What is Femara used for?

This medicine is used to treat advanced or metastatic breast cancer in women past menopause. It is also used to treat advanced breast cancer in women past menopause whose cancer progresses after treatment with other medications.

When should Femara not be taken?

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine or to similar medications you are not past menopause you are pregnant or breastfeeding

What precautions should I follow when taking Femara?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are planning to become pregnant if you are taking any prescription medicine (especially cancer medications), nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have kidney or liver problems if you are taking hormone replacement therapy if you are still having menstrual periods if you have any other medical condition

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Femara?

This medicine can cause fatigue, dizziness and impair your ability to drive or operate machinery.

What are the side effects of Femara?

Most severe:  Difficulty breathing; chest pain.

Most common:  Muscle, leg, bone, back, and arm pain; nausea; headache; tiredness; joint pain; vomiting; constipation; diarrhea; stomach pain; flu symptoms; breast pain; cough; hot flashes; rash; swelling of hands and feet; loss of appetite; drowsiness; dizziness; shortness of breath; sleeplessness; indigestion; weight change; pain; weakness; hair loss/thinning.

Other:  Increased sweating; vaginal bleeding; vaginal discharge; increased appetite.

How should I take Femara?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the patient leaflet provided with this medicine and reread it each time you get this prescription refilled. Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your health care provider. Take this medicine with a small glass of water at about the same time each day. This medicine may be taken with or without meals. This medicine may cause drowsiness and dizziness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks that require alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Contact your health care provider at once if you feel you have taken too much of this medicine. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and advise your doctor or pharmacist at your next appointment.

How should Femara be stored?

Store at controlled room temperature (between 59 and 86 degrees F) in a dry place. Avoid storing in places where temperature may rise above 86 degrees F. Do not use after the expiration date on the package. Return any unused medicine to your pharmacist.
