It’s a fact – one in five adults has high cholesterol. As your cholesterol builds up, you increase the risk of heart disease or even a heart attack. Despite the common stereotypes, high cholesterol is not just something older, overweight people need to be concerned about. High cholesterol affects people who are physically fit and eat right. High cholesterol can be inherited from members of your family. To help lower your cholesterol:
- Follow a cholesterol-lowering diet
- Start exercising
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Quit smoking
Unfortunately, you may not be able to lower your cholesterol simply by diet and exercise. In such cases, physicians prescribe cholesterol-lowering medication like Lipitor. Lipitor is an HMG CoA reductase inhibitor that blocks the production of cholesterol to lower LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Using Lipitor can:
- Lower your cholesterol by 29% to 45% (average effect depending on dose)
- Lower your “bad” cholesterol by 39% to 60% (average effect depending on the dose
- Reduce your risk of having a heart attack by 36%
Why Lipitor?
Lipitor is the most recommended cholesterol medication by Canadian pharmacies. Lipitor has been prescribed to more than 18 million people. It’s been proven to bring cholesterol levels down and is backed by over 400 clinical trials.
Lipitor is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are gas, stomach pain, mild indigestion, and constipation. If you experience any muscle pain or weakness, contact your physician.
Taking Lipitor shouldn’t affect your daily schedule. Lipitor is only taken once per day and can be taken with or without food. It is recommended that you take your pill at the same time each day.

As the cost of pharmaceuticals continues to rise, taking advantage of the way drugs are manufactured and priced can save you considerable amounts of money. Most of the cost of pharmaceuticals is wrapped up in research and marketing, not manufacturing. Many drugs are priced the same regardless of the dose because drug manufacturers don’t want cost to be a determining factor when doctors are deciding how much of a drug to prescribe. Therefore, a patient can order the larger pill that contains double the dose, cut the pill in half, and save up to 50%.
For instance, DoctorSolve™ sells a one-month supply of 20 mg Lipitor for $70.78. DoctorSolve™ also sells a one-month supply of 40 mg Lipitor for $77.09. So if you require a prescription of 20 mg Lipitor prescription you could buy a month’s supply of the 40 mg pills, and cut them in half, essentially getting an extra month’s supply of Lipitor for only $6.31.
You might wonder if cutting pills is safe or be afraid that insurers may make pill cutting mandatory. Despite the health concerns raised by drug manufacturers, recent studies show that pill cutting, when done correctly, is perfectly safe for many drugs.
Correct pill cutting does not involve kitchen knives and a cutting board. Most pharmaceutical companies manufacture pill cutters designed to make pill cutting easier. Simply open the cutter and set the pill inside. Then close the cutter and a blade cuts through the pill. It is important to check the condition and orientation of the pill-cutting blade. If your blade is loose or not level, your pills will not be cut evenly. Pill cutters normally range from $3-$15.
It is important to note that not all pills can be split. Some must remain intact to be absorbed properly. Additionally, the shape and size of some pills make it difficult to cut precisely, which could lead to over or under-dosing. Time-release drugs should not be split, as they become ineffective or fail to deliver the right dosage. Pills with a coating (i.e., Entrophen, enteric-coated aspirin) should not be halved. Breaking coated pills exposes them to the acid in the stomach that can destroy the medication.
Please consult your doctor before splitting any pills.
In certain cases, cutting a pill may result in fragmentation. When you see a fragmented pill, you may think you are getting uneven doses. The active ingredient in most pills only makes up a small portion of the pill. The majority of the pill’s composition is filler agents. Therefore, the amount of medication lost through fragmentation is miniscule and won’t affect your dosage.
As a general guideline, the following drugs can be split:
- Cholesterol drugs (i.e., Lipitor)
- Blood pressure drugs (ACE inhibitors and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers)
- Antidepressants (i.e., Zoloft)
- Valtrex (anti-viral drug)
Splitting pills is not a new trend. Medical experts say people have been doing it for years, trying to render high-cost medication affordable. Done properly, pill cutting provides a safe alternative to help offset escalating pharmaceutical costs.

Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs play a vital role in any healthcare system. OTC drug products are those drugs that are available to consumers without a prescription. The most common OTC drugs are pain relievers, cold and cough medications, laxatives, antihistamines, and antacids.
Currently, it is the peak of cold and flu season. To help you make some educated choices about OTC medications to help ease your pain and relieve symptoms, we compiled a list that explains what OTC medications to use for common symptoms of colds and flu. Keep in mind that one medication may contain several different ingredients, and another medication may only contain one ingredient but may relieve symptoms of several different health conditions. It is important to read the product labels so that you only take what you need.
Drug stores and supermarkets carry so many products that you may be overwhelmed by the selections for your current problem. What is the main ingredient you should be searching for? Is the generic as effective as the name brand?
At DoctorSolve™ Healthcare Inc., our staff is trained to help you answer these types of questions. Simply call us toll free at: 866.732.0305.
Pain Relievers
People use pain relievers (analgesics) to relieve headaches, tooth pain, menstrual cramps, and aches from colds or flu. The most common types of analgesics are acetaminophen (Tylenol), ASA (Aspirin), and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen – Advil).
For increased pain relief, you can combine ASA or acetaminophen with mild opioid painkillers (like codeine). Although stronger pain relievers are still non-prescription, they are usually kept behind the counter and are only available after you consult a pharmacist.
Cough and Cold Medications
Cold and cough medications relieve the common symptoms of colds and flu, like coughing, aches, and stuffy nose. Although cold and cold medications are available without a prescription, some contain ingredients that can be harmful when taken in large doses. Some people may suffer from stomach upset, dizziness, and in rare cases, heart palpitations, headache, and breathlessness.
Congestion
Pseudoephedrine and phenylpropanolamine are ingredients used in oral decongestants. Phenylephrine and oxymetazoline are found in nasal decongestants.
Nasal decongestants typically work faster than oral decongestants but can have a rebound effect that makes your nose even more congested if you use them for more than 3-5 days. Nasal decongestants are recommended for short-lived colds.
Cough
How can you tell if your cough is getting better? When your cough is getting better, you will produce mucus. Clearing the mucus from your lungs is a sign you are getting better. If mucus stays in the lungs, you can develop pneumonia.
If you have a productive cough, use an expectorant and drink plenty of water. Both help to remove the mucus from the lungs. Contact your doctor if any of the mucus is green or yellow or contains blood.
You need to stop a nonproductive cough because dry coughing can cause throat irritation. To stop a nonproductive cough you should use an antitussive like Dextromethorphan. As a general guideline, any cough medicines with the initials DM contain dextromethorphan.
It is important to note if your medication is suggested for day or nighttime use. Night-time cough medications can often cause drowsiness.
Runny nose
Usually, runny noses are caused by either allergies or a cold. Antihistamines work well for allergies but serve no function for a common cold. Cold symptoms are caused by a virus, not by the release of histamines. Antihistamines prevent histamines from being released into the body.

Just like humans, dogs suffer from joint pain caused by osteoarthritis. Constant pain is no way to live, so when your dog feels pain caused by canine arthritis, you want to do everything you can to help alleviate the pain. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that affects your dog’s joints and is the most common cause of chronic pain in dogs. Surprisingly, twenty percent of dogs suffer from this disease. So you might wonder what this means. Quite simply, osteoarthritis makes it painful for your dog to jump, climb stairs, or even get in and out of the car.
Deramaxx is a prescription pet med used to control chronic osteoarthritis pain or the pain and inflammation associated with orthopedic surgery. Deramaxx is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) belonging to the COX-2 inhibitor class, similar to the human medications Celebrex and Bextra. The active ingredient in Deramaxx is deracoxib.
Deramaxx is proven safe enough to use every day, which is important because your dog feels pain every day. As with all drugs used to treat osteoarthritis, side effects involving the digestive system, kidneys or liver may occur. Normally, these side effects are mild, but in extreme cases, may be serious.
If your dog develops any side effects, you should stop using Deramaxx and consult your veterinarian. If your dog is currently using other NSAIDs or corticosteroids, you should avoid using Deramaxx. If you have any questions, please contact DoctorSolve™ through our toll-free number: (866) 732.0305.
Deramaxx is most effective when taken with food, but studies prove the tablets are still effective when delivered on an empty stomach. To prevent postoperative orthopedic pain, you should administer Deramaxx prior to the procedure.
