenever you can. The rewards will be invaluable.

Welcome to the summer of the Swine Flu Pandemic. Just as schools close for the Summer Vacation, the World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared Swine Influenza as a pandemic, the highest level possible.
When the Swine flu first began to spread in Mexico many were wondering, how long it would take until the swine flu became a pandemic, not if the swine flu would become a pandemic. As the Swine Flu spread globally many people became infected, yet the severity of the flu was very mild. Though the death toll has not been great, the speed at which the virus spread was incredible. This led to much deliberation by the WHO, and the eventual declaration of a pandemic.
Many seem to think this is too drastic of a step, but let us not forget, “better safe than sorry.” Even though the virus is not a relatively deadly threat at the moment, WHO Director-General, Dr. Margaret Chan says, “it is prudent to anticipate a bleaker outcome.”Think about it this way, if the virus does mutate, which almost all the major pandemics have done (Spanish Influenza, approximately 50 million dead), then at least we will be better prepared to deal with the illness. Additionally if we begin producing vaccinations we may be able to prevent the virus from infecting millions by the time it does become a significant problem.
While many members of the general public seem to find such a relatively harmless virus reaching pandemic levels, many experts think it has not happened soon enough. Dr. Thomas Frieden, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says, “This is not a surprise, for all intents and purposes, the United States government has been in phase 6 of the pandemic for some time now.”
Now I would love to see the Swine Flu pass by so we can later say, “Man remember that Pandemic back in ’09, what a joke,” but only time will reveal the answers to the future of the Swine Influenza Pandemic.

When they say the iPhone has an application for pretty much everything, they really mean pretty much everything. A new iPhone app was just recently released for doctors. The app allows a doctor to stream a patient’s electrocardiogram readings over 3G. Additionally, the program allows the doctor to zoom in and replay events.
An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is the recording of the electrical activity of the heart over time via skin electrodes. The ECG allows doctors to measure the rate and regularity of heartbeats as well as the size and position of the chambers, the presence of any damage to the heart, and the effects of drugs or devices used to regulate the heart. Additionally, the procedure is noninvasive, and only requires electrodes to be attached to the body. An ECG is painless. When first applied, the disks may be cold and in rare circumstances, you may develop a localized rash or irritation where the patches are placed.
This app could mean huge things for a doctor/patient relationship. It allows the doctor to constantly monitor his or her patient, even from the comfort of home. Furthermore, not only does this add even greater supervision to the patient’s health, but the patient would have that extra piece of mind, knowing their doctor always has an eye on them.
Whether or not this app will be a success or a flop will have to wait. However, the value of this app cannot be overlooked. It is an invaluable tool for doctors and is, yet another advancement in medicine all thanks to technology. However, if this app did not sell, it would be an unfortunate opportunity missed by the world of medicine. I do hope that this product is recognized by the medical world and all the advantages of having such an application can be fully used.

Aging isn’t always as beautiful or graceful as many would wish. In fact there are many difficulties seniors have to deal with and many challenges they must face. Many of these difficulties have severe effects on the brain. Unfortunately many of these cannot be “cured” and drastically change the person it appears in and that persons’ family. Some of these illnesses include Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.
Alzheimer’s disease affects the way a person thinks, behaves, and even their emotions and physical functions. Alzheimer’s changes a person’s ability to understand, think, remember and communicate will be affected. Simple tasks that have been performed for years will become more difficult or be forgotten. Confusion and memory loss occur, initially for recent events and eventually for long-term events, will occur. The ability to find the right words and follow a conversation will be affected. A person may appear uninterested and apathetic, and may quickly lose interest in the hobbies they previously enjoyed. Repeating the same action or words, hiding possessions, physical outbursts, and restlessness are also caused by Alzheimer’s.
Parkinson’s disease is a disorder caused by the gradual loss of cells in a small part of the brain. The loss of these cells results in a reduction of a vital chemical called “dopamine,” which causes symptoms such as, shaking of the hands, slowing down of movement, stiffness, and loss of balance. Other symptoms are loss of facial expression, reduction in speech volume and clarity, difficulty swallowing, change in size of handwriting, dry skin, constipation, urinary difficulties, and depression. Because Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder, these symptoms worsen with time.
To help prevent fading memory, try these 20 ways to boost memory
“1. Take the stairs 2. Change your wallpaper 3. Steal some zzz’s by daylight 4. Take a mental “photograph” 5. Eat less 6. Try a “brain-training” game — or join a “brain gym” 7. Spend some time online 8. Stop and sip a cuppa 9. See a doctor if you feel depressed 10. Take the “multi” out of your tasking 11. Keep your blood sugar under control 12. Waggle your eyes back and forth 13. Eat your green vegetables 14. Don’t ignore sleep apnea 15. Learn something new that’s a real departure for you 16. Quit smoking 17. Eat some chocolate! 18. Put everything in its place 19. Don’t retire 20. Throw a party”– “20 Easy Ways to Boost Your Memory” from Silverinnings –Blog for Senior Citizens

From Scrubs to Silver Screen: Ken Jeong’s Journey
The title does seem a little absurd, but recently I have been required to ask, “If they could, would doctors wish they were actors?”
The Multifaceted Dr. Jeong:
Ken Jeong, a doctor turned actor is the inspiration for this article for me, because although the man is incredibly funny, he is also incredibly smart. After graduation from Duke University, Ken obtained his medical doctorate at the University of North Carolina. He completed his Internal Medicine residency in New Orleans, where he developed a following based on his skills in comedy.

Medical Expertise and Residency
Ken won the “Big Easy Laff-Off” while he was in New Orleans, which would steer him down a very successful path into acting. Late NBC president Brandon Tartikoff, and Improv founder Budd Friedman, just so happened to be judging the competition. Impressed with Ken they suggested that the doctor-turned-funny man should move to Los Angeles.
Comedy Calling: Stand-Up Success and Recognition
While in L.A., Ken began to regularly perform at the Improv and Laugh Factory. Shortly after he appeared on “The View” and was given the title “The Funniest Doctor in America.” And this intelligent, funny man would certainly take full advantage of the opportunity and live up to his title.
Ken rode his wave of good fortune and began appearing on many hit television programs that included, NBC’s The Office, HBO’s Entourage & Curb Your Enthusiasm, CBS’ Two and a Half Men, ABC’s Boston Legal & FX’s The Shield. Additionally, he made his debut in movies with his appearance in “Knocked Up,” playing a doctor! So the doctor had tried his luck in acting, succeeding only to play a doctor. Now that’s a comedy.
Ken has gone on to appear in many more films that include, “Step Brothers,” “Pineapple Express,” “Role Models,” and “The Hangover,” and is also currently working on many more upcoming films.
I’m sure many doctors would love to turn to act. They wouldn’t have to deal with all the stress that life could be on their hands, but with that said I’m positive that many doctors love what they do. They save lives, and help people, and there’s always something new to do. So thank all those doctors out there helping people, and thanks to funnymen like Ken Jeong, who provide us with the “best medicine,” laughter.
