What is Plavix used for?

This medicine is used to reduce the risk of events worsened by blood clots, such as stroke or heart disease.

When should Plavix not be taken?

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine you have an active bleeding disorder, such as peptic ulcer or bleeding in the brain

What precautions should I follow when taking Plavix?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have increased risk of bleeding due to surgery or trauma if you will be having surgery if you have impaired liver or kidney function if you have any other medical condition

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Plavix?

Use this medicine with extreme caution if you suffer from peptic ulceration, bleeding from stomach, eye problem, bleeding problems due to liver disease.

What are the side effects of Plavix?

Most severe:  Chest pain; difficulty breathing; increased bleeding; bleeding in the eye; ulcers.

Most common:  Flu-like symptoms; pain; tiredness; swelling; headache; dizziness; abdominal pain; diarrhea; nausea; indigestion; constipation; joint pain; back pain; bruising; nosebleed; depression; runny nose; bronchitis; coughing; urinary tract infection; upper respiratory tract infection; itching; rash.

Other:  Bleeding from the rectum; "coffee ground vomit"; hemorrhoids; general body discomfort; weakness; fainting; confusion; coughing; chills; loss of appetite; drowsiness; joint disease; muscle pain; upper respiratory tract infection; red or purple spots under the skin; nausea; vomiting; joint pain; arthritis; nosebleed; tiredness; back pain.

How should I take Plavix?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with this medicine and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. This food may be taken with or without food. This medicine may need to be stopped if you are going to have surgery. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor or dentist. It may take longer to stop bleeding while taking this medicine. Report any unusual bleeding or dark-colored stools to your doctor. This medicine may cause dizziness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medication. Do not stop taking this medication without checking with your doctor. Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken too much of this medicine. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

How should Plavix be stored?

Store at 77 degrees F. Protect from moisture, heat and light. Keep out of the reach of children.
