What is Celexa used for?

This medicine is used to treat depression.

When should Celexa not be taken?

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine you are currently taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor within the last 14 days

What precautions should I follow when taking Celexa?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you have a history of severe mood swings if you have a history of seizures if you have impaired liver function if you have severe kidney impairment if you have a history of substance or alcohol abuse if you have any other medical condition

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Celexa?

Combining this medicine with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors could lead to a serious even fatal reaction.

What are the side effects of Celexa?

Most severe:  Seizures; severe allergic reactions (giant hives; swelling of the face, lips, or tongue; difficulty breathing.

Most common:  Nausea; dry mouth; increasing sweating; tremor; diarrhea; tiredness; fever; drowsiness; appetite loss; agitation; decreased sex drive; yawning; runny nose; sinus infection; ejaculation disorder; impotence.

Other:  Weakness; prolonged painful erection; increased heart rate; dizziness; headache; weight changes; gas; frequent urination; rash; itchiness; changes in taste; upper respiratory tract infection; painful menstruation; anxiety; indigestion; vomiting; stomach pain; joint pain; muscle aches.

How should I take Celexa?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Take this medicine in the morning or evening, with or without food as directed by your health care provider. Contact your health care provider if you experience any of the following: Suicidal thoughts; sexual problems; appetite loss; nausea; vomiting; weight gain; restlessness; irritability; confusion; excessive urination. This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine. Stop taking MAO inhibitors at least 14 days before taking this medicine. If you are uncertain whether your other medications contain an MAO inhibitor, check with your health care provider. Improvement in depression may be noticeable in 1 to 4 weeks. Continue to take your medicine as directed even when depression improves. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and contact your health care provider or pharmacist.

How should Celexa be stored?

Store between 59 and 86 degrees F.
