What is Pepcid used for?

This medicine is used to reduce acid in the stomach. It is used to treat stomach and upper small intestine, conditions that cause increased acid secretion(eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD, or the bubbling of stomach contents into the food pipe, which causes heartburn). Doctors may on occasion prescribe it for other reasons.

When should Pepcid not be taken?

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine

What precautions should I follow when taking Pepcid?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical conditions, such as kidney disease

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Pepcid?

Do not use this medicine continously for more than 2 weeks without consulting your health care provider. Before using this medicine consult your health care provider if you have severe kidney disease, previous history of ulcer disease, chronic illness, if you are experiencing unintended weight loss in association with dyspeptic symptoms, if you are middle-aged or older with new or recently changed dyspeptic symptoms.

What are the side effects of Pepcid?

Most severe:  Allergic reactions; seizures.

Most common:  Headache; dizziness; constipation; diarrhea.

Other: Breast enlargement (in men), impotence, confusion, hallucinations

How should I take Pepcid?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Never self-diagnose or self-treat ulcers with this or other medicine. You may need to make changes in your diet and lifestyle to help in the treat and prevent ulcers and other digestive problems. This may include stress-reduction programs, exercise, and diet changes. Notify your doctor if you have any symptoms of a bleeding ulcer, such as black, tarry stools or "coffee-ground" vomit. This medicine may cause dizziness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Lab tests may be required. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your doctor. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medicines without talking with your doctor. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

How should Pepcid be stored?

Do not store above 104 degrees F. Keep out of the reach of children, protect from direct heat, light and moisture
