What is Flagyl used for?
This medicine is used to treat vaginal infection caused by certain bacteria.
When should Flagyl not be taken?
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine or to similar medications you are in the first 3 months of pregnancy This medicine should not be administered to patients with active neurological disorders or a history of blood dyscrasia, hypothyroidism and hypoadrenalism.
What precautions should I follow when taking Flagyl?
Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have any other medical condition like kidney disease, liver disease, blood disorders, neurological disorders or pancreatic disease
What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Flagyl?
This medicine has been shown to cause cancer in animal studies. Do not use this medicine if it is not necessary. Use this medicine only for its intended use. How metronidazole kills susceptible bacteria is not fully known. It is thought that it stops the production of essential proteins needed by the bacteria to survive.
What are the side effects of Flagyl?
Most severe: Seizures; nerve problems (numbness/abnormal sensations).
Most common: Headache; vaginal inflammation; nausea; metallic taste in mouth; bacterial infection; flu-like symptoms; genital itching; sinus infection; upper respiratory tract infection; diarrhea; dizziness; stomach pain; sore throat; abnormal menstruation; mouth infection; abnormal urine; urinary tract infection; dry mouth.
Other: Transient eosinophilia or neutropenia, convulsive seizures, peripheral neuropathy, vertigo, incoordination, ataxia, confusion, insomnia, flushing, headache, dryness of the vagina, dysuria, darkened urine, modification of taste of alcoholic beverages, rash, pruritus, palpitation and chest pain.
How should I take Flagyl?
How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the information provided with this medicine and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Take this medicine 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Take this medicine for 7 consecutive days. Do not use this medicine during the first 3 months of pregnancy. Contact your doctor at once if seizures or numbness in hands or feet occur. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your doctor. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparation or dietary supplement. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken too much of this medicine. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
How should Flagyl be stored?
Store at 77 degrees F.
